Two forms of vitamin D that we examine in this book are the vitamin D you make with sunlight or take in the form of supplements and activated vitamin D. Your body's actual supply of vitamin D determines in large part how much activated vitamin D you can make. Keep in mind that activated vitamin D is the potent hormone that does most of the work.
We use the terms "vitamin D" and "activated vitamin D" interchangeably. We don't advocate taking the prescription form of activated D (calcitriol) as part of the Vitamin D Cure. |
Cover your bases with other supplements.
5. Add a little exercise.
This program can literally give you a new lease on good health. But first find out if you actually need more vitamin D. Most people do, but you won't know for sure until you take the quiz in chapter 4 or have your doctor do a blood test that shows your vitamin D level.
If you discover that you're D-deficient, like most North Americans, proceed to the rest of the steps. You will get started on the right amount of vitamin D supplementation for your weight. |

If anything, the FDA seemingly just wants to wipe out supplements altogether.
On the other hand, do we need more regulation for nutritional supplements in this country? There are, after all, some con artists out there selling products. I don't think we need new regulations. I think we just need to enforce the existing laws. You see, this particular problem I investigated and reported on was not a supplement-regulation problem; this was a criminal problem. |

Juices fortified with vitamin D can also boost exposure, as can taking supplements.
CURCUMIN. According to a recent study from the National Institutes of Health, turmeric, an ancient spice long used in traditional Asian medicine, may hold promise for the prevention of rheumatoid arthritis and osteoporosis. Scientists tested the extract of curcuminfound in this common spice—to see if it could help to stave off rheumatoid arthritis in lab animals. |

Jim had heard about D-ribose, L-carnitine, and coenzyme Q10, so he asked his doctor if he should try these supplements to improve the energy in his heart. Jim was told, "No. There simply isn't enough science to show that these work." Undaunted, Jim made an appointment with a second, and then a third, cardiologist to seek advice on taking these important life-giving nutrients. |

Using a mouse model of MS, neurologists recently found that doses of glucosamine similar to those commonly taken as supplements dramatically delayed the onset of MS symptoms and improved the ability of lab animals to walk and move. Researchers believe that glucosamine may prove useful in human trials for those suffering from MS.
PROBIOTICS. One area in which a great deal of research has been done in autoimmune-disease patients is that of probiotic supplementation. |
As consumers begin to demand more options for difficult-to-treat autoimmune diseases, biotech companies are increasingly turning toward what industry and consumers refer to as "nutraceuticals"— supplements that they hope will compete with prescription drugs. Likewise, research institutes that have long specialized in conventional, Westernized medical care are starting to investigate whether plant extracts and herbal preparations may yield promising results for patients. |

While middle-aged men across the country leapt at the chance to take prescription drugs like Viagra®, Cialis® or Levitra® to improve sexual performance, others looked to more natural supplements like horny goat weed. Yes, you read that correctly, horny goat weed. The story goes that a Chinese goat herder noticed extreme sexual activity amongst his goats after grazing on the herb, thus the name. Also known as Epimedium or Ying Yang Huo, the leaves from this plant contain flavonoids, polysaccharides, sterols and magnaflorine and have traditionally been used to treat fatigue and boost sex drive. |
Teens and others regularly use supplements containing caffeine and amphetamines to increase alertness and aggressiveness on the field. Cold remedies like Sudafed® and decongestants like AcuTrim®, which is also used as an appetite suppressant, contain stimulants that boost physical performance. They can also cause heart palpitations, weight loss, hypertension, hallucinations and convulsions.20
The athletic field isn't the only place where people are looking to improve performance. |
In 1999, 37-year-old Anne Marie Capati suffered a fatal stroke while working out at her gym after her trainer recommended using supplements containing Ephedra to help get fast results. Although she told her trainer that she was on medication for hypertension, the trainer still encouraged her to purchase and use the product containing Ephedra, which has proven to be deadly for people with high blood pressure. Yet, she wasn't warned of the danger.22 The sad thing is that if she had been a bit more patient with her exercise regimen and less focused on a quick fix, she might still be alive today. |

Though oral magnesium supplements will help the huge majority of people, tough cases or people with specific health challenges may need magnesium intravenously. According to my friend Alan Gaby, M.D., an icon of integrative medicine, "approximately 50 percent of patients with chronic fatigue syndrome or fibromyalgia show considerable improvement after receiving several intravenous injections of a combination of magnesium, calcium, B vitamins, and vitamin C. |
You may use pumpkin extract in combination with saw palmetto in supplements for prostate health.
Although the research on zinc for BPH is spotty, most complementary and holistic health practitioners recommend it. Zinc is absolutely essential to prostate health. Prostatic secretions contain a high concentration of zinc. |
In one study, the number of tender points on the body decreased after using SAMe as did scores on two rating scales of depression.
Selenium
IF I WERE stuck on a desert island with only six supplements, I'd definitely want one of them to be selenium. This little trace mineral has more uses than you can shake a stick at. It's a powerful antioxidant, it's helpful for getting rid of toxic metals in the system, it's an antiviral agent, and it's shown the ability to protect against cancer. What's not to like? |
Many high-quality multiple supplements contain this much, or you can take it as a stand-alone pill. The very best food source is Brazil nuts, which are high in calories but a selenium bonanza. Canned clams, oysters, and tuna are also good sources, as are beef and lamb. Many areas of the world, including the m i/>

Numerous studies show that regular use of about 1,000 mg of vitamin C supplements can slightly reduce the symptoms of colds and shorten the length of the illness, albeit modestly.
Many studies have shown that taking vitamin C along with zinc will shorten the duration of respiratory tract infections like pneumonia. And a study of marathoners published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition showed that competitors taking 600 mg of vitamin C for twenty-one days prior to the race had significantly fewer cold symptoms within two weeks of completing it. |

Several past cluster outbreaks of autoimmune disease still haunt scientists because of the rapid and insidious way in which thousands of individuals were struck ill with autoimmune reactions seemingly overnight, not from contact with unseen chemicals but from impurities in the processed food products, drugs, and supplements they consumed.
In May 1981, for instance, food product salesmen in Spain sold a rapeseed oil to stores that, unbeknownst to them, contained trace ingredients derived from an oil diverted from industrial use. |

These harmful substances are trapped within the body until you remove them with special detoxifying supplements. Acupuncture can also be used to assist and open the body's elimination pathways. Moxibustion appears to be especially beneficial in this regard, as the mild heat expands the skin's pores to facilitate toxin release via natural perspiration. Alternately, the introduction of a mild electrical current through the meridians can likewise work to remove "obstructions" from neural messaging routes. |

Niacin supplements are recommended as a precaution.
Dr Roger Williams, the great biochemist who discovered both folic and pantothenic acids, has commented, "every kind of essential nutrient comes into play in the promotion and prolongation of healthy life." Credit for longevity must also be given to other factors, including genes. But our 'longevity genes' function best when the body is provided with vitamin B-3 (nicotinic acid and or nicotinamide or nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide), as well as anti-oxidant vitamins and minerals, and protected from toxic metals and xenobiotic chemicals. |
Accumulation of high amounts of free zinc leads to the loss of NAD. supplements of vitamin B-3 increase NAD levels.
Atrial Fibrillation
In combination with folic acid, niacin has been shown to be therapeutic against atrial fibrillation, as seen among several patients in Dr Hoffer's care. The first case was a physician, age 70, who had been on nicotinic acid for many years, 3 to 6 g daily. On this dose, he developed lymphedema in the left leg. In an effort to deal with this problem, he discontinued his nicotinic acid. |
All patients with diseases that respond to supplements of vitamin B-3 are suffering from subclinical pellagra. The main difference between classical pellagra and subclinical pellagra is that subclinical pellagrins do not have the skin lesions typical of classical pellagrins. While small doses of vitamin B-3 are effective in treating non-chronic pellagra, a vitamin B-3 deficiency disorder, much larger doses are needed to treat chronic pellagra, a vitamin dependency disease. |
Vitamin C and some of the other B vitamins need to be taken as supplements, if necessary, as well as the omega-3 essential fatty acids. In orthomolecular medicine, there are no one-nutrient, one-disease treatments.
Clinical experience during the past 40 years has shown that niacin works best when it is given to members of Alcoholics Anonymous or patients otherwise motivated to stop drinking. To gain the full benefit of this vitamin, patients must be sober. For most of them, it removes the severe tension, agitation, and insomnia many still suffer even though they are abstinent. |
Cats have more or less lost the ability to synthesize niacin and most get pre-formed niacin supplements in their diets. Cats eating niacin-deficient diets develop "black tongue" hemorrhagic diarrhea, anemia, and reddening and ulceration of the mucous membranes of the tongue and mouth. If this inadequacy is not corrected, emaciation and death eventually occur. Humans face similar diseases if their diets are vitamin B-3 deficient.
Vitamins-as-Prevention
How did the modern diet become so deficient in certain nutrients that we can no longer scavenge adequate amounts? |

They'd come sometimes with a bag of 20 supplements. They'd show me all of these supplements. These are just the ones that we're honest about. I knew there were a whole lot that they weren't even telling me.
Mike: You got curious then?
Goodman: They'd ask me these questions, and eventually I said, "It's time for me to learn about it." I did a whole lot of research, and as I started to research I found that there really is something to so many of these naturopathic or natural ingredients. Why not make my own formula? |

In terms of nutritional supplements, the best "cleaning" supplements that can reduce your body odor are chlorella and parsley. The culinary spice cilantro also does a great job. Chlorophyll works wonders for cleaning your blood of toxins. But none of these can completely counteract the metabolic byproducts of consuming animal products.
I've even found that whey protein, including the clean, organic whey proteins, still result in "dirty" metabolic processes that produce odor. Brown rice protein, however, is clean. (I recommend the Nutribiotic brand. |

Currently, this site is sparse, but we are working on adding new supplements as quickly as we can. In time, we plan to list actual recommended products in this database as well.
All of these reference sites are hyperlinked to each other where appropriate. So you can click around and explore all the healing properties of foods, herbs, nutrients and supplements, or you can look up a particular health condition (like "depression") and see what's good for that.

The healthy people are the ones visiting health food stores, which sell natural health products and supplements. Through this simple observation experiment, we can see for ourselves that conventional medicine doesn't make people healthy. Or, at the very least, we can say that the consumption of prescription drugs is strongly correlated with states of disease, while the consumption of health food store products (natural groceries, organic produce and nutritional supplements) is strongly correlated with the absence of disease. |

"As a child, I had only one bowel movement per week. Therefore, I have struggled with constipation since childhood. In the beginning I went to medical doctors, but to no avail. In my twenties I still couldn't even go to the bathroom taking 8 prescription pills per night. When I was 32,1 was introduced by my chiropractor to healthy alternatives. I am eternally grateful for this. |
