One study found that DHEA supplements increased older women's sense of well-being—measured by soundness of sleep, joint comfort, mobility, and ability to cope—by an astonishing 84 percent. Men's sense of well-being increased by 67 percent. In order to achieve the benefits of ginseng, Dr. Warnock recommends taking it on an ongoing basis. Take it for 6 weeks, then take a break for 2 weeks. Do this in a constant cycle to prevent your body from adapting to the ginseng and causing the herb to lose its effectiveness. Both the Asian and Siberian varieties stimulate the production of DHEA, he says.

Extracts identical to these preparations are available in the United States as food supplements. The cul-turing, harvesting, and extracting techniques have been thoroughly standardized and require careful control. Ginkgo biloba extract is standardized to contain 24 percent flavonoid glycosides, as these molecules represent a convenient analytical reference group. Although the flavonoid glycosides play a major role in the pharmacological activity of GBE, other components are also important.

His fame was so widespread for successfully treating patients with natural foods and supplements — even for so-called incurable diseases — that sick people came to him from almost every continent. Dr. Khoe referred to garlic as "God's gift to a toxic world" and stated that he used liquid aged garlic in his offices "for detoxification - especially for patients living in areas with much pollution and smog. Aside from treating patients with it for high blood pressure, cholesterol and triglycerides, as well as acute colds, diarrhea, and diabetes, Dr.
It is time that doctors face up to the evidence that most modern diets are deficient in vitally needed nutrients and that patients would rather take safe preventive measures - natural foods and food supplements - in order to remain or to become non-patients. In the past 25 years, more than 1,300 studies have demonstrated garlic's incredible ability to build superb health and to manage many illnesses. Modern medicine is based on curing illness. Alternative medicine is based on preventing illness and promoting wellness and longevity. That's what this book is all about.
Energizing Fatigue Inasmuch as a patient's fatigue is usually attributed to hypothyroidism (low thyroid function); hypoglycemia (low blood sugar); overwork; prolonged sleeplessness, one of the anemias; mononucleosis, or chronic fatigue syndrome - to name the principle causes — most doctors prescribe or recommend medicines or nutrient supplements specific for these disorders. One of the anti-fatigue remedies rarely considered is garlic, although a historic precedent for it dates back to ancient Egypt and Rome.
These nutritional supplements would be safer than any other drugs tested to date on sickle cell patients." A pilot clinical trial by the Onishi research group to determine if aged garlic and other antioxidants could reduce the amount of dense cell formation showed promise. Over six months, these biochemists demonstrated that 6 grams of aged garlic extract - a gram is l/28lh of an ounce -4 to 6 grams of vitamin C and 800 to 12001.U. of vitamin E daily may be beneficial to sickle cell patients in that it improved blood values and showed a trend toward reducing painful crises.
Here are excerpts from her message as to how she had overcome her Candida albicans problem: "Kyolic, diet and various vitamins and herbal supplements that I found in your book all helped. I believe I didn 't have to use Kyolic after the third bottle. My real breakthrough came after I eliminated sugar and other carbohydrates. I was weak with what I thought was the flu and noticed that I could breathe through my nose, that my body pain was gone, and the burning sensation in my lower back had completely disappeared. "The quote in your book from Dr. Glasser was very important to me.
F, Michigan supplementing him with two teaspoons of Kyolic with B vitamin supplements, 1/2 teaspoon of Kyo-Green and one Kyo-Dophilus capsule daily. After just a few weeks, we noticed remarkable changes in his attention and interaction. Prone to frequent colds, nasal congestion and ear infections, Alex was delivered from all of this, to our amazement. However, gingivitis developed, and we rubbed his gums with Kyolic twice daily, and that soon disappeared. Alex now is eleven years old. Although he still can't talk, he works three computers, dresses himself and seems normal.

Low levels of vitamin C are associated both with high blood pressure and with increased risk of heart attack; however, one large study concluded that, once vitamin C intake is adequate, high-dose supplements will probably not be associated with lessened risk. Other trials have shown that vitamin C can dilate the arteries and help blood-flow in heart patients. Research to date seems to show that it is better to get your antioxidants as part of your natural diet rather than as supplements, particularly in the case of beta-carotene. The antioxidant minerals and phytochemicals are discussed in more detail in the pages ahead. ¦ Vitamin K The last of the fat-soluble vitamins, vitamin K is essential for the normal clotting of blood. It is widespread in food in small quantities, but best sources are dark green leafy vegetables and the skins of fruit and vegetables.

This book outlines and describes the application of conventional medicine, dietary modifications, nutritional supplements, herbal medicine, homeopathy, and acupressure. We believe that understanding and integrating the full range of health-care options offers the most complete and responsible way to a healthy life. We hope to foster an awareness that natural healing therapies and conventional medical treatment, two apparently divergent approaches, can—and should—work together.

In contrast, in the United States, extracts, which are identical to those approved in Germany and France, are available as "food supplements." No medicinal claims are allowed for most herbal products because the FDA requires the same standard of absolute proof as is required for new synthetic drugs. The FDA has rejected the idea of establishing an independent Expert Advisory Panel for the development of monographs similar to Germany's Commission E monographs, as well as other ideas to create a suitable framework for the marketing of herbal products in the United States.

You can find green tea as supplements, but drinking tea made from the unfermented dried leaves makes more sense. You can find them loose or in tea bags in Japanese or Asian food stores, and they're becoming more available in health food stores and grocery stores. The key is to make a medicinal-strength tea. "If you use a tea bag, steep it for a good 10 minutes," says Emily Kane, N.D,. a naturopathic doctor and licensed acupuncturist in Juneau, Alaska. "You should definitely get that little backbite from the tannins. That's how you know it's strong enough.
Make sure you take fiber supplements with lots of water, she warns. If you don't, you could end up even more constipated than before. It's also important to eat lots of fruits and vegetables and drink plenty of water every day. Cause: There are as many causes of excess flatulence as there are unwanted outbursts over the course of a day. Some medications may cause it, and so may food allergies or lactose intolerance. Perhaps you swallow too much air when you eat, and it passes out the other end.

Finally — and this approach stems from the experiences that prompted Rea to tackle the problem of MCS in the first place — the center sometimes recommends surgery. Not to remove body parts, but rather to rid the body of internal sources of contamination: prostheses, synthetic mesh used to reinforce incisions, even silver/mercury tooth fillings.

Anemia Drugs Iron supplements, when taken with thyroid medications result in a decreased gastrointestinal absorption of the thyroid medications.15 Taking both of these substances together can lead to less thyroid hormone available for the body and thus exacerbate hypothyroid symptoms. H. Cytokines (Interferon-a and Interleukin-2) Interferon-ot is used for the treatment of hepatitis and for various malignancies. Interferon-a has been associated with hypothyroidism as well as hyperthyroidism. Interleukin-2 is used for the treatment of various malignancies.
This can include the removal of mercury fdlings, taking supplements and sauna therapies. Detoxification of heavy metals was explained in Chapter 8. Treating the Pathogens My experience has shown a large percentage of patients with chronic illnesses, including thyroid disorders, have evidence of infections playing a role in their illness. These pathogens must be appropriately diagnosed and treated. The infectious agents are one of many underlying causes of the illness.

Take 1,000 milligrams daily in divided doses, or less if it produces diarrhea, but be sure to talk to your doctor before taking supplements. Dr. Milowe also recommends enriching your diet with more omega-3 fatty acids, which are heart-healthy nutrients with an anti-hypertensive effect. You can get them from fish, shellfish, and flaxseed. What it all comes down to is that drugs may lower your high blood pressure quickly, but a healthier lifestyle—helped along by the following herbs—may do it permanently. Garlic Take four to six 600-milligram capsules or tablets a day in divided doses.
What's more, these supplements should be high in antioxidants, chemicals that are important for nourishing the eyes and eliminating harmful substances that can cause damage. A good diet for the eyes, Dr. Laule adds, includes lots of green, leafy vegetables, such as spinach, turnip greens, chard, kale, ro-maine lettuce, cilantro, and parsley. These provide antioxidant substances called lutein and zeaxanthin, which have been shown to be particularly effective at warding off macular degeneration. Wearing good sunglasses that filter out ultraviolet sunlight also protects your eyes.
Although we get many of these cell protectors from foods and supplements, research shows that your skin can also benefit from using them externally to counteract the damage caused by sun exposure and environmental factors. Regularly slathering on an antioxidant-rich sunscreen will not only prevent any further damage, it will also allow the skin to heal and repair itself. Changes in your skin's elastic layer start long before the fine lines and crinkles start to show. Collagen—the glue that holds your skin together—decreases by about 1 percent a year during adulthood.

The daily consumption of raw garlic or odorless supplements can eliminate most strains of parasites, and can be an effective combatant of fungi, bacteria, and viruses as well. Garlic can also be administered in juices and in colonics. Goldenseal, which contains an active ingredient known as berberine, is another herb with antiparasitic potential, and can be especially useful in defeating the Giardia lamblia amoeba. Unfortunately, goldenseal, unlike garlic, cannot be relied upon for more than a month at a time.
The antispasmodic qualities of magnesium can reduce cramps and lower back pain associated with the menstrual cycle, and can also help eliminate sugar cravings. supplements of vitamin E (200 to 600 IU) can aid in the reduction of breast tenderness and are beneficial in treating cramps and fibrocystic breasts, which have a tendency to enlarge prior to menstruation. The mineral zinc (30 to 60 mg) can be a useful tool in minimizing depression and irritability.

One study showed that women with low levels of selenium had increased risk of miscarriage; and other tests show that selenium levels are often low in people with rheumatoid arthritis and that selenium supplements may reduce pain and inflammation. Yet another recent study has linked low selenium in HIV sufferers with a twenty-fold increased risk of dying of HIV-related causes. Because selenuim comes from plants or plant-eating animals, the amount in the food that we eat relates to the amount in the soilthe US dietary intake levels are high so at present there is no RDI.

Vitamin/ mineral supplements are generally harmless and often therapeutic, but excessive intakes of some nutrients can cause neurological symptoms. I once diagnosed a young girl whose seizures, behavior problems, bone pain, and dry and kinky hair were caused by excessive intake of vitamin A. Overdoses of vitamin D can also cause "mental" symptoms such as fatigue, despondency, and even psychosis.

What's more, the second study showed that the supplements might actually be harmful. In that study, the incidence of both cancer and heart disease was higher in the participants taking the supplement than in those taking the placebo. For those who only glanced at the headlines or heard the word "ineffective" shouted from a news broadcast, the study results might have seemed to damn beta carotene. In fact, however, what was being damned was not beta carotene, the natural substance, but beta carotene, the "magic" pill, the synthetic supplement. The difference is important.

There are many acceptable commercial electrolyte supplements on the market, but if you so desire you can make your own version at home. I have my own recipe, provided in the adjacent box for your convenience. I recommend a short period of water or juice fasting for 1 or 2 days, followed by a gradual reintroduction of mild foods that are very easy to digest. Choose foods such as rice, cooked carrots, miso soup, tapioca, potato broth, potassium broth (made with carrot, spinach, celery, and parsley), applesauce, and black or green tea.
Alternatively, use borage, evening primrose, or flax as supplements. Low-quality oils increase inflammation and mucus. Fruits: Insufficient intake of fruits increases inflammation. Eat several servings of fresh fruit each day, especially those with dark colors, such as blueberries, grapes, strawberries, and watermelon. Vegetables: Insufficient intake of vegetables increases inflammation. Eat large quantities, preferably cooked or boiled.
For example, there is a higher incidence of the disease in women taking synthetic estrogen supplements. Patients should avoid prolonged sun exposure as it often exacerbates the disease. Scleroderma is a CTD characterized by progressive thickening and stiffening of the skin, followed by atrophy and changes in pigmentation. It can progress to the internal organs, eventually leading to death. Treatment of CTDs The high level of inflammation and tissue destruction that occurs with CTDs points clearly to a weakness in the body's detoxification systems.
