Further studies indicated that food supplements of yucca tend to inhibit the production of urease, and as a result, fecal and urine odors are reduced by up to 56 percent in dogs and 49 percent in cats. People who feed yucca to reduce odors usually aren't aware of the nutritional role it plays in this equation. Poor-quality proteins produce excess urea and larger, more offensive stools. But with yucca frequently in their diets, animals and poultry are given more balance to their gastrointestinal tracts so that excess fecal and urine odor cease to be an issue. |
These supplements have also stopped excessive shedding, improved their doggy odors and drippy eyes, and eliminated both dry and oil skins, eczema, and hot spots."
The Cat that Built an Entire Pet-Products Company
Some 12 years ago, Andi Brown's Maine coon cat, a male named Spot, developed a diseased condition that conventional veterinary care and prescription drugs or premium commercial foods couldn't correct. "It manifested itself," she told me by telephone recently, "as skin and coat disorders and eye discharges. He had a horrendous odor that would clear out Palm Harbor [Florida] down here. |

Price found that those who had lost their immunity because of poor nutrition were able to halt the process of dental cavities by reverting back to a natural diet or taking special supplements that were equivalent to the nutritional content of their indigenous diets. The results are noteworthy. For example, Weston Price found that by putting children back on a healthy diet, the epidemic of caries could be stopped in some of the indigenous cultures he studied. |

Nutritional Fortification for Healthy and Easy Deliveries
The best guarantee to having healthy pups or kittens safely born to their mothers lies not so much in particular nutritional supplements given well in advance but rather in good and nourishing food. That's where the real promise comes in, determining how strong or weak the newborns will be and how trouble-free or difficulty laden each birth is.
There are obviously many variables connected with a normal and healthy birth. In his classic work Dr. |

B12 per day, and that nonsmoking vegans may not need any external source of B12 in their diets or through supplements because their own friendly bacteria living in the nasopharynx, teeth, gums, and small intestine would produce enough B12.
6. Vitamin B12 is heat-sensitive but not entirely destroyed by cooking. Research shows that between 23.7% and 96.4% of B12 is destroyed by boiling or baking, depending on the food type and the length of heat processing. Boiling milk for two to five minutes decreases the active B12 amount by 30%. Another study of longer boiling time showed a 50% loss. |

Optimum levels for vitamin E will, he suggests, probably require supplements. Diplock claims that "the laboratory and epidemiological evidence is now so strong that it is essential to ensure that the population is adequately supplied with E, C and beta-carotene" [43].

Herbert suggests that vitamin C supplements should not be taken if the blood level of ferritin, an iron-binding protein, is over 120 [Xg/L. In contrast, other authorities state that iron is always safely bound to protein; so vitamin C in fact, as opposed to theory, never interacts with free iron to produce pro-oxidant effects in real life [14, 38, 45, 147]- Herbert refers to a submission paper made by M. Krikker to an FDA committee that mentions "several deaths in athletes due to this cause." I am not aware of any such interaction reported in any scientific paper. |
There are conflicting reports as to whether vitamin C supplements may induce or improve cataracts in elderly patients with diabetes. In most people, as we saw earlier, vitamin C appears to protect against cataracts and against diabetes. Elderly diabetics may prove an exception to this rule.
To avoid hemolysis, vitamin C should not be given intravenously to patients with a condition known as glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency [122]. Bendich and Langseth state that some previous anecdotes claiming the alleged toxicity of vitamin C have been exaggerated [12]. |
This worry does not seem to be justified in view of the fact that many hundreds of thousands of people have taken vitamin E supplements over the last decade without any reports of such complications. However, raising the level of intake of alpha-tocopherol (vitamin E) lowers the level of its close relative gamma-tocopherol. Gamma-tocopherol is more potent than alpha-tocopherol in detoxifying nitrogen dioxide (the potent oxidant in smog and cigarette smoke); thus, gamma-tocopherol should be an ingredient in any antioxidant program. |

Vitamin C supplements are readily available in the form of ascorbic acid tablets. You can also load up on vitamin C by increasing your intake of citrus fruits, especially oranges and limes. And when you do, be sure to eat some of the white pith that lines the rind. It's bitter, but it contains high levels of bioflavonoids, substances that can help reduce your cancer risk and increase the effects of vitamin C on your body.
Vitamin E
Vitamin C is a good antioxidant, but research at the Shute Institute in Canada has indicated that vitamin E is three times better. |
Women going through menopause can especially benefit from vitamin E supplements because estrogen, often taken to lessen the symptoms of menopause, can cause vitamin E deficiencies.
Wheat germ is one of the best natural sources of this important vitamin. Available in most health food stores and supermarkets (in the cereal aisle), wheat germ can be sprinkled on food, baked into breads and cakes, and even eaten like breakfast cereal with milk. Other natural sources of vitamin E are green vegetables, whole grains, eggs and soybeans. |
Iron supplements really can boost energy, especially in menstruating women who often lose as much as 10 to 15 mgs. of this mineral per day. Unfortunately, some of the best natural food sources of iron are organ meats (liver and kidneys), which can contain high levels of fats and contaminants. However, oats, peaches, raisins, molasses, beans and green leafy vegetables also provide needed iron — and extra fiber.
Copper
Copper helps your system absorb iron while forming hemoglobin to oxygenate the body. |
Besides supplements, there are many good food sources for B vitamins:

¦ B6 — baked potato, banana, chickpeas, prune juice
¦ B12 — steamed clams, mussels, oysters

And, if you take calcium supplements, honey can help your body to absorb the calcium 25 percent more quickly — great for strong bones and teeth.
Honey is much more than a healthy sweetener. For thousands of years, it has been used as a soothing, antibacterial salve for wounds, sores and skin ulcers. During wartime, Greek, Roman, Assyrian, Chinese and Egyptian doctors took pots of honey with them to the battlefield to spread on wounded warriors' injuries. It turns out these ancient healers were right. Research shows that honey stops bacteria by drawing water out of damaged tissue. |

Train yourself to be more of a label reader and spend more time scanning the finely printed list of ingredients before purchasing your next pet foods. Add supplements to provide the necessary vitamins and minerals that are lacking in our nutritionally depleted soils.
One of the best measures of relief to pets suffering from skin problems is to bathe them with a nonirritating soap once or twice a week (obviously less for cats, who despise getting wet). Consider brewing up a batch of green tea and letting it cool. Then strain it and sponge those afflicted parts of your pet with it. |

The run of the mill "brittle-nail syndrome" can often be treated successfully by using a combination of supplements and nail care.
Fungal infections should be treated by a physician or natural healer; they are persistent infections that can cause great discomfort and may spread to other nails. Oral antifungal drugs are typically prescribed to treat the infection, but they are not without side effects, including nausea and upset stomach. In many cases, some tried and true herbal remedies are potent fungus fighters. |
A change in diet and the addition of a few supplements may be of great help in alleviating their symptoms.

Chromium—This essential trace element helps the body to utilize insulin and thus stabilize blood-sugar levels. Researchers tested eight women who took 200 meg. of chromium daily for three months. All had their hypoglycemic symptoms eased, that is, they no longer experienced those sugar highs and lows. In diabetics who have hyperglycemia (too much sugar in the blood), chromium can lower both blood-sugar levels and the need for insulin. |
One double-blind study showed that 57 percent of hypoglycemic subjects who took daily magnesium supplements felt better, compared to 25 percent of those who were given a placebo.
Glutathione—This combination of three amino acids, glutamate, glycine, and cysteine is a potent antioxidant that deactivates free radicals and has been used to help in the treatment of diabetes and hypoglycemia.

In a second report, improvement in morale and decreased absenteeism among clerical workers were observed when employees were given supplements of bananas. Workers who were given these natural fruit snacks were more cheerful and attentive and less tired on the job than those who didn't receive any bananas. The last experiment was conducted at a retirement home. 117 residents received a ripe banana each day for periods of 16-30 days. After awhile these residents no longer suffered any digestive disorders. Banana is also good to offset insulin shock in diabetics. |
A more recent study showed that when 19 healthy male hospital staff volunteers consumed finely powdered cabbage supplements with their regular diets over a three-week period, their stool weights increased by 20%. This can be attributed to the water-holding capacity of cabbage fiber. About 5 cups of shredded cabbage, raw or cooked, is suggested twice a week in the diet for improved colon function. |
She had her son take 4 capsules three times daily on an empty stomach with additional supplements of calcium, horsetail and zinc in unspecified amounts. Each time the boy took them, he would drink a full 8 oz. glass of papaya juice made from liquid concentrate. He also refrained from strenuous exercising as well. According to what the mother told me, her son's hernia healed within 2 1/2 months and a later physical examination and further X-rays by their family doctor confirmed this to, indeed, have been the case.

If all women of childbearing age consumed sufficient folic acid (either through diet or supplements), 50 percent to 70 percent of birth defects of the brain and spinal cord could be prevented, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Folic acid is critical in the first four to six weeks of pregnancy when the neural tube is formed. This means adequate diet or supplement use should begin before pregnancy occurs. |
The ability of carbohydrate supplements to prolong endurance during exercising is related to preventing fatigue in a physiological sense in both body and mind. The effect of carbohydrate in increasing the tryptophan ratio in blood is considered to be a possible mechanism.
