Replenish your stores until your diet is solid (with supplements e.g., a multivitamin).
4. Let your symptoms tell you what you're low in.
(Use a simple reference.)
5. If you're still confused, then see a nutritionist (to help you learn to do it yourself).
FIGURE 56
After all this (see Fig. 56), if you're still hopelessly confused, see a nutritionist. But try asking her or him to help you make the approach outlined here work; don't just hand over total responsibility for deciding what you need. |
The use of supplements provides an excellent opportunity to begin to learn how to watch our internal signals and see what we need and when.
My grandmother, I later found out, had some vague sense of heaviness in her back and legs that the supplement corrected. When it was better, she stopped. She didn't need any literature on the use of vitamins E and D, or any warnings about potential toxicity. She took her walks until the last year of her long life, and never concerned herself with fractures or bone disease. |
I asked, having little interest in supplements myself back then. She told me the name of the proprietary formula, and I looked it up. It contained megadoses of vitamins E and D. I was alarmed. I could see the utility of the E, since I had just begun to hear of the use of vitamin E to slow aging. But the huge doses of D concerned me. "How long have you been taking this?" I asked. "For many years," she said. Then, apparently noticing my serious tone, she added, "Well, I don't take it all the time." I was puzzled. Still in medical school, all I knew was prescribed doses. "So when do you take it? |
Stop your supplements for a while. Even if you live a hectic life and are an adrenaline addict, your body needs an occasional breather. Summer is a great time to do this, because generally you'll get more fresh fruits and vegetables, sunshine, and fresh air then, and as a result you'll need less supplementation. And since you don't wear a computerized intravenous dispenser, you are doomed to dose yourself in a way that is not precise. The stuff you take in that isn't needed must be gotten rid of. Give your body a chance to flush it all out. |

Chapter 9 provides specific recommendations on the use of supplements (i.e., vitamins, minerals and herbs) to promote healing in those who suffer from chronic illness.
Finally, detoxification of the body is a very important step in the healing process. In an industrialized society, we are exposed to a "mountain" of toxins every day. These toxins include pesticides, heavy metals and hydrocarbons. Exposure to these toxins can cause problems with the immune system, the hormonal system, the neurological system and, in fact, the entire body. |
I have found that the quality of some of the over-the-counter supplements is poor. Either they do not contain the amount of the substance that is advertised, or the substance is in a non-absorbable form. For example, many of my patients take DHEA, an adrenal hormone (see Chapter 5), which they have purchased over-the-counter. When I check DHEA levels on these patients, approximately 80% of the time the DHEA levels do not correlate with the dosage on the label of the product. Changing the brand of the DHEA supplement to a more reliable product (i.e. |

They are also not required on deli or supermarket take-out foods, spices and herb teas, sprouts grown from irradiated seeds, ingredients in supplements, or plant-food ingredients that are processed again, such as apples in applesauce. Consumer labels on irradiated foods are required only for foods sold in their whole form (apackage of chicken breasts, a bag of oranges, a bag of wheat flour); unpackaged meat and poultry (for example, from a butcher) is supposed to be labeled, too. |

Sources of lead include air pollution, bone meal supplements, water that has passed through lead pipes, batteries, lead paint, cigarette smoke and hair dyes.
Arsenic
Arsenic is an environmental pollutant. Arsenic, at high levels, can cause many neurotoxic effects, including headaches, drowsiness, confusion, weakness and skin problems. It has been associated with anemia, kidney and liver problems, hypertension, heart failure and skin cancers. Sources of arsenic include industrial pollution, insecticides, seafood and auto exhaust. |

Arm against allergies. If your loss of smell comes regularly during hay fever season, you'll need to see an allergist, says Jordan S. Josephson, M.D., an otolaryngologist in Brooklyn. "For a day or two, the usual over-the-counter antihistamines are fine," he says. "But if it lasts more than two weeks, your allergist may recommend nasal steroid sprays or a prescription decongestant." (For more tips on allergy relief, see Nose, Runny, on page 389. |

So, you see how important it is to eat nourishing foods and to take supplements to rebuild and strengthen your body. Instead of strengthening the body, drugs weaken it because they weaken your immune system, your first line of defense. Be cautious! Learn about the drugs you are taking. Never, never stop taking a medication without the supervision of your doctor, and never stop taking a medication cold turkey! Educate yourself, your physician, and your druggist. Take control of your health. |

If our diet is properly balanced, we have no need for supplements. We forget that most deficiencies are caused by a breakdown of physical metabolism rather than a particular nutrient missing from the food we eat. If our diet is in balance, our body has the capacity to produce enough of the necessary vitamins needed to maintain health. Steaming or cooking food may destroy a small amount of the vitamins, but the process of cooking enhances our bodies' ability to assimilate what is there. |

To avoid ingesting too much iron and copper, avoid multimineral supplements, especially iron-enriched tonics, and limit or eliminate consumption of red meat, especially liver and other organ meats. Chelation therapy may remove excesses of these metals.
LJ Perform moderate, gentle exercises, such as tai chi or yoga. Psychiatrist John Kabat-Zinn reports that the key to exercise for angina relief is "mindfulness." Slow, flowing, repetitive exercises that require mental focus distract the mind from pain and indirectly relieve overburdened coronary arteries. |

There is no evidence that phytochemicals as supplements have anything like the power of whole foods. Rather, what plant biologists are discovering is that any one vegetable or fruit may have thousands of biologically active phytochemicals. Every bite of a PowerFood is a cocktail containing thousands of these phytochemicals, all of them acting together in mysterious ways to offer a multitude of effects, fighting against the likes of cancer and heart disease while bestowing good health and vitality. |
Instead of supplements, said the experts, get your beta carotene in food—in the fruits and vegetables in which they naturally occur.
The answer, therefore, is no more in the short-run, quick-fix, single-focus deprivation diet than in the search for a magic potion or pill. There is simply no alternative to a fundamental change in long-term diet. It is essential for good health.
The good news is that it is not difficult to make the change to a healthful diet. |
Because fruits, vegetables, and grains contain a synergistic mix of micronutrients that hasn't been duplicated in pills or capsules, eating a wide range of foods from the plant kingdom is considered better than relying on supplements.

Supplements, such as vitamins and minerals, may overload and imbalance the body with nutrients and substances that it does not need. Chinese herbs can help the body regain strength and balance. |
REPPED: Just as North Americans and Europeans are accustomed to using a multitude of over-the-counter drugs as well as vitamins and other supplements for various conditions, the Chinese people know the use of a wide variety of herbs and other natural substances that are available in their local pharmacies. Because of the growing popularity of acupuncture and traditional Chinese medicine in the West and the increasing popularity of many Chinese herbs and products, this book is intended to serve as an introduction and practical guide. |
Yogurt, the fermented food of India, is a more easily assimilated form of milk and supplements calcium and important beneficial intestinal bacteria. If there is a need for more yang warmth and pungency, one can add a dash of red or black pepper, ginger, or a slice of dried galangal root cooked with the rice and beans or sauteed with the spices. One can be very creative with the basic kichari recipe and still preserve its essential therapeutic value. |

There are now some good indications that the damage can be reduced significantly by special nutritional supplements, especially if their is early intervention. These children need special supplementation beginning as soon as possible after birth and certainly within the first year.
Targeted Nutritional Intervention is a program developed by Trisomy 21 Research specifically to address the nutritional needs of DS children. The founder, Dixie Lawrence Tafoya, who has two children with DS, was profiled on ABC's Day One news magazine. |
Although research has not been directed to prove this, it would seem that supplements of melatonin and OPCs (Pycnogenol and grape seed extract) would be a reasonable response to address the oxidative damage in MS patients. Effective dosages cannot be determined without specific research, but they will probably be higher than the generally recommended dosages for these antioxidants.

His vitamin supplements include vitamins B and C, both of which have now been shown important in dementia prevention, as well as Siberian ginseng root bark. Up to the age of 94, he maintained a full schedule of board meetings and charitable functions, and his mind remained as clear as a bell until an unfortunate fall took his life.
The historical use of herbal medicines to treat dementia diseases like Alzheimer's varies according to the different traditions. |

My exposure to a patient who had had his widespread prostatic cancer controlled and eradicated by nutritional support and supplements had a great impact on my medical approach some twenty years ago and forced me to rethink my position on the therapeutics of cancer.
Foundational in the disease of cancer is faulty immune function, and closely associated with this faulty immune function is the problem of reduced antioxidation. In fact, repeated studies have shown that the antioxidant levels in the cancer patient are dramatically reduced. A good example is in the prostate-cancer victim. |

Some people assume that anemia is always caused by "iron-poor" blood and that they need iron supplements. However, determining the cause of anemia is never a task for self-diagnosis. It is essential to conduct laboratory tests, especially tests that measure iron levels and iron-absorption ability, before trying to correct the problem.
The underlying cause of anemia may be excessive blood loss, excessive red blood cell destruction, or deficient red blood cell production. |

I emphasize active because only about half of the garcinia contained in the supplements is actually HCA. The remainder, as with any herbal preparation, is plant matter that is not used by the body. This difference between garcinia content and active HCA has been taken into consideration in the product chart below.
Research has shown that it is virtually impossible to take too much, or "overdose," on HCA. Researchers liken its toxic effects to citric acid, the substance that gives oranges, limes, and other citrus fruits its tangy taste. |
Always consult your health care provider before beginning any supplements or nutritional products.
CAUTION!—Not intended for children or for use during pregnany or breastfeeding.

Correct Dose, Right Time
The two supplements, HCA and chromium, combine to curb your appetite, metabolize fat, and, most important, increase your sensitivity to the insulin produced by your pancreas. To achieve the maximum benefit of these sup plements, you need to take the correct dosage at the proper time.
How Much Should I Take?
I recommend taking about 1,500 milligrams to 6,000 milligrams of active HCA per day, and about 800 to 1,000 micrograms of chromium per day. Doses should be taken three times per day, one hour before each meal, with sixteen ounces of water. |

PHYTOCHEMICAL POWERHOUSES
The phytochemical levels of our ancient ancestors' diets would have been off the charts by today's standards. Phytochemicals are health-enhancing compounds other than vitamins and minerals that prevent cancer, possibly boost the immune system, and protect against aging and heart disease. They're found only in unprocessed, natural foods—from fruits, vegetables, garlic, and soybeans to walnuts, wheat germ, and green tea. "Phytochemicals have completely changed the way we view foods. |
Supplements, drinks, and energy bars are just the beginning of a wave of high-tech products packed with varying amounts of phytochemicals, probiotics, herbs, vitamins, and antioxidants. Watch this trend with a wary eye and don't be fooled by new products advertised as herb- or phytochemical-fortified mood enhancers, energy boosters, life extenders, or disease fighters. To eat in tune with your evolutionary roots, you're better off sticking with wholesome, unprocessed, real food, which is what your body craves anyway. |

It is not merely chance that people in excellent physical condition are at low risk for disease, live longer, enjoy optimistic outlooks and good moods, handle stress well, think clearly, and look younger than their years. |
