His treatment program, based on a natural foods diet, extensive use of vitamins and other supplements, Chinese herbs, exercise, stress reduction, and the cultivation of a positive attitude, produced "a stability rate of 90 percent, meaning that these patients either improved or did not further decline in their diagnosis. The survival rate during that same period was
98 percent. There were only 3 deaths out of 134 HIV-positive patients, including 30 who had full-blown AIDS symptoms."41
These numbers are staggering in a medical system that considers HIV to be a death sentence. |

C&EN cites as an example of this a professor of environmental medicine in Denmark, Phillipe Grandjean, writing about a WHO study on fluorides stating, "Information which could cast any doubt on the advantage of fluoride supplements was left out by the Task Group. Unless I had been present myself, I would have found it hard to believe." (Page 36.)

Only synthetic supplements achieve drug status.
BACK TO THE THYROID AND THE ENDOCRINE SYSTEM
The endocrine system and immune system are the most vitamin- and mineral-dependent systems. Our individual survival depends upon their health. There are several substances to be alert to that are potentially dangerous and poisonous to the glands. Sodium fluoride is one of them. In its natural state, fluorine is an essential trace mineral present in bones and teeth as fluoride, where it helps calcium make these tissues hard. |
It is usually not mentioned that unrealistic pharmacological dosages are needed to induce toxicity, and that natural food source supplements never come close to approaching those levels in recommended doses. Only synthetic vitamins approach these mega-levels in the name of "high potency". What is ironic about such expressed fears of toxic levels of nutrients by medical people is that toxicology itself is the cornerstone of their approach. This is no secret to anyone who understands modern medicine. |
So, why take expensive nutritional supplements that are only going to go into a toxic system? Cleanse first, fortify second. Then, during the fortification, be consistent in a detoxifying lifestyle with the right variety of certified organically grown foods, and you will be as healthy as is possible, given the limitations of the world that we've created. |
He was a leader in developing chelated mineral supplements. This significantly enhanced the delivery of the mineral across the gut barrier into the bloodstream. A chelated mineral, as mentioned, is one that is bound to amino acids. As the amino acid is easily absorbed, the heavier mineral "hitchhikes" a ride through the intestinal wall into the bloodstream.
Dr. Lee built on much of Dr. Miller's work on minerals. In his studies on calcium, Dr. Miller found that the vitamin that controlled calcium absorption into the blood had a natural antagonist, unofficially called vitamin F. |

Duke notes that studies show whole plant supplements are more effective than single components or "standardized" chemicals in anti-toxic action.
Rosemary is listed among the most ancient of all medicinal herbs. For thousands of years it has been known particularly for its ability to improve the function of the mind. Ancient texts describe how concoctions of rosemary were used to stimulate the mind enhance mood boost intellectual powers, and improve memory. In fact, it is most famous as a memory aid. Yet, it was also famous for combating disorders of the nerves as well as arthritis. |
What is perhaps most disturbing about these findings is the fact that this is occurring even though nearly half of all Americans take synthetic vitamin C in multiple vitamins or other supplements. The conclusion is the synthetic vitamin is poorly utilized and/or metabolized. It may be that the synthetic C is rejected by the cells as compared to the natural type and/or that it is not retained within the cells properly. Obviously, only natural vitamin C from food or food extracts offers reliable, prolonged—and 100% safe-— protection. |
If supplements can be taken by mouth, try BromaZyme and/or HerbSorb. Both are well tolerated and are highly effective in reversing digestive disorders and/or pain.
Special Note: in this and all subsequent illnesses described in this book several natural cures are listed.
Things to avoid
• don't eat anything for at least 24 hours, in other words, rest the gut until the individual improves. At most, drink pure water or perhaps eat a small amount of raw honey.
• don't take aspirin or other anti-pain/anti-inflammation drugs.
Aching feet
No one can afford to suffer with aching or tired feet. |

Budwig felt that vitamin and mineral supplements did more harm than good. She advocated a diet of at least 50 percent fresh raw vegetables, fruits, and nuts.
• It's vitally important to nourish your immune system when you have a diagnosis of cancer. A strong immune system is better able to stop recurrence and metastases, and help you heal from surgery and adjuvant treatments. See Chapter 4.
• Immune strengthening therapies measure their results differently than orthodox treatments. |
Thyroid hormone supplements are reported to shrink cysts and eliminate breast pain.
• Wild yam-based progesterone creams (e.g., Progest) may soften and dissolve breast lumps during the fertile years, but ought to be avoided by pre- and post-menopausal women, whose breast cancer risk increases with increasing exposure to progesterone.
• Diuretic drugs are prescribed for women with breast lumps, but their hormone-like effects can increase pain and lumpiness.
• Danazol (danocrin) is prescribed for women with multiple painful cysts in their breasts. |
And I avoid: Vitamin/mineral supplements, chlorine, nitrates, tobacco, prescription hormones, TV, white flour, processed foods, and non-organic animal products. |
Selenium is the anti-cancer mineral. supplements of selenocysteine, selenomethionine selenium (1 mg daily), and sodium selenite (90 meg) can slow or stop the growth stage of cancer and help prevent recurrence by suppressing cancer's ability to proliferate. Clinical and population studies have confirmed its ability to reduce cancer death rates, enhance immune system functioning, and prevent chromosome damage during radiation treatments. (More on selenium: pages 51-52.) Caution: Selenium may enhance cancer growth unless taken with vitamin E (at least 200 IU daily). |

This will, of course, require adding tablets of ascorbic acid to the list of supplements. If the acidity of ascorbic acid is disturbing— which it is to some people tending toward hyperacidity— sodium ascorbate can be used. It is the same vitamin with the acidity neutralized, though this form can't be used by those on a low-salt diet.
If you bruise easily, or if an IUD contraceptive device causes bleeding, in the absence of organic disease, adding bioflavonoids to the intake of Vitamin C may be helpful. |

In each case, diet changes or supplements can help protect against the assault on your tissues. Researchers have also tested how diet affects cancer, with the aim of reducing the risk of painful recurrences.
Foods can not only help prevent these injuries; they can also help shape your body's response. When your joints ache, for example, the pain, stiffness, and even the joint damage itself are caused by an inflammatory response that has gotten out of control. |

Depression is a classic symptom, which can be corrected by supplementation with zinc and vitamin B6. According to Dr. Carl Pfeiffer, who helped establish the importance of zinc for brain function, "We have never seen postnatal depression or psychosis in any of our patients treated with zinc and B6."
Another potential cause is lack of omega-3 fats. Eating oily fish, and supplementing fish oils, zinc, and B complex, can ensure that a new mother doesn't develop postpartum depression. |

However, if vitamins and supplements are consumed in addition to these foods, an imbalance of nutrients will occur; the excess of concentrated nutrients will cause a relative deficiency of all the nutrients not taken—neglected vitamins, the water, fiber, protein, and carbohydrates left behind. |

By increasing our intake of a variety of plant foods in our diet and as supplements, not only can we obtain optimal nutrition, but the myriad natural chemicals in herbs may someday help us with the aches and pains of everyday life.
As self-care and alternative medicine spread, they may help modern medicine avoid a looming financial catastrophe in the next ten years. Today we have a mature herbal medicine system in Germany where a book called The German Commission Monograph E specifies methods of manufacturing a discrete number of commonly used herbs. |
In fact, compelling science and bitter experience have taught us that there are some supplements you really do need in order to be healthy, because they are not eaten routinely by most Americans. A serious birth defect, spina bifida, in which the spinal cords of newborn infants are not fused properly, has been shown to be due to deficiencies of folic acid in pregnant women. And a calcium deficiency has been shown to lead to osteoporosis, or a thinning of the bones. |
Beyond these few supplements, there are others you may wish to take and I will tell you about those. They are for the more nutrition savvy among you who would like to go beyond the basics. v Selenium, 50 to 200 micrograms per day in the form of selenomethionine. Many parts of the United States have low-selenium soil, and selenium is important in protecting DNA from oxidant damage since it is essential for the function of an enzyme called "glutathione peroxidase," which converts damaging oxygen-charged molecules to their harmless counterparts. |
Some of these nutrients are now available in the form of supplements, but none of these acts as a "magic bullet" by itself to ensure lifelong freedom from cancer. When considering the ideal cancer-preventive diet, it makes sense to look at the whole diet—a combination of many different foods containing many different compounds—rather than trying to isolate single nutrients as preventives or cures.
Some micronutrients inhibit tumor initiation by preventing carcinogenic chemicals from coming into contact with DNA. |
While I am a strong proponent of impeccable dietary habits throughout life, I'm also a realist who sees that supplements are necessary for the elderly, who are unlikely to get what they need without them. Women over fifty need 1,500 milligrams of calcium because the loss of estrogen reduces the efficiency of calcium absorption. Men and women need vitamin D, due to multiple defects with aging in vitamin D formation, absorption, and conversion into active forms. |
Of course, supplements don't make up for missing foods, so this diet—while it produces temporary weight loss—does not do so in a healthy way. Of course, the meat industry and the USDA are in love with this diet. It is the first diet book to have caused an increase in red-meat sales, which were slumping. Over the past five years, steak houses have been the fastest-growing restaurant category. Perhaps the photograph in Time magazine of Dr. Atkins slicing a big hunk of roast beef on his sixty-ninth birthday helped to convey the message that Americans who want to lose weight can now eat meat. |

While the use of supplements as medicine to treat specific conditions is eminently rational, "the shotgun approach"13 of general nutritional supplementation is not^jf aking sixteen or twenty nutrients in pill form "just in case" there aren't enough in the wholesome foods also eaten indicates fear and mistrust of food, and of nature itself. As long as the fear of not having enough motivates our choices, we will always be deficient, and nothing will ever be enough. |

I've been very religious about taking the supplements, and judging from the various effects I'm having, they are doing their job. Some of the changes I've experienced are:
• Weight loss: 30 percent of goal.
• Broke my self-imposed five-mile running barrier for the first time in fifteen years, running eight miles.
• / had lost part of my sense of smell five years ago, and it has definitely improved since starting the program.
• Increased hair growth and decrease in amount of gray.
• Large increase in energy—no more comatose state at 3 p.m. every day.
• Increase in self-esteem. |
They had their negative comments about the number of supplements I take. However, I know the benefits of the changes.
With the first two weeks of the program I saw and felt significant changes in my body. I no longer had the bloated feeling in my stomach. My energy level increased. People think I'm eight to ten years younger than I am. I have comments about the radiance of my skin. Host twenty pounds without dieting! I've packed on five to seven pounds of muscle. My workouts are energy-filled. I lift more weight than ever before. I run three to four miles, three to four times a week. |
Yet, when it comes to doing something good for our bodies, such as eating healthy, nourishing foods, exercising, even taking vitamins and supplements, we limit ourselves. Remember this warning when you read what I recommend for this anti-aging protocol, when you hear yourself say, "What do you mean I have to take . . ."
We are ultraliberal in creating disease and radically conservative in the areas of preventing and treating it. To live longer and healthier, these conditions must switched.
Nevertheless, if you only follow the diet from your teens, you would double your life span. |

MSM and Constipation
Colon disorders read like a who's who of wretchedness—from bloating and abdominal pain to diverticulitis, inflammatory bowel conditions, and colon cancer. Constipation is right up there at the top of the list—a condition in which bowel movements are infrequent or difficult. |

They work out; they eat foods that are perceived to be healthy; they take supplements; they wear trendy clothes—all to maintain a grasp on youth.
Why is it, then, that some people remain youthful well into what is considered middle or even old age, while others begin to show marked signs of aging in their twenties? In my own family, virtually all the men on my father's side were either prematurely gray or bald. My hair was already thinning and graying at age eighteen and, by twenty-five, I was letting my hair grow a bit longer to make the hair loss less obvious. |

When supplements are used medicinally, careful attention has to be paid to the dosage. They'll help fill in a deficiency, but once they've done so, their work is over and they should be discontinued. They are of course extremely useful in cases of clinical deficiency or extraordinary individual need. However, in the final instance, single-element substances such as vitamins and minerals cannot truly heal, because they themselves are not whole. Furthermore, because they lack the life energy of plants, they cannot stimulate our system to extract what it needs from foods. |
