The Free Radical impact
History of Free Radicals
In 1954, the free radical theory of aging was first described by Dr. Denham Harman, who declared that a "single common process, modifiable by genetic and environmental factors, was responsible for aging and death of all living things." He identified this process saying, "Aging is caused by free radical reactions, which may be caused by the environment, from disease and intrinsic reactions within the aging process." Dr. |

D. In addition, people who receive adequate sunlight exposure do not need as much vitamin D in their diet as do people who receive minimal sunlight exposure.
Vitamin D increases both calcium (p. 277) and phosphorus absorption. Vitamin D has also been reported to increase absorption of aluminum. Increased blood levels of calcium (which can be a marker for vitamin D status) have been linked to heart disease (p. 32).7 Some,8 but not all/ research suggests that vitamin D may slightly raise blood levels of cholesterol (p. 79) in humans. |

And I do meditation, and exercise.
The major reason I started to see a nutritionist was, of course the wake-up call, the cervical cancer, which was just diagnosed three months ago. But I had also had ulcerative colitis for almost twentv years.
I feel like I now have energy again. I exercise at least several times a week, which was literally impossible before. I even had trouble getting up a flight of subway steps without feeling exhausted at the top. So I have several different things that I am working with: nutrition, meditation, and detoxification. I'm working on it. |

Don't Gas Up
The first of these enzymes is sold as a gas-buster named Beano. Considering beans' gaseous reputation, that's an appropriate brand name for the digestive enzyme known as alpha-galactosidase. Studies show that Beano may be able to decrease gastrointestinal disturbances like flatulence and possibly diarrhea as well.
Here's how it works: Legumes like beans and peas—and cruciferous vegetables like cauliflower and cabbage—all contain hard-to-digest sugars that are converted into the gases carbon dioxide, hydrogen and methane by bacteria inside your intestines. |

Minerals (including those needed to maintain powerful immunity) are leached from the body by repeated vomiting. A mineral supplement helps replace them, as do nourishing herbal infusions.
Step 5b. Use Drugs
• Orthodox medicine gives drugs such as Zofran (most expensive), Dexamethasone (a steroid), and Compazine (suppositories which are very strong but may suddenly become ineffective) before the chemotherapy dose to prevent and moderate nausea. k Stomach distress is the usual reason cimetidine is prescribed. |

There are, however, several specific uses for probiotics. The four primary areas of uses related to chronic candidiasis are promotion of proper intestinal environment, postantibiotic therapy, vaginal yeast infections, and urinary tract infections.
The dosage of a commercial probiotic supplement is based upon the number of live organisms. The ingestion of 1-10 billion viable L. acidophilus or B. bifidum cells daily is a sufficient dosage for most people. |

All of the substances described as antioxidants or free-radical scavengers help to slow the aging process; reduce the risk of cancer and heart disease; decrease skin wrinkling due to sun exposure, smoking or age; detoxify environmental pollutants including cigarette smoke; decrease the production of age pigment in the skin ("liver spots" or "age spots"); and protect you from the damaging effects of X-rays and ultraviolet light. |

The use of DMSO (p. 291) for therapeutic applications is controversial; but there is some evidence that when applied directly to the skin, DMSO has antiinflammatory properties and alleviates pain, such as that associated with rheumatoid arthritis.4647 DMSO appears to reduce pain by inhibiting the transmission of pain messages by nerves.48

Hypothyroidism
Chronic infections are common in people who have an underactive thyroid, because hypothyroidism can lead to immune system suppression; these infections can include chronic lung conditions such as asthma, pneumonia, and bronchitis. (See Appendix A.)
Environmental Factors
On the long list of environmental factors that can cause asthma are pollens, spores, danders, dusts, cigarette smoke, fireplace smoke, and chemicals polluting the air. |

C and E after coronary bypass surgery [88]. The results were that in mild and moderate cases the vitamins led to a significant slowing down of the disease process in the arteries as shown by the X-ray pictures. However, this was not true in severe cases. The slowing down of disease was largely due to the intake of over 100 mg per day of vitamin E.
(27) A similar investigation was carried out on the carotid arteries in 1,187 people [21]. The investigators used ultrasound to measure in the living person the degree to which atherosclerosis had blocked the artety. |

Amounts needed to treat rickets should be determined by a nutritionally oriented doctor, and will depend on the age, weight, and condition of the child. For prevention of rickets, 400 IU of vitamin D per day is considered reasonable. Doctors often suggest 1,600 IU per day for treating rickets caused by a lack of dietary vitamin D. |
