Prevention: As a preventive measure take supplements of calcium and magnesium, one part calcium to two parts magnesium, as well as a multivitamin that contains 50 mg of B6 and substantial quantities of vitamins C and E.
During the day take 5 silica 6x cell (tissue) salts under the tongue. Be aware of your electrolyte balance. For potassium, eat bananas, oranges, beans, fresh vegetables, and whole grains. Exercise regularly to improve muscle tone. Wear shoes with good supports during the day. |
Avoid coffee, tea, mint, almonds, cloves, cucumbers, bell peppers, tomatoes, apples, peaches, plums, apricots, cherries, currants, grapes, raisins, and all berries, and be aware that aspirin, blood thinners such as Coumadin or heparin, oral contraceptives and other estrogen supplements, and prolonged use of nosedrops or nasal sprays may contribute to nosebleeds. Frequent nosebleeds may also be an indication of high blood pressure (hypertension).

Pleasant, Texas, the researchers discovered that patients with carpal tunnel syndrome actually had a severe deficiency of vitamin B6, or pyridoxine, and that supplements of B6 led to disappearance of the symptoms. "They are improved so much that the patients do not need orthopedic surgery for their hands," says Dr. Folkers. "And what I think is almost unbelievable (but it seems to be true) is that individuals who have had symptoms for years—a decade, even 15 years—show remarkable reversal and improvement of their condition.
"It doesn't even take huge doses of B6, either," he continues. |
One reader reported success after following the advice of nutritionist Adelle Davis, who said she cured her daughter's stubborn case of athlete's foot with yeast drinks and vitamin B supplements. In addition to this, this reader bathed her feet with goldenseal powder, dried her feet and then dusted them with more powdered goldenseal.
Using a solution of dried comfrey leaves and water as a foot soak resulted in "dramatic improvement" for one man.

Many doctors know what causes bed-wetting. The problem is that each one "knows" a different reason. The situation is actually quite revealing of the narrow and prejudiced thinking that too often pervades medical practice. |

Take supplements with a meal. Breakfast is a good suggestion for this since it is the start of the day's activity. Taking vitamins with a meal will help assimilation. Some people use digestive enzymes to aid assimilation.
3. Space water soluble vitamins by taking them at different times throughout the day. This way the body is able to use more of the vitamin rather than just excreting the excess. |

Headaches
About Headaches
^Jl^eadaches are painful not just for the people who have them but for the doctors asked to treat them. In a 1994 survey conducted by Consumer Reports magazine, medical treatment for headaches was voted the single largest category of patient dissatisfaction—nearly 25 percent.
Such discontent implies a huge number of people. |
Medical World News, a periodical read by many doctors, led off its January 1993 issue with an article entitled "Vitamins: Emerging as Disease Fighters, Not Just supplements." The article said that new studies on the role of vitamins are shifting the foundations of nutrition research, policy, and public healrh in this country.
A whole new era appears to be dawning where physicians will be guided in their treatment of illness by integrative methods combining the best of pharmaceutical, surgical, and natural tools available to them. |

Some Supplemental Advice
The "stones and supplements" issue has been a controversial one in the nutrition field. We find that the likelihood of developing kidney stones as a result of nutrient supplementation has been exaggerated. That doesn't mean that we discount the possibility entirely, however.
In particular, we'd like to pass along some thoughts about three nutrients.
Vitamin C. Some vitamin C is converted to oxalic acid, which is a common substance in kidney stones. |

For decades, only a small minority of nutritionally oriented physicians advocated supplements as a potent, safe, and inexpensive way to help treat illness and create optimum health.
Current nutritional research has weakened the conventional viewpoint and supported the minority idea. For one thing, nutritionists acknowledge that huge numbers of people fail to eat anything resembling a balanced or nutritionally sound diet. |

Vitamin E in the body is destroyed by chlorinated drinking water, rancid oils (most polyunsaturated oils), oral contraceptives (estrogenic compounds), and pollution. Those living in highly polluted areas or ingesting E-destructive products need higher than normal amounts of the vitamin. After harmful circumstances and bad habits are eliminated and the body is balanced, vitamin E from whole-food sources will be sufficient.

Unlike infectious diarrhea, diarrhea caused by high amounts of vitamin C or magnesium is not generally accompanied by other signs of illness; the same is true when the problem comes from sorbitol or fructose.2 In these cases, avoiding the offending supplement or food brings rapid relief.
Drinking lots of coffee causes diarrhea in some people.2 People with chronic diarrhea who drink coffee should avoid all coffee for a few days to evaluate whether coffee is the culprit.
Allergies and food sensitivities (p. 8) are common triggers for diarrhea. |

The widespread use of refrigeration in the U.S. has greatly reduced the number of cases of stomach cancer in the western world. This is because certain naturally occurring compounds found in food can spoil and turn carcinogenic if food is not properly refrigerated. Stomach cancer, however, is still fairly common in China, where refrigeration is not as prevalent, particularly in small rural villages. There is evidence, however, that vitamins, particularly antioxidants, can help reduce the risk of stomach cancer. |
Although no side effects from this high dose have been reported, I recommend that biotin be taken for three months, stopped for one month, and then continued. I believe that this system will prevent blood levels of biotin from becoming too high. Good food sources include fruit, nuts, brewer's yeast, beef liver, peanut butter, cauliflower, egg yolk, and whole-grain foods.
Minerals
Calcium—If your nails are brittle and constantly dry, splitting, chipping, and peeling, include more calcium-rich foods in your diet. |
Kiwifruit, currants, oranges, apples, cranberries, blueberries, papaya, strawberries, avocados, pineapples, blackberries, grapes, figs, bananas, and grapefruits blended together will produce a powerhouse of vitamin C and citrus bioflavonoids.
Personal Advice
Once again, common sense should prevail in the event of an injury. If the trauma causes severe pain, if the injury is to a joint or its ligaments, if there is numbness or loss of function (for instance, if you can't move fingers or toes), or if you suspect a fracture, don't self-treat. See a doctor. |

• Take calcium (up to 1,500 milligrams) and magnesium (up to 1,000 milligrams a day). Both may be very helpful in relieving acute cramps (see Chapter Six for dose precautions). The glycinate form of magnesium is highly absorbable. Less than half the above dose can be effective and is less likely to cause diarrhea.
HERBAL REMEDIES
• Several herbs offer effective acute symptomatic relief for menstrual cramps. Try any one. |

Herbal recommendations for eczema
A number of herbal substances can be used as alternatives to the cortisone-containing creams, lotions, and ointments used for the temporary relief of eczema. Extracts of licorice (glycyrrhetinic acid) and German chamomile are the most active.2 Natural creams/ointments containing one or both of these herbs can be used in place of cortisone preparations.

After 18 months—by which time the researchers estimated that four of the patients should normally have died—all were still alive. In addition, none of the patients showed signs of additional metastasis, they hadn't lost weight, and they were able to lower their doses of pain medications. Six of the patients even showed partial remission.
Despite these seemingly impressive results, it's important to remember that this was a small study. A lot more research is needed to explore the benefits (or potential hazards) of this particular treatment. |

Further, calcium and magnesium share the same transport mechanism for absorption across the intestinal barrier. Excessive calcium supplementation may overwhelm this mechanism, inhibiting the absorption of magnesium, thereby aggravating a preexisting magnesium deficiency or inducing a magnesium deficiency where it might not otherwise occur. Magnesium has also been identified as a common cause of osteoporosis in celiacs, even on a gluten-free diet. |
