Of course, I know about the widespread and often warranted public doubt and skepticism that surrounds anything natural and purported to be a "cure," especially a dietary supplement masquerading as a medical drug. The 1994 federal dietary supplement and Health Education Act specifically prohibits manufacturers and distributors of dietary supplements from making claims that the supplements cure disease. First parties who profit from the product's sales must adhere to strictly narrow structure-and-function claims allowed within the DSHEA framework. |

In 1994, the dietary supplement Health and Education Act (DSHEA) was passed in the United States. This legislation places herbal products in a clearly defined regulatory category of dietary supplements, along with a number of other products including vitamins, minerals, and amino acids. When the DSHEA was passed, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) estimated that there were about four thousand dietary supplements on the market. After this law was passed, the number has increased dramatically to more than thirty thousand, with more than one thousand being added each year. |

Post-1994 with DSHEA there are very specific guidelines as a dietary supplement company that we operate within. So when DSHEA came into being, there were still people who said, "Dietary supplements just aren't regulated." Well, that's completely false. They are regulated. They fall within the guidelines of the FDA. There's page after page after page of recommendations. What is a dietary supplement, what isn't a dietary supplement, what you can say about it, what you can't say about it and how you promote it to the marketplace. |

One study found vitamin C and vitamin E intake from dietary supplements, but not from food sources, to be associated with reduced risk of ovarian cancer [291]; however, there was no indication of a dose-response effect in that study, and the lifestyle and behavioral characteristics of dietary supplement users are known to differ from those of nonusers. Results of analysis of relationships between ovarian cancer risk and intakes of other micronutrients and dietary constituents, such as vitamin A and alcohol, are similarly inconsistent. |

That law authorizes a new program so that reports of serious adverse events related to the use of a dietary supplement or over-the-counter drug would be reported to the Food and Drug Administration, FDA, on a priority basis.
As I said, the Durbin amendment contemplates a new adulterated food registry. Under the provisions establishing that registry, reports of adulterated foods would be made by many, if not all, of the same parties who are required to file reports of serious adverse events associated with the use of dietary supplements under Public Law 109-462. |

Multivitamin use was most popular (38%) followed by single or combined antioxidant use (21%) and B vitamins (8%) [244]. The primary reason for using dietary supplements was to achieve self-care goals, as a means of ensuring good health, alleviating depression, and for "medicinal" purposes to treat and prevent various illnesses, including the common cold and flu [243].
Epidemiologic and clinical studies that have evaluated dietary supplements in the prevention or treatment of disease are inconsistent, showing little or no benefit. |

That law authorizes a new program so that reports of serious adverse events related to the use of a dietary supplement or over-the-counter drug would be reported to the Food and Drug Administration, FDA, on a priority basis.

Free speech" is granted to pharmaceutical companies, but not to dietary supplement companies. It is my belief that free speech is not free if it only selectively allowed.
So we have a conspiratorial trio now working in concert to keep you stupid and diseased: The mainstream media (which takes billions of dollars each year from drug companies), the drug companies (which earn billions of dollars each year selling advertised drugs), and the FDA (which enforces the monopoly and eliminates competition by censoring truthful information about dietary supplements). |

I recommend to my patients a combination dietary supplement of methylsul-fonylmetbane (MSM) (1,000 mg daily) and vitamin C for its anti-inflammatory effect. I also recommend two other dietary supplements— alpha lipoic acid (50 mg daily), which provides protection against free radicals that can exacerbate eye pressure.. .and L-arginine (1,500 mg, twice daily), which increases circulation.
Also helpful: The herbs grape seed extract (200 mg daily) and green tea extract (200 mg daily), both of which help prevent eye damage. |

But, under the dietary supplement Health and Education Act of 1994 (DSHEA), stevia can be sold as a "dietary supplement"; it's illegal, however, to promote it as a sweetener. (Such claims make a company's shipments subject to seizure, fines, or criminal prosecution.) Moreover, an FDA consumer safety officer told me that "the safety of stevia has been questioned by published studies. And no one has ever provided the FDA with adequate evidence that the substance is safe. |

Is it a food or a dietary supplement? Whey is a natural by-product of the cheese-making process but it typically comes in a powdered supplement form and can be found in most health food stores. The most common forms seen in dietary supplementation are whey protein concentrate and isolate. Whey protein isolate contains ninety percent or more protein and also contains little to no fat or lactose (making it tolerable by most that may be lactose-intolerant). |

Unfortunately, this mentality has ushered in a pill-popping culture with more than half of American adults taking some form of dietary supplement. To meet the growing demand, the supplement industry has grown to include not only dietary supplements, vitamins and minerals, but also herbal products marketed as natural remedies and natural cures.
Like anything that catches on with the public and has the potential for huge profits, the supplement industry became big business. Hundreds of millions of consumers are buying pills, powders, tonics and other formulas to improve their health. |

KENNEDY: Let me make absolutely clear that the Reagan-Udall Foundation will in no way override, overturn or conflict with the dietary supplement Health and Education Act. Nothing in this bill would have that effect.
SEN. ENZI: Yes, we took great pains to make certain there would be no conflict with DSHEA. Regarding foods, and dietary supplements are generally regulated as foods, the general directive of the Foundation is to identify holes in the evaluation of food safety and identify ways to address those deficiencies through collaborative research with industry.

This allowed stevia to be sold as a dietary supplement under legislation called the dietary supplement Health and Education Act of 1994. The FDA, in one of its more politically incorrect debacles, has ruled that
Traditional Preparation stevia is presumed safe as a dietary supplement but is considered unsafe as a food additive. This incongruity openly protects the profit margins of the "sweetener giants. |

COLD-fX is another well-researched panacea for both prevention and treatment of Cold and Flu. It is available over-the-counter from most drugstores. According to credible research of 10 years, COLD-fX regulates both antigen specific acquired and innate immune systems to combat cold and flu viral infection. It will also have effectiveness in the following conditions: travel, work-related fatigue and stress. A 2006 pre-clinical study showed potential benefits in cancer patients. |

That has not been my reading of the bill, but I wonder if other Senators have heard similar concerns?
SEN. HARKIN: Yes, I have received a good many calls as well. And, I have to say that I would be very concerned, as I know the Senator from Utah is, if anything in the bill we are considering, S. |

The best dietary supplement of vitamin A consists of generous quantities of fresh fruits and vegetables. Supplemental forms of vitamin A such as retinyl palmitate and retinyl acetate convert readily into retinol and their potency is listed on the packaging.
With supplemental beta-carotene, two meg of beta-carotene are needed by the body for conversion, resulting in one meg of retinol. This is known as a RAE ratio of 2:1. For beta-carotene in food, the RAE ratio is 12:1, so 12 meg of beta-carotene in food is needed to provide one meg of RAE. |

Resveratrol has a short half life of around 15 minutes. In less than an hour it would degrade in the body. But contrary to what some researchers have claimed, the process of glucuronidation in the liver actually preserves resveratrol, keeping it intact for up to nine hours. Sites of inflammation, infection or malignancy in the body produce an enzyme called glucuronidase, which releases resveratrol from its carrier molecule, and delivers it at the right time in precisely the right place. |

To be assured of adequate folate to prevent neural tube defects, women are advised to take 400 meg (micrograms) of folic acid daily either as a dietary supplement or in fortified food. This folic acid supplementation needs to be taken from one month before conception until the end of the first trimester of pregnancy. To protect against neural tube defects, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has mandated that folic acid be added to enriched grain products. This enrichment of grain with folate is estimated to deliver an average of 100 meg of folic acid daily. |

It is known as a red wine molecule, though it can be consumed as a dietary supplement. A lower risk for lung cancer among wine drinkers compared to consumers of other alcoholic beverages has been observed, which may partly be explained by its resveratrol content. Resveratrol prevents lung cancer via its ability to control the action of genes. [International Journal Cancer 92: 18-25, 2001] Pre-treatment with resveratrol enhances the effect of radiation treatment of the lung. |
Then a neighbor friend suggested he begin taking a red wine molecule called resveratrol, as a dietary supplement.
Harry, a retired plant geneticist, did some research on his own. The evidence seemed convincing enough, so he began taking the red wine pills. Soon Harry was regaining his strength. A man in South Africa with lymphoma, who read of the dietary supplement that could quell cancer. Within weeks his cancer had disappeared.
These patients didn't wait for tomorrow's cancer drugs.
Maybe the nutrients these patients took had nothing to do with these remissions. Maybe they just had tumors that were slow growing. But so many were diagnosed with Stage IV cancer and then suddenly regained a grip on life.
There is something amiss here. Why weren't doctors making these suggestions? Why were these patients suddenly beating their cancer and living normal lives? |

The dietary supplement Health and Education Act is under a state of seize. This would be yet another means. No one is learning about that in health food stores for the simple reason that the U.S. Vitamin Trade Associations are being effectively manipulated from the top down by pharmaceutical interests that have gotten their tentacles into the industry. |
