The Vitamin D Cure

Water pills (diuretics) will make you lose excessive amounts of potassium and magnesium in your urine, so if you're on water pills, be sure to take supplements as part of your daily regimen. As for potassium, most people need to double the amount they typically consume. So try to increase your intake of potassium-rich foods—vegetables, fruits, and nuts. Try these quick tips: ?Make a habit of consuming a handful of nuts (ten to twelve) each day. ?Fill your fruit bowl with bananas, which will help you remember to eat one a day. ?Don't eat cheese. ?Seldom eat grains. ?

If you choose to use your own brand of Probiotics during the 6-Day Oxygen Colon Cleanse, or on a regular basis, research these supplements well and make sure you are using a very high quality product. Just as the Earth holds an abundance of life forms (sometimes existing harmoniously, while struggling fitfully at other times), the human body likewise harbors a vast internal ecosystem consisting of thousands of billions of living microorganisms that co-exist in peace or in conflict.

The cells in your lungs and breast are able to make that extra amount of activated vitamin D as long as you have a big enough supply of vitamin D from sun or supplements. If you don't, you're out of luck, because your body can't deal with the local threat as effectively. Properties of Vitamin D Vitamin D is a unique hormone that belongs to a group called the steroid hormone family. All the hormones in this family are made from cholesterol, and they include Cortisol, estrogen, progesterone, and testosterone. This family is known for developing partnerships with other hormones.

Hoodia fraud: Counterfeit hoodia gordonii weight loss pills dominate the market

Easy money for crooks Based on my own research, I now believe that as much as 75% of all the hoodia gordonii supplements sold in the United States today are counterfeit (my estimate used to be lower, but things have gotten worse). In other words, the hucksters and con artists who seem to dominate this industry are scamming the American people in a big way to the tune of hundreds of millions of dollars. You might ask, "Why are there so many crooks in the hoodia business? You don't see crooks in the business of selling vitamin B12 or cod liver oil or other supplements. Why hoodia?

The Myth of Alzheimer's: What You Aren't Being Told About Today's Most Dreaded Diagnosis

Department of Health and Human Services offers this advice, which I quite agree with: "Because AD is such a devastating disease, caregivers and patients may be tempted by untried, unproven, unscientific cures, supplements, or prevention strategies. Before trying pills or anything else that promises to prevent AD, people should use caution and check with their doctor first. These purchases might be unsafe or a waste of money. They might even interfere with other medical treatments that have been prescribed.
But even so, my wife has been encouraging me to take n-3 fatty acid supplements. I am beginning to do so, but admittedly have trouble remembering to take them each day. I might add that, unlike many of my colleagues, I never took vitamin E, which was all the rage in the 1990s before recently fizzling out in the wake of inconclusive randomized control trials. N-3 fatty acids are being hyped in ways reminiscent of vitamin E, and beta-carotene before it, and oat bran before that.

The Sinatra Solution Metabolic Cardiology

The body has reductase enzymes which take the ingested coenzyme Qio in food and supplements and convert most of it into ubiquinol. During the electron transfer process in the mitochondrial membrane, the ubiquinol and ubiquinone are readily converted from one form to another. Ubiquinol has been developed as a commercial supplement only recently, and one small study has suggested that it has excellent absorption properties when compared with the non-solubilized form of coenzyme Qiq. The animal model has also suggested that ubiquinol has good relative bioavailability when compared with ubiquinone.
Patients on diuretics, or those with low dietary levels of magnesium should consider magnesium supplements to ward off possible deficiencies. It must also be remembered that blood tests alone may not be sufficient to assess whether or not a patient is deficient. Mononuclear blood level analysis is much more predictive for this purpose. Atherosclerotic Heart Disease Plenty of studies have looked at the relationship between magnesium intake and atherosclerosis. To date, results haven't been conclusive.
In diets that are becoming increasingly deficient in red meat, adding these important amino acids to carnitine supplements makes sense. Supplementing with an amino-carnitine containing either of these amino acids helps the body with natural synthesis of carnitine. The literature also supports corresponding insufficiencies of other amino acids, including arginine. Second, certain amino acids have direct physiological effects that work in concert with carnitine. Remember, arginine is an amino acid that dilates blood vessels (a vasodilator).
But consumers need to suspend their fear of reprisal and tell physicians and pharmacists of any supplements, herbs, or alternative practices they may be using so potential interactions can be identified. I understand that, in our age of data banks, many pharmacies keep track of what their clients are taking and their computers "red flag" possible adverse interactions. Physicians will soon have access to that information to inform their patients about potentially dangerous drug/supplement reactions. (Now that I have that off my chest, let's get back to Fran. . . .

There are many coenzyme Qi0 supplements available commercially, but they are not equally bioavailable. As a fat-soluble compound, coenzyme Q10 is poorly absorbed in water and follows the same pathway of intestinal absorption as other fats that are consumed. The breakdown of fat substances requires emulsification in the intestine (with the help of bile salts) and the formation of micelles, which are electrically charged colloidal molecules, prior to absorption.

Timeless Secrets of Health & Rejuvenation: Unleash The Natural Healing Power That Lies Dormant Within You

Although Vitamin D is available in some food sources and supplements, about 90 percent of the vitamin is produced by the body in direct response to sun exposure. In fact, the quickest and most efficient way top obtain enough cancer-preventing Vitamin D is sun exposure. Although direct contact with sunlight has prevented cancer and many other diseases for thousands of years, it is discouraged and even warned against by today's health care industry. As is so often the case, the purely symptom-oriented medical theories fall short in explaining the causes of disease.

Senna is an herbal stimulant laxative that is toxic to animal muscle tissue, yet this substance is a common ingredient in many herbal teas, weight-loss supplements, vitamins, and especially laxatives.70 In fact, Senna is often prescribed as a "natural medicine" for curing constipation. Despite the alarming fact of its toxicity, senna continues to be included in hundreds of products while simultaneously causing a host of very serious health conditions, diseases, and even death in high enough concentrations.

In a study involving almost 48,000 men reported in 1997 in the American Journal of Epidemiology researchers found a lower risk of ulcer in those with high intakes of vitamin A, either from food or supplements.17 Interactions with other nutrients Vitamin E plays a role in the absorption, storage and utilization of vitamin A and protects it from oxidation. Vitamin E may protect against some of the effects of excess vitamin A. Vitamin A is necessary for calcium metabolism and is also necessary for the absorption, metabolism and storage of iron.

How to slash national health care costs by 90% through education, nutrition, and a ban on junk food marketing

Mike Adams, the Health Ranger
See article keywords and concepts
Yet another excellent strategy for slashing national health care costs is to allow nutritional supplement manufacturers to tell the truth about what their supplements do for your health. This is something the FDA has disallowed for decades. They have never allowed manufacturers of nutritional supplements to make true statements about what those supplements can do for your health.

Transdermal Magnesium Therapy

Mark Sircus

Mildred Seelig concluded: "The studies that employed the larger supplements of magnesium did in fact show that it has ability to lower high blood pressure"38 Magnesium prevents blood clotting and arterial spasm. Drug therapy in elderly patients with hypertension has become a universal recommendation. Lifestyle modifications, such as reduced salt intake, regular exercise, and controlling body weight, may not be effective in reducing complications of hypertension in elderly adults. Magnesium is even being added to salt preparations, with significant effects on lowering blood pressure.
Hoffman carefully measures magnesium and found that many patients with low magnesium who take oral supplements alone do not normalize. Dr. Mildred Seelig, renowned researcher of magnesium, predicts that through oral supplementation, it would take six months to normalize magnesium levels in a woman who is magnesium deficient. Transdermal magnesium therapy speeds up the process of nutrient replenishment in much the same way as intravenous methods. For children with neurological disorders or asthma, transdermal magnesium is like an oxygen mask. Dr.
She recommends all women going through menopause take magnesium supplements along with Flax Seed.19 Up to 80% of American women experience hot flashes during menopause while only 10% of Japanese women experience that symptom. Some researchers speculate that these differences may be due to differences in diet, lifestyle, and/or cultural attitudes toward aging.20 But these suggested differences are vague and global in scope. In all likelihood the big difference is magnesium.
These and other conditions make oral magnesium supplements intake chancy and inefficient compared to the new transdermal magnesium chloride mineral therapy that this book introduces. The health status of the digestive system and the kidneys significantly influence magnesium levels. Magnesium is absorbed in the intestines and then transported through the bloodstream to cells and tissues. Approximately one-third to one-half of dietary magnesium is absorbed into the body.

Your Symptoms Are Real: What to Do When Your Doctor Says Nothing Is Wrong

So one reason these supplements might not work is that there is either too little or too much melatonin in a tablet. Because of this, a new drug that acts like melatonin looks interesting. The drug, ramelteon (Rozerem), is FDA-approved for insomnia. This government approval means that consumers can be sure that the amount of drug stated on the packet is actually in the pill and that it has proven to be useful by a double-blind placebo-controlled trial. However, when the over-the-counter drugs don't work, this is not my next step.
Some of my patients tell me they feel better after taking supplements. The problem with such a testimonial is that it is from only one individual. While improvement is wonderful even for one person, you can't count on being number two. The FDA never allows a drug to come to market until it has been shown to work across large numbers of patients. The long wait for approval may seem frustrating or even cruel, but it's far better than the alternatives: allowing drugs with dangerous side effects to come to market or allowing patients to rely on drugs that cause improvement in few patients, or none.
In fact, you should cut out desserts altogether for these three weeks—don't even think about buying the so-called low-carb desserts or supplements that are now filling the supermarket. For this diet to work, you really have to cut back on carbohydrates, not substitute one for another. You should cut out fruits, too (they're loaded with sugar), and eat only green leafy vegetables—no beets or carrots, and no tomatoes or tomato products, such as ketchup. Plus, you should drink at least eight glasses of water a day.
I want to know about all of the medicines and supplements my patients are taking and how much of each: prescriptive, over-the-counter, herbs, or something from the health-food store. Everything. That way I get an accurate index. When your doctor asks you about medicines, tell him or her about everything you take in the hope of improving your health. The Case for and against Nutraceuticals We've all heard a lot lately about nutraceuticals. These naturally occurring chemicals are a part of our food but in addition to having nutritional value, they can influence how we feel.

Selenium Selenium supplements may improve mood and reduce anxiety, fatigue and depression in those whose intake is low. A 1996 study done at the USDA Human Nutrition Research Center in San Francisco suggests that people with low selenium levels might experience depressed moods, supporting the idea that selenium plays a special role in the brain. However, the study did not find improvements with selenium supplementation in people eating a typical American diet.7 Herbal medicine and depression St John's wort (Hypericum perforatum) is a well-known herbal treatment for depression.
Folic acid supplements may improve mood in depressed people, especially those who are taking drugs which interfere with folic acid metabolism. Vitamin B12 Vitamin B12 deficiency eventually leads to a deterioration in mental functioning, to neurological damage, and to a number of psychological disturbances including memory loss, dementia, moodiness, confusion and delusions. Vitamin B12 is involved in the manufacture of myelin, the fatty sheath protein which insulates the nerves. It is also essential in the formation of neurotransmitters and in the normal functioning ofblood cells.
As estrogen may suppress vitamin B6 metabolism, supplements may be beneficial for pregnant women, and for those on the contraceptive pill or hormone replacement therapy (HRT) who suffer from mood swings and depression. Vitamin B6 is also used to treat stress conditions. Folate Folate deficiency leads to confusion, forgetfulness, insomnia, irritability, depression and mood changes. It is often seen in those affected by psychiatric disorders, particularly depressive illness, and may play a part in causing or aggravating psychiatric disturbances.
