Paola of the Forsyth Dental Center in Boston also found that fluoride supplements were the major cause of dental fluorosis among children living in nonfluori-dated areas "particularly if ingested in tablet form prior to three years of age." More recent research from the Royal Dental College in Aarhus, Denmark indicates that dental fluorosis can occur among children exposed to fluoride much later in life than had previously been expected, i.e. up to 7.5 to 8.5 years of age.
Dental fluorosis is more than just a cosmetic problem for these children. |
It bears repeating that this visible distortion in the tooth enamel is obvious in 20-35% of children who either live in fluoridated areas or live in nonfluoridated areas but are given fluoride supplements.
According to an article published in 1952 by Drs. Maury Massler and Isaac Schour, children with a lower nutritional status experience an even higher incidence of dental fluorosis after drinking water containing fluoride levels of about 1 part per million. The following table reports that dental fluorosis occurs in 60% of the children of Quarto, Italy exposed to 1. |
The National Academy of Sciences outlined the tests which a substance or element must pass before being called an essential nutrient: "First, it should be possible to demonstrate repeated and significant responses in growth or health to dietary supplements of the element and to the element alone; second, it should be possible to develop a deficiency state on diets that lack the element but that are otherwise adequate and satisfactory. Such diets should contain all other known dietary essentials in adequate amounts. |
WARNING: While the visible symptoms of dental fluorosis occur in only 20-35% of those consuming fluoride through fluoridated drinking water or through fluoride supplements during childhood, premature loss of teeth can still be expected to occur due to damage caused during tooth development even in those who do not exhibit dental fluorosis.

That's why you'll find a host of supplements in stores and on the Internet offering an easy supply of phytochemicals.
But there is very little evidence these plant chemicals do the same job once you take them out of their original "package"— possibly because the chemicals need other parts of the plant to work properly. As always, the best way for you to get the most benefit from phytochemicals is to eat whole foods. |
Just one caution — if you're taking blood thinners, check with your doctor before taking supplements since omega-3 also has blood-thinning effects.
Just as important to your fatty acid balance are the things not to eat, namely soybean and corn oils, both much too high in omega-6 and too low in omega-3. Eliminate all deep-fried foods and margarine and salad dressings that contain corn or soybean oil. |
In many other countries, you'll find powdered camu-camu in natural vitamin C supplements. The fruit is getting so popular that farmers are setting up camu-camu fields in the middle of the jungle. You'll probably be seeing and hearing more and more about them in the future.
Tunes up your immune system. Eating foods high in vitamin C may not cure the common cold, but it can help strengthen your defenses against pesky bacteria and viruses. Research shows vitamin C encourages your immune system to be all that it can be against the bad guys — just like the Army. |

She has found that supplements of fish oil, equal to the amount Japanese women commonly eat in fish, suppressed biological signs of developing breast cancer in women at highest risk for the disease. Further, a Canadian survey of thirty-two countries showed that the incidence and death rate from breast cancer is lower in countries, such as Japan, where women eat the most fish.
Most dramatically, fish oil may actually be able to interfere with the progression of cancer, once it occurs. |

The statute specifically stated that the FDA could recommend a different standard and approval procedure for supplements. In its restrictive interpretation of NLEA, the FDA has used arbitrary powers Congress never intended for it to have, enforcing laws that have not been legislated.
When the FDA began implementing NLEA in December of 1991, they only approved one nutritional claim—calcium to prevent osteoporosis in White and Asian Women. To date, only one other claim—folic acid for the prevention of birth defects—has been approved (and only after enormous public pressure on the FDA). |

Take Vitamin B-6 supplements. This, too, will keep your serotonin levels high enough to combat carbohydrate cravings. About 100 mg of B-6 per day is considered an optimum dosage for serotonin maintenance, and is considered a safe dosage by many experts (although you may want to check with your doctor first).5
Choose low-fat carbohydrates. Joseph Piscatella, author of Controlling Your Fat Tooth, knows the importance of this advice from personal experience. |

However, the most important message is that chemically synthesized supplements are no substitute for real food complexes. Foods contain an intricate, interconnected network of components of known and unknown nutrients, which work together for the effectiveness or formation of the body. Chemically isolated and synthetic vitamins are devoid of all their synergists. The body treats natural and synthetic vitamins differently. |
It is important to remember that supplements of coenzyme Q10 are synthesized as pure refined manufactured compound by fermentation. I recommend and use the oil-soluble capsules, as they have been shown to be three times as effective as the powdered capsule form. In reality, this is actually more of a drug than a food and is certainly no substitute for a raw food diet. CoQ10 is a supplement to a good diet, not a substitute.
For pets with heart disease, I prescribe coenzyme Q]0 along with various herbs and an important supplement from Standard Process Labs called Cardio-Plus. |
Glandular supplements could be used, including lung, adrenal, and thymus substances. In short, all the vitamins, minerals, trace elements, amino acids, fatty acids, enzymes, and unknown nutrients in raw, live, unprocessed foods are needed for optimum health.
At Highlands Veterinary Hospital, a number of different modalities—acupuncture, nutrition, biological response modifiers, and herbs—are all used to cure asthmatic patients. |
Ginkgo
Ginkgo has become one of the most popular dietary supplements in the world. There are now more than 1,000 published studies about ginkgo, some that indicate that this potent flavonoid may have antiaging effects throughout the body. It has powerful therapeutic properties for the treatment of a number of serious medical conditions, including cognitive dysfunction, asthma, allergies, canine vestibular syndrome, cerebrovascular insufficiency, and circulatory disorders. Ginkgo has been used in traditional Chinese medicine for thousands of years. |

When people, young and old, begin to consume a high quality-diet and an intelligent combination of nutritional supplements, the numbers of infections invariably plummet.
After bowel-unfriendly foods and drugs are reduced and eliminated, a nutritional regimen to regain and optimize bowel functioning should be instituted. In addition to the daily basic vitamin, and mineral, nutrient intake, additional nutrients are beneficial. L-glutamine, deglycyrrhized licorice (DGL), and N-acetyl-glucosamine (NAG) particularly benefit the bowel lining cells. |
After one study in a juvenile correction facility in Oklahoma, the state employees chipped in to buy the children supplements while the bureaucracy contemplated the matter.
Improvements in learning disabilities.'0 Academic improvements were noted within weeks to months and continued for four years. Some children improved their reading comprehension by three to five years within the first year of supplementation. Those who discontinued supplementation showed a decline in academic performance in the first year and had lower grades in the following year. |
We list examples of the supplements used in appendix F.) Among the findings are the following:
Increased IQ.8 While the overall gain in the supplemented group is usually modest (two to four points), subgroups as large as one-third of the supplemented group have shown increases of ten points. Ten points on an IQ test may be the difference between mild mental retardation and a normal IQ, or between a normal IQ and an IQ in the upper five percent of the population. |

In 1993 the FDA continued its efforts to restrict health claims, raiding thirty-five health food facilities in seven states. Clearly, the FDA is operating as the right arm of the pharmaceutical industry, for whom natural remedies and treatments are a significant threat.
THE AMERICAN MEDICAL MONOPOLY
Most of the orthodox medical profession oppose the manufacture, sale, and distribution of vitamins and minerals as food or food supplements. |
CoQIO is especially beneficial for heart problems, as supplements have been shown to significantly increase the recovery time of a person suffering from heart disease. The treatment of choice in Japan, CoQIO is a widely prescribed heart medication in Sweden, Italy, Denmark, and Canada. More than one thousand research papers have been published on it worldwide, and six international symposia have documented its safety, efficacy, and lack of side effects. |

Some people take selenium supplements, but I don't recommend this because selenium is very powerful. A little too much and it becomes poisonous. In the early 1960s, the weathering of high-selenium rock formations in part of China caused an unusual selenium load in the soil. Huge quantities of the mineral ended up in cultivated plants. The average resident got about five milligrams (five thousand micrograms) of selenium per day. The result was an epidemic of hair loss, fingernail changes, and nerve symptoms. |

The FDA has prevented Nutricology from selling the book Miracle Cure: Organic Germanium by Kasuhiko Asai, since Nutricology markets germanium supplements. In August of 1994, New York's Ellis Island Immigrant Museum closed part of a book exhibit on immigrant health traditions after receiving criticism about its alternative health care display. Victor Herbert, M.D., orthodox medicine's favorite spokesman, wrote a letter to the superintendent of the Statue of Liberty National Monument and Ellis Island, complaining that alternative health care books promoted health fraud. |

E complex is a lot more than alpha-tocopherol, the so-called vitamin E in supplements. It is interesting how nutrients in nature interact with each other. As if by design, there appears to be a relationship between the concentration of linoleic acid in various plant oils and the concentration of tocopherols. The potent antioxidant effects of the tocopherol prevent its oxidation of the relatively unstable fatty acids. Tocopherols protect the linoleic acid and other oil constituents making up the vitamin E complex. |

If you can't eat enough cold-water fish, or don't like it, take commercially available omega-3 supplements (but not if you're hypertensive or have a bleeding disorder). The usual dosage is 3 grams daily, but diabetics should have no more than 2 grams. It goes without saying that the omega-3-rich foods are not for you if you're allergic to fish! The beneficial effects offish have also been shown to benefit the lungs in other ways. |
The dosage range is usually at least three capsules with each meal and often more, depending on how badly the pancreas has been damaged;
(3) take daily vitamin supplements, especially A (1,000 RE), D (400 IU), and E (400 IU), the fat-soluble ones that are lost in the diarrhea. I also recommend 1,000 micrograms of vitamin B12 for good measure.
Heavy drinking over the long term also seriously hurts the brain. We used to think that the personality changes and memory loss in some alcoholics was due to damage or destruction of brain cells. That's apparently not the case. |
Most people have enough vitamin E in their normal diet, and supplements are not warranted at this time for cataract prevention.
Finally, here is yet another area in which tobacco rears its ugly head. Cigarette smoking speeds up the formation of cataracts in both men and women, perhaps because it generates lots of free radicals that can damage the lens. So if you haven't quit yet, this is another good reason to do so.
In summary, the relationship between antioxidants and cataracts is still somewhat controversial. Some trials are currently under way and will hopefully clarify the issue. |
That means more orange or grapefruit juice—or supplements. Page 105 lists some common sources of vitamin C and how much they contain per serving.
Vitamin A was also found to be protective against cataracts in the Nurses' Study. The richest food sources of "preformed" vitamin A are liver, milk, eggs, and liver oils from cod and halibut. But vitamin A has some five hundred different natural constituents called caroten-oids, and it's not clear which among them best prevents cataracts. |
Vitamin A toxicity, with its skin, intestinal, and neurological complications, can be very disabling, but unless you're an Eskimo with a passion for polar bear liver, you'll develop it only from taking too many supplements.
CANCER OF THE COLON AND RECTUM: WHERE DIET REALLY WORKS
I am convinced that a diet high in fiber and low in saturated fat reduces the risk of cancer of the large bowel. This malignancy is the second biggest cancer killer in men (after lung cancer), and the third in women. |

As we age we stop producing lipoic acid in sufficient quantities, which is why we need to take supplements.
Dr. Lester Packer, a world-renowned scientist who heads the Membrane Bioenergetics Group at the University of California at Berkeley, is the world's leading authority on lipoic acid and antioxidants. Dr. Packer discovered that unlike other antioxidants that have a specific job in the body, lipoic acid can serve as a "free agent" that can pinch-hit for the other antioxidants when they are in short supply. |
Possible Benefits
Improves absorption of supplements.
The Right Amount
Take three 5-mg. capsules daily.
Caution
If you are taking any medication, I don't recommend that you use pepperine, since there is a risk that it may result in higher-than-normal blood levels of the drug.
Phosphatidylcholine (PC)
Facts
Phosphatidylcholine iP(!i, a naturally occurring phospholipid that is found in cell membranes, is the state of-the art supplement to reinvigorate a damaged liver. |
There is good evidence that taking phosphatidylserine supplements can help restore brain power. One recent study reported in the journal Neurology involved a group of 149 healthy men and women from 50 to 70 years of age who were diagnosed with normal age-associated memory problems. Participants were given 100 mg of PS daily for 12 weeks, or a placebo. Those taking the PS noted significant improvements in their ability to recall telephone numbers, names, and faces; memorize paragraphs; find misplaced objects; and concentrate while performing tasks. |
