They have a unique take on supplements that delivers nutrients in the form of real food, not isolated ingredients.
We've all heard that food is the best medicine, right? And we know that plants and microorganisms are the best "translators" of raw ingredients into bioavailable forms. For example, calcium from ground seashells is not nearly as useful as calcium that's been absorbed, assimilated and molecularly transformed by a broccoli plant. |

When I was at a discount warehouse club recently, I was looking at all these supplements – calcium, vitamin D, flax oil, cod liver oil and so on – and reading the ingredient labels, and I could only find one product that I would personally consume. Only one! I saw people buying these vitamins by the basket-load, thinking they were doing themselves some good. The only one I found that didn't have any artificial ingredients or other garbage in it was organic flax oil. Every other product offered was garbage, in my view. Nutritionally, it was a disaster. |

And yes, there's a tiny amount of mercury in the fish, but it's a fraction of the mercury found in farmed fish, and even then, the amount of protein mass you're taking from these supplements is so small (because a little goes a long, long way) that it's only like eating 1-2 bites of fish each day.
I've been taking anywhere from 9 - 12 capsules of this fish protein daily. But remember, I don't eat red meat, and I'm not into eating meat from other land animals, either. |

It could be something that's actually dangerous to your health, so you'd better read the ingredients labels on those vitamins, minerals and supplements, in addition to reading the ingredients labels on foods, as I've always recommended. Watch out! Just because you buy something that looks good on the label – something that claims to have flax oil, salmon oil or vitamin B in it – it doesn't mean it's actually good for you.
How to put a negative spin on healthy vitamins: Use cheap vitamins to skew results
Now, of course, researchers have also figured all this out. |

The show 60 Minutes did an exposé on human supplement companies about four or five years ago, and they took the top four or five brand name companies and found out that only two out of the five had the supplements that were on their label. It is even worse than the pet industry.
Mike: Oh, I'm sure.
Newman: You get these tablet things that are filled with yeast and liver. The liver is the most detoxifying thing in the body, and when you fill the body with other liver, you're giving the body concentrated toxins that came out of this other animal. Liver and yeast are so overused in our industry. |
These were the two supplements I used the most. From there, I just started to develop more and more products. I got very frustrated with the pet food situation. Then we developed pet foods. As hard as it was, I'm very glad that I did it, because we are still the only company that is truly doing it.
Mike: Are you finding a lot of acceptance for your product line?
Newman: Yes I am. It grows through word-of-mouth. The retailers who bring it in become very loyal to us, because their customers are very loyal to them. |

Holick: These would be, not supplements, but oral drugs.
Adams: OK, so these would be by prescription only. But they're molecularly identical to the activated vitamin D in your body?
Dr. Holick: Exactly, but would be more potent than the activated vitamin D.
Adams: Do you have a practice where people can visit you long distance? I mean, they can come visit you?
Dr. Holick: Yeah, I have a lot of people from around the globe that will make an appointment and see me. And I'm certainly happy to do that.
Adams: What city are you located in?
Dr. Holick: In Boston. |

Some studies suggest that there may be new supplements to recommend in coming years; arginine, for instance, the amino acid that is so critical to the production of artery-expanding nitric oxide. However, my experience suggests that our patients are getting plenty of arginine through the plant-based foods they eat—especially legumes. So for now I recommend the first five supplements listed below for all patients, with or without heart disease. And depending on your cholesterol level, the sixth may also be appropriate.
1. Multivitamins. |

These men, for example, are taking more nutritional supplements than ever before, and instead of pursuing the cheap, low-quality "bodybuilding" supplements that typify the past purchasing behavior of men, they're now consuming brain-enhancing nutrients (like bacopa, Lion's Mane, ginkgo and PS) and immune boosting nutrients (alkalizing greens, medicinal mushrooms, fish oils, etc.). They're turning away from over-processed, over-cooked and over-hyped brand-name foods and learning ways to eat more raw, organic and locally-grown produce. |

Research indicates that dietary supplements, such as zinc or vitamin A, are most likely not effective in the treatment of acne, and these supplements may very well be unhealthy if too much is taken (Sources: Journal of Pediatric Hematology and Oncology, October 2002, pages 582-584; Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology, August 2002, pages 231-240; and European Journal of Dermatology, June 2000, pages 269-273).

One last example: People who take supplements are healthier than the population at large, yet their health probably has nothing whatsoever to do with the supplements they take— most of which recent studies have suggested are worthless. Supplement takers tend to be better educated, more affluent people who, almost by definition, take a greater than usual interest in personal health—confounders that probably account for their superior health. |

Probiotic supplements, in addition, may prove beneficial if you have changed your diet and still suffer from problems such as irregular bowel movements, indigestion, elevated cholesterol, or arthritis. With no undesirable side effects and minimal cost, you have everything to gain and nothing to lose by trying probiotic supplements.
For Larry and Louise, we found that a simple diet change brought about the desired results, so no added probiotic supplements were necessary. I've seen this happen over and over in my practice. |

Let's start with some basics: the number one cause of death in this country is organized medicine and there is a huge effort out there to try to discredit nutritional supplements and prevent people from learning the truth about how supplements and nutrition can not only prevent chronic disease, but even reverse it. There's plenty of evidence for this.
However, that doesn't mean I'm not willing to stand up and point out a company in the nutritional supplements industry that is ripping off customers. |

This state of affairs, which has always been a source of deep frustration to those on the fringes of medicine, reached fever pitch when the EU Food supplements Directive was threatening to sweep supplements off the shelves.
The idea was to bring safe maximum limits into line across nation states but, as Rose Shepherd suggested in a passionate piece she wrote for the Observer Magazine, the move hijacked food supplements, forcing them to be seen as medicines. |

Some vitamins are actually more effective in supplements than in foodstuffs (e.g., vitamin A is more bioavailable in supplement than in spinach or sweet potato). On the other hand, lycopene is more available from eggs than from supplements, and cooking tomatoes increases its availability. The usability of vitamins in food varies with the method of preparation. "Far too little is known about nutrient availability as a function of plant variety and maturity." The old canard—more research is needed—is surely true here.

Injections are best. Sublingual administration is also effective.
Q The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition reported that up to 30 percent of people over the age of sixty-five are unable to absorb vitamin Bj2 and folic acid properly because they do not produce enough hydrochloric acid and/or they suffer from an overgrowth of bacteria in the intestinal tract.

I use the exact same design criteria, and we are using exactly the same manufacturers that make our human supplements. Here is our pet website, www.2Docs.net
You will find out all about us there. We are using the highest-quality coenzyme vitamins, Kreb's cycle nutrients, and minimizing excipients and fillers. Pets cannot get better supplements. We have added a human-grade liver flavoring to most of our formulas, because many animals prefer the taste. The little pets that can be fussy, they often want something that tastes like liver. The larger animals aren't so picky, as it turns out. |

Let nutritional supplement makers tell the truth
Yet another excellent suggestion for transitioning to a healthy nation is to allow nutritional supplement manufacturers to tell the truth about what their supplements do for your health. This is something the FDA has disallowed for decades. They have never allowed manufacturers of nutritional supplements to make true statements about what those supplements can do for your health. |

Whole leaf aloe vera supplements have been available on the market for a long time, but many of the common aloe vera supplements are a bit misleading, in my opinion. "Whole leaf" means they grabbed the entire aloe vera plant, blended up the whole thing (gel, sap and leaf skin), then dried it into a powder and packed that into capsules. At first, it sounds great... until you realize that the sap of aloe vera causes diarrhea. It's true: The sap or resin (also called latex) of aloe vera is a dark brown liquid that was traditionally used by American Indians to treat severe constipation. |

The use of a multiple vitamin and mineral supplements is associated with a minimum 30 percent reduction of diabetes risk in men and a 16 percent reduction in risk for women; however, the supplements used in these studies were far from ideal, in our opinion. We believe that by taking a better quality supplement, those reductions can be even greater. In appendix E we provide our recommendations for selecting a high-quality formula.

This in no way would alter the time-honored conclusion of the Congress that supplements are to be considered foods. On the contrary, all it would do is exempt supplements from the registry.
These changes, all contained in the amendment which was approved yesterday, make clear that there are no new dietary supplement requirements in the Food and Drug Administration Revitalization Act. It is my hope this will reassure the many who have expressed concern that Congress was inadvertently repealing Public Law 109-462.

And so passage of the Durbin amendment could be seen to supersede the law we enacted last year for supplements, which I am relieved to hear was not the intent of our colleague, Senator Durbin.
Consequently, the amendment we adopted yesterday contains language that Senator Harkin and I suggested to make certain that dietary supplements would not be covered by the new food safety language and thus last year's law would not be superseded. To reassure those who are interested in the Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act, DSHEA, I wanted to take a moment to outline those changes. |
