Antioxidant vitamins taken by tens of millions of people around the world at least won't lead to a longer life, according to an analysis of dozens of studies that adds to evidence questioning the value of the popular, largely synthetically produced, supplements. The large review study of separate studies on thousands of people found no long-life benefit from vitamins A, E and C and beta carotene and selenium, according to the Cochrane Hepato-Biliary Group at Copenhagen University Hospital in Denmark. |

Patients in the last group had low vitamin A levels. supplements of 1000 meg RE (3330 IU) per day improved lung function.13
In a study reported in Nature Medicine in 1997, researchers at Georgetown University in Washington investigating the treatment of emphysema in rats found that the retinoic acid form of vitamin A reversed the lung abnormalities seen in the disease. The researchers induced emphysema in the rats and then gave them injections of retinoic acid for 12 days. The condition of the lungs improved almost to pre-disease levels. |

VITALZYM X
There is some suggestion that Vitalzym X, and other high-potency proteolytic enzymes, create a lysis, or loosening or dissolution, of the fibrin plugs in the vascular system and helps reverse the general fibrosis scarring that goes on in the body. It helps specifically to deal with the inflammation we see in diabetes, particularly Type-l but also Type-2, where the organs are inflamed and stressed and begin to scar. I believe it also prevents cross-linking going to polymerization. |

Consuming small amounts of cinnamon, in foods or supplements, can greatly improve blood sugar levels. In one study, researchers gave cinnamon to 60 overweight people with type 2 diabetes. The dosages were 1, 3, or 6 grams daily for 40 days. People taking cinnamon had decreases in blood sugar ranging from 18 to 29 percent. Although you can buy cinnamon in capsules, it is far less expensive to purchase the ground spice and sprinkle it on oatmeal or fruit, such as apples, cantaloupe, or berries. Take 1 to 6 grams daily. |
Although I frequently recommend a high-potency multivitamin or B-complex vitamin supplement, you might find such supplements of greater benefit in depression if they contain pyridoxyl-5-phosphate, the more biologically active form of vitamin B6. (You'll have to look at the fine print on the label where the ingredients are listed.) If you cannot find a multivitamin or a B-complex supplement with pyridoxyl-5-phosphate, take an additional 50 mg along with your regular supplement. |
Most supplements contain 50 to 65 percent EPA.) The amount of EPA, however, may be more significant than the ratio of EPA to DHA, so you may benefit equally from Carlson Laboratories' fish oil capsules or lemon-flavored liquid fish oil.
For bipolar disorder, consider taking 5 to 15 grams of EPA daily— that's the dose of EPA, not the total amount of oils in the capsules. Start with the lower dose and increase it gradually over several weeks. |
Researchers found that supplements of borage oil, providing 1.3 grams of GLA, help you to become less sensitive to stress. The mechanism is unclear. GLA is an anti-inflammatory dietary fat, however, and stress triggers a heightened inflammatory reaction. Take 1 to 3 grams daily.
Melatonin. If your anxiety levels make it difficult to sleep, take melatonin one to two hours before bedtime. Be sure you are at home when you take it the first time because it may make you drowsy. |
On occasion, inositol will increase symptoms, in which case you should try one of the other recommended supplements.
Niacinamide. Extra amounts of this form of vitamin B3 might be helpful in alleviating anxiety, particularly when combined with the B-complex vitamins and 5-HTP. Try 1,000 mg twice daily. Note: Although the niacin form of vitamin B3 causes an intense flush, niacinamide does not.
Magnesium. A mild deficiency of magnesium has been associated with anxiety. In addition, a lack of magnesium increases blood levels of lactate, which is associated with anxiety. |

Avoid in cases of hemophilia or other risk of hemorrhage, and do not use in conjunction with blood-thinning medications or iodine supplements. Avoid giving willow bark to children with a viral infection accompanied by headache to avoid the risk of Reye's syndrome. Those who suffer from tinnitus or who are allergic to aspirin should use willow with caution.

But while the fructose found in berries, melons, apples, and some root vegetables is naturally occurring and therefore more healthy for you, "the fructose that Americans get from processed foods and beverages, as well as pharmaceuticals, flavors, cosmetics, and dietary supplements, is not derived from fruit," Bianchi explains. "Instead, the fructose typically is chemically refined from corn in the United States. The reason people get confused is because fructose sounds like it's from fruit. |
Many of our clients have been freed from the moodiness they've endured for years, simply by dropping these two items from their menus. No supplements, no other changes, dietary or otherwise, required," continues Ross, who runs the San Francisco-area Recovery Systems Clinic. |
In fact, a four-month pilot study at Baylor College of Medicine and Harvard's Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston found that depressed patients who took omega-3 fatty acid supplements in addition to antidepressants were four times less likely to suffer recurrent mood symptoms than those who took the medication alone.
"Omega-3 fatty acids play an important role in enhancing mood and easing depression," asserts Andrew Stoll, M.D., one of the study's authors. "Unfortunately, omega-3 fatty acids have been depleted by our Western diet since the early twentieth century. |
And Julia Ross, author of The Mood Cure and The Diet Cure, contends that, "Increasing dietary protein and adding serotonin-boosting supplements such as 5-HTP is a more direct, effective, healthier strategy to improve PMS symptoms."
Outsmart Your Hormone-Related Cravings
As frustrating as our hormone-induced cravings may be, we can control them by understanding our triggers. "It's actually empowering if you know when your weaker times are to indulge, because then you can actually make some kind of behavioral changes to reduce the effects," says cravings expert Dr. |
Take sugar out of the mix, add high-quality nutritional supplements, several weeks of an antifungal remedy, and improved self-care, and in one to four months, a more vibrant woman is likely to emerge—free of many debilitating symptoms.
As any beer maker knows, the fermentation process works by combining yeast with sugar. The warmer and moister the environment (like our gastrointestinal and vaginal tracts), the more robustly the yeast can reproduce, especially when it's fed a lot of sugar. |
In addition to eliminating sweets, he recommends getting 8 to 10 hours of sleep a night, treating adrenal and thyroid hormone deficiencies with supplements and herbs, correcting nutritional deficiencies, drinking plenty of water, and, of course, reducing stress and anxiety.
The Metabolic Trickery of Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS)
As you now know, eating too many sweets and quickie carbs ultimately forces your body to produce excess insulin, and in the female body, extra insulin spells trouble for reproductive health. |

Immunity
Adequate vitamin A intake, either from diet or supplements, is very important in boosting immunity and preventing sickness and death in children. Many studies have found that vitamin A supplementation reduces the risk of infectious diseases in areas where vitamin A deficiency is widespread. A recent research review analyzing the results of several studies found that adequate vitamin A intake in children resulted in a 30 per cent decrease in deaths from all causes. Children in developing countries are often at high risk of vitamin A deficiency. |

Biothera WGP 3-6 beta glucan is marketed under Life Source Basics and Imucell WGP brand names, and is included in other immune-boosting supplements as well. There are many beta glucan products offered. Few offer the dosage, molecular weight, or proven science as does Biothera WGP 3-6.
It appears mushroom extracts and beta glucans will be relegated to playing second fiddle in the war against cancer. They are being studied for use with monoclonal antibodies. Mice with tumors survive longer when administered monoclonal antibodies with beta glucan. |

And to top it off, scientific research (financed by the vitamin producers) suggests that taking large doses of supplements may protect you against disease, even though there is no real evidence to support that claim. As seen in the sales figures, the public believes that the more vitamins you take, the healthier you become.
But are vitamins really that good for your health? Despite the massive amounts of vitamins consumed in modem societies, overall health is declining everywhere, except in those countries that still rely mostly on fresh-farmed foods. |
Most bile supplements contain ox bile. Without a gallbladder, you may never again obtain the right amount of bile needed for the proper digestion of food. If you develop symptoms of diarrhea, lower the dosage or discontinue it. Consult with your health practitioner about which product may be the most suitable for you.
Those Who Should Not Use Apple Juice
Some people may have difficulty drinking apple juice in the large quantities required for the liver flush. These include those who suffer from diabetes, hypoglycemia, and yeast infection (Candida), cancer, and stomach ulcers. |

How the B Vitamins Make Energy Production Possible
The main function of the B-vitamin complex is to assist in the production of energy in the body. They have many vital roles in energy production. Please study Figure 1 -24. You have been seeing pieces of this diagram throughout this chapter. |
Cobalamin Coenzyme forms are: Methylcobalamin Deoxyadenosyl cobalamin
Vitamin B,2 supplements are usually in the form of cyanocobalamin, which is easily converted into the two active forms used in the body.
ROLES OF VITAMIN B12
One function of vitamin B]2 is to convert homocysteine to methionine. One of the active forms of cobalamin, methylcobalamin, converts homocysteine using an enzyme that also requires folate. When folate gives up a methyl group, the methylcobalamin coenzyme becomes reactivated. |
BIOAVAILABILITY OF FOLATE AND FOLIC ACID
Synthetic folic acid commonly found in fortified food and in supplements has a higher bioavailability than the naturally occurring folates. It is unusual for a synthetic vitamin to be more potent that a naturally-occurring vitamin. For folates, 100 meg (micrograms) is also 100 meg of Dietary Folate Equivalent (DFE). However, for folic acid, 100 meg is considered to be 170 meg of DFE, if eaten with food. When eaten between meals, 100 meg of folic acid is considered to be 200 meg of DFE. |

Synthetic riboflavin used in supplements and fortified foods and drinks is very likely to have been produced using genetically modified Bacillus subtilis. These bacteria have been altered to increase the bacteria's production of riboflavin. The genes of the bacteria may also have been altered by the addition of antibiotic resistance to ampicillin. This is one possible difference between synthetic and naturally-occurring riboflavin.
Heat does not normally degrade riboflavin. |

Other nutrients also interact with the B vitamins. In one case, a mineral, iron, and an essential amino acid, tryptophan, are both needed to synthesize niacin, vitamin B3. The best way to avoid a deficiency of B vitamins is to eat a varied diet of fresh fruit, an abundance of vegetables, whole grains, legumes, nuts and seeds, and other food as desired. |
Water-soluble vitamins are not toxic when consumed in food. supplements of water-soluble vitamins are also not toxic in normal amounts. One exception is supplemental vitamin Bv but only when taken in the form of niacin, which can cause skin flushing. Another exception is Vitamin C. Vitamin C can cause intestinal irritation, but only when taken in large amounts and in the acidic form (ascorbic acid). When taken in an ascorbated or buffered form, Vitamin C is not irritating, even in large doses. |

On the other hand, lycopene is more available from eggs than from supplements, and cooking tomatoes increases its availability. The usability of vitamins in food varies with the method of preparation. "Far too little is known about nutrient availability as a function of plant variety and maturity." The old canard—more research is needed—is surely true here.
What are we to make of all this? It seems apparent that vitamin E is not effective in the secondary prevention of heart disease or cancer, or in the primary prevention of cancer. |

Indeed, the study found "an unexpected and disturbing increase in heart failure in patients assigned vitamin E," leading to a recommendation that "Vitamin E supplements "should not be used in patients with vascular disease."7 The authors conclude with an admonition: that we should not accept the safety of "natural products" (e.g., vitamins), especially if they have not been proven effective.
The HOPE findings, along with other studies, have produced some definitive official judgment. |
By the year 2000, about 12% of all adults (some 24 million people) in the United States consumed megadoses (400 IU) supplements of vitamin E daily.3 Some 44% of all cardiologists routinely used antioxidants, principally vitamin E, fot primary prevention.4
Alas, it was too good to be true.
With the turn of the millennium, several clinical trials began to report no relationship between vitamin E, usually at a dose of 400 IU, and either cancer or heart disease. |

Of course, when it comes to quality control of herbal supplements, it's important to source your herbs and supplements from trusted companies who have stringent quality control standards. For example, if you are buying spirulina from a company that sources it from Cyanotech in Kona, Hawaii, you know that you're getting spirulina without any heavy metals whatsoever, because it's grown in pristine waters pumped up from the depths of the Pacific Ocean, unaffected by modern industrial run-off or other sources of contamination. |
