Hormone Deception

For example, if you take a round of antibiotics without rebuilding the intestinal milieu with friendly bacteria (by taking acidophilus supplements or cultured foods with added acidophilus), you can wipe out this beneficial metabolizing effect for months. One benefit of phytoestrogens is they can protect us from excessive estrogenic estrogen. They do this by stimulating the liver to produce the hormone-binding proteins (shbg) in our blood that prevent too much estrogen and some estrogenic substances from attaching to receptor sites. On the other hand, according to Dr.

We need to consume LA and ALA, in food or supplements, because our bodies cannot manufacture them. When you consume LA, the body converts it to gamma linolenic acid (GLA), the form it takes before conversion to prostaglandins. GLA is found in no food other than human milk. Without GLA, we can't make prostaglandins. Various factors such as too much alcohol, saturated fat, cholesterol, sugar, or processed oils may block the LA-to-GLA pathways. So can diabetes, cancer, infections, and deficiencies of zinc, magnesium, niacin, B6, or vitamin C.

A nutritionist recommended that in addition to these supplements and diet that I take zinc, vitamin F and polly seeds. Lo and behold, a medical doctor checked me out and told me that I had no more prostate trouble!" Prostate Completely Relieved! Mr. N.R. reports: "When I heard that zinc helps the prostate problem I decided on taking a zinc tablet every day. I used to get up once or twice during the night, but since I am taking the zinc tablets, at the age of 72,1 can sleep eight to nine hours without ever getting out of bed. That's great!
I became interested in natural supplements 4 Vi years ago when my 90-year-old grandmother learned she was going blind from cataracts (dimming vision, red, weepy eyes and a noticeable film). She began taking vitamins A, B-2, C, D, and E, des-sicated liver, sunflower seed meal, organex and protein. At 94, the cataracts are gone and her mental and physical health have improved tremendously. (Take care of your body and your eyes will take care of themselves!)" * Mr. M.A. reports: "Three years ago my E.E.N.T. specialist told me he would have to remove cataracts from both eyes.
After considerable persuasion, she agreed to try the supplements which I suggested. We started her on vitamins A, C, B, and bone meal. This was two years ago and grandma's general health has improved considerably, and her eyesight has improved to the point where she sits and plays cards with us and has no more 'weeping' which had caused her so much discomfort." * One man writes: "My eyes were very painful... a film gathering over them." He remembered reading about the medicinal value of olive oil. This he applied to his eyes and eyelids, also beneath the eyes and under the eyelids.
This included safflower oil, sunflower seeds,2 vitamin E and a host of other supplements. "I was blind in my left eye, my coordination and speech were affected, and I was numb in various parts of my body. However, my sight has returned and all the symptoms have disappeared with no relapse. "I am still on my diet and safflower oil and my local physician tells me to keep on doing whatever I have been doing. I had been on medication for leg cramps but am no longer on it." Myasthenia Gravis Disappears!
I try to take a complete complement of vitamins both as natural foods and supplements, but the addition of large doses of vitamin C seems to be specific for washing the bad guys out of my system. These are the results of 20 years of practical experience." Bioflavanoids and Bursitis! "I'm a hairdresser," says Mrs. V.L., "and use my arms a lot. I had bursitis in both arms. Several times I had to have cortisone injected into my shoulders, which was very painful, but the bursitis was more painful. When I heard about vitamin P (bioflavanoids) for bursitis, I bought tablets containing 400 mg.

I suggest that my patients take four supplements, and in many cases they report great improvement. Vitamin C is, among other things, a natural antihistamine, and some allergic people seem to have a greater need for it than others. To see the best results, it needs to be taken in relatively large doses during the allergy season. Bioflavonoids, closely related to vitamin C, have been found to have anti-allergy effects. Bioflavonoids are most easily procured from the pulp, rind, and juice of oranges, lemons, and grapefruit.

Many patients are first stricken in the middle of the night with an aching, throbbing, and exquisitely painful big toe.
Whether you have glaucoma or are at risk of developing the disease, you may benefit greatly from nutrients and supplements. It's important to remember that glaucoma is not an inevitable effect of aging and heredity. In Nigeria, where glaucoma has reached epidemic proportions, researchers found that improved nutrition was a much better cure for glaucoma than drugs. In one study, a doctor treated a group of patients by giving them large doses of vitamins A, B, C, and E, as well as additional amounts of protein.
Calcium is also very important, and supplements may be helpful, particularly for pregnant women, women past menopause, and people on a restricted-calorie or low-fat diet. Take 1,200 mg. of calcium once a day (I recommend calcium citrate as it is the calcium form best absorbed by the body). Biotin, a water-soluble B vitamin, is necessary for healthy skin and hair. In fact, it's sometimes known as "the hair vitamin." It plays a role in nail health, too. You can buy it at a health food store or pharmacy. Iron deficiency is one of the most common causes for brittle nails.

Depending on how one wants to interpret the results, beta-carotene supplements are either harmful or have too little effect to bother about. Beta-carotene is a vitamin and not subject to the strict controls applied to the potentially more dangerous prescription drugs. But the issues and the results were the same. This leads to one of the central lessons of this chapter: Establishing the tangible health benefits of drugs protects the public from major dangers that no one anticipated or expected. And some doctors and patients still embrace drugs based on testimonials rather than evidence.
As a result, millions of bottles of beta-carotene supplements were sold and consumed. Millions of people increased their vegetable consumption to get the beta-carotene. In April of 1994, the first randomized clinical trial of beta-carotene was completed in Finland. Long after millions of people were taking beta-carotene, medical science was finally getting around to putting this interesting theory to the only valid scientific test—a randomized clinical trial. However, testing beta-carotene raised even more practical problems than testing Pravachol.
Beta-carotene supplements have caused increased risk of cancer.14 High doses of selenium or vitamin E may lead to serious health problems.15 With the top 50 prescription drugs, consumers get chemicals subject to FDA-mandated rigorous testing, established purity, scientifically documented benefits, and reasonably well-known risks at least over the short term. The top 50 are the most popular drugs, the fruits of the most advanced medical scientists, and, compared to herbal remedies, thoroughly tested. Then why do they remain so dangerous?

Women with this type of anemia may need to take supplements of B12, hydrochloric acid, and intrinsic factor. "Folic acid deficiency may also cause anemia. Folic acid becomes totally depleted in alcoholics. It is also commonly deficient among pregnant women because the fetus demands so much of it. Folic acid is vital for cell production in the growing fetus, and prevents birth defects, such as neural tube imperfections. This is why prenatal vitamins must contain this nutrient.

He concluded that cesium chloride was devoid of toxicity, as long as adequate diet and supplements were administered (13). In one experiment, however, cesium appeared very toxic to rats with liver cancer. About two-thirds died after just sixteen days. But when the mice were given alcohol (ethanol) at the same time the alcohol exerted a "protective action" that cut the death rate in half (14). 'References 1. Messiha F. Cesium: A bibliography update. Pharmacol Biochem Behav.l984;21:113-129. 2. Loo H and Cuche H. [Biochemical prospects in treatment of depressive illness].
Some of these test subjects were given supplements of 1250 milligrams of calcium carbonate daily. "Two to three months after supplementation had been started," they stated, "proliferation [of cancer-like cells] was significantly reduced...." In fact, their colon cells now resembled those of people who were at low risk for this type of cancer (5,6). Scientists at the Free University of Brussels also gave nine patients at high risk of colon cancer 1,500 milligrams of calcium for four to eight weeks.
Scientists also gave rats receiving such high-fat, cancer-causing diets, supplements of calcium and vitamin D. In one experiment, 40 female rats were divided into 5 groups and fed differing amounts of fat, vitamin D, phosphorus and calcium. By reducing the amount of calcium and vitamin D, scientists increased the incidence of breast cancer in these animals from 37 to 75 percent. The total number of tumors jumped from 4 to 16. In addition, the tumors in the low-supplement group were larger. Next, 126 rats were tested in a similar way.
Many doctors will tell you not to take supplements, since you get enough vitamins through your normal "balanced" diet to suffice. Thus, they would say all you need are the government's recommended daily allowances (RDAs). Others might say that taking a vitamin pill or two will "do no harm," with the implication that it will do no good, either. Others may prescribe doses hundreds, or even thousands, times greater than the government's suggestions. The reader will obviously have to make up his or her own mind, based on the information given in the book and other sources. Consult Dr. Kedar N.

Beating Cancer with Nutrition

Gerson's program included a diet that was high in raw unprocessed plant food, low in fat, included raw liver injections, thyroid extract, pancreatin (digestive aids), and supplements of minerals and vitamins, especially high doses of vitamin C. Dr. Gerson's therapy included many nutritional components that are now considered explainable and clinically effective. Too bad that Gerson was forced to leave the U.S. and bring his clinic to Mexico. Realize that we evolved on a "caveman" diet which was high in potassium from fresh plant food and low in sodium (pre-salt shaker era).
In a study with human rheumatoid arthritis patients being given methotrexate, folic acid supplements did not reduce the antiproliferative therapeutic value of methotrexate. 18 VITAMIN C. Tumor-bearing mice fed high doses of vitamin C (antioxidant) along with adriamycin (pro-oxidant) had a prolonged life and no reduction in the tumor killing capacity of adriamycin.19 Lung cancer patients who were provided antioxidant nutrients prior to, during, and after radiation and chemotherapy had enhanced tumor destruction and significantly longer life span.
While supplements are valuable, they cannot replace the fundamental importance of a wholesome diet. This chapter can make or break your cancer-fighting program. The food discussed in this chapter has been fine tuned over the years to be tasty, nutritious, inexpensive and easy to prepare. Our eating habits are all acquired. We base our current diet on what mother cooked when we were younger; what our society, ethnic and religious groups prefer; what is advertised in print and electronic media, and what is available in the local grocery store.
Albert Einstein, PhD The risk to benefit to cost ratio of nutrition supplements is heavily in favor of using them WHERE APPROPRIATE. Meaning, you need some professional guidance. Our health care system is so dominated by allopathic drugs, most of which have many harmful side effects, that the question is often asked: "If these nutrients are so helpful, then what is the risk of using them, especially at the higher doses recommended for cancer patients?" Here's your answer. WINDOW OF EFFICACY "First, do no harm.
Only a concerted effort of dietary regulation and proper supplements can produce healthy prostaglandins to suppress cancer. STEROID HORMONE ACTIVITY Certain cancers that are very dependent on testosterone (prostate cancer) or estrogen (for breast, ovarian and cervical cancer). These hormones are not only produced by the gonads (testosterone) and ovaries (estrogen), but also produced by fat cells. Meaning that, the more body fat a person has, the higher the likelihood of generating more tumor-enhancing hormones.

Those who took vitamin E supplements for more than two years also experienced a reduction in coronary disease risk.78 But remember, this is an observational study. Consider the B Vitamins Homocysteine, a derivative of the amino acid methionine found mainly in animal products, accumulates in the blood and has been linked to an increased risk of cardiovascular disease79' 80' 81 and stroke.82 Getting rid of it requires vitamin B12, B6, and folic acid. People deficient in any of these have higher homocysteine concentrations. Folic acid clearly lowers homocysteine in the blood.
