Any source of complete protein (eggs, milk, and meat) is rich in these amino acids. supplements containing arginine and ornithine are available. You can start by taking 1 gram (1,000 mg) twice a day of arginine (2 grams total) or 500 mg twice a day of ornithine (1 gram or 1,000 mg total). This is a relatively large dose and is probably best taken in powder form and mixed with juice or in a shake. If you have oral or genital herpes or shingles, you may want to use arginine with caution as it can stimulate an outbreak.

We took echinacea and goldenseal; large doses of vitamins C and A; zinc supplements; flower pollen supplements; and lactobacil-lus to counteract the effects of the erythromycin on the digestive tract.
The homeopathic remedies we used were the cell salt Magnesia phosphorica, Drosera for my husband and son, Pulsatilla for me, and Spongia for my nine-year-old daughter. We all took Pertussin 30c once daily.
Looking back, I would not forgo any of the three courses of treatment we chose. |

When sufficient iodine is furnished through supplements from sea vegetation (kelp, seaweed, Irish moss, etc.), the enlarged thyroid gland shrinks to normal size and the diseased condition disappears. Example: by limiting the different degrees of iodine given a mammal, it's possible to produce any condition between severe goiter and normal functioning.
The Effect of Good Food on the Brain
At first glance, no connection between food and thinking is apparent. Yet I assure you that, just as surely as food affects the different parts of the body, it also affects our thinking. |

Although omega-3 supplements and vitamin E can help you, the wrong dosage may increase your risk for stroke. Therefore, be sure to consult your physician before taking fish-oil or vitamin E supplements.
It is also beneficial to consider moving toward a more vegetarian diet, because plant foods are naturally low in fat, high in protective antioxidants and phytochemicals, and higher in fiber. All of which can help you reduce your risks for heart disease.
Preventing High Blood Pressure
High blood pressure is defined as anything at or above 140/90 ml of mercury. |

People on weight-loss programs, or those who do not have access to a balanced diet, should take these minerals in the form of supplements.
Iodine is a very important element for the regulation of the fluid content of the body. Iodine is essential for the thyroid gland to manufacture thyroxin, its primary hormone. It seems that thyroxin is the element that stimulates the cells to manufacture all the pump proteins that regulate the sodium, potassium, and other mineral balances outside and inside the cells, and that generate energy in the process. |
Do not take individual amino acids as supplements instead of a balanced protein diet. At a certain concentration, some have adverse effects on the mineral and vitamin balance of the body. Amino acids in the body function more efficiently when they are proportionately represented.
Eggs are a wholesome food. An average egg weighs 50 grams and has an energy value of eighty calories. The white of an egg weighs about 33 grams and the yolk about 17 grams. Eggs contain about 6 grams of top-quality proteins, no carbohydrates, and no fiber. |
If you do not eat kelp, wheat bran, wheat germ, almonds, and other nuts that have very high magnesium content, or green leafy vegetables in which magnesium is a component of chlorophyll, you should take magnesium supplements every day. As for calcium, in order of their calcium content, kelp, cheese, sesame seeds, bean curd, molasses, pulses—lentils, different beans—figs, almonds, spring greens, watercress, parsley, plain yogurt, shrimp, broccoli, milk, cottage cheese, and olives will provide the calcium needs of the body. |
I began using natural supplements with vitamins, herbs, and other natural medical techniques. The natural doctor's advice was to increase my water consumption and decrease my caffeine intake as well. 1 had lost the feeling in my feet, was always tired and achy, depressed, and had little hope.
1 began to drink more water and reduced my caffeine intake somewhat, and by 1995 I began to feel and look much better. Yet 1 was still only consuming a quart to a quart and a half daily, and not flushing all the caffeine out of my system, nor was I using sea salt. |

When we fast for a 24 to 36 hour period, or from 3 to 10 days, all the Vital Force in the body is used for internal purification... which includes purification of the arteries in the body. That is why after a 10 day fast there will be a feeling of lightness in the body, the mind will become keener, more alert and the memory will improve. The craving for physical activity will often become intense. |

Each srep in the sequence should be done for abour two weeks before going to the next step:
STEP ONE: As a clinical nutritionist, I have found that making changes to the eating habits can be accomplished more easily if the body's nutritional needs are first met with supplements. We have to make up for past deficiencies. Minerals reduce the craving for sugars, for example. Good-quality oils reduce the cravings for fatty foods. I usually start my clients on supplements before asking them to change the diet. Philosophically, it probably isn't the best thing, but it simply works better! |

The spectrum of these substances includes the components of our diet (foods, drinks, chemicals), supplements (nutrients, herbs, and homeopathic remedies), drugs (prescription, over-the-counter, and recreational), and pollutants (herbicides, pesticides, hydrocarbons, and petrochemicals). These all are part of our possible choices and have effects on our life and health.
How do we develop our preferences? When do our preferences become needs? Why do our needs become addictions? Why do some of us become addicted while others can stop on our own? |

The notion that deficiencies of a certain vitamin or nutrient should be remedied by concentrated doses or supplements is both false and possibly very dangerous. If our diet is properly balanced, we have no need for supplements. We forget that most deficiencies are caused by a breakdown of physical metabolism rather than a particular nutrient missing from the food we eat. If our diet is in balance, our body has the capacity to produce enough of the necessary vitamins needed to maintain health. |

Arnold is a fairly healthy guy in his mid-sixties who wound up in a hospital emergency room in the middle of the night, frightened and in pain, wondering if he was having a heart attack. It turned out he was suffering from a type of angina that causes spasms of the heart muscle. After giving him some drugs and monitoring him for a few hours, the doctors sent him home that night, telling him to make an appointment with his physician. |
The men who took the supplements had lower homocysteine levels after six months, and their arteries were only half as likely to renarrow following their angioplasties.
One much-feared disease that is thought to be related to high homocysteine levels is Alzheimer's disease. This makes sense, because it's likely that the brain deterioration seen with this disease has something to do with the deterioration of blood vessels that feed brain tissues. In a study from Tufts University, researchers measured homocysteine levels in 1,092 subjects over a span of about a decade. |
And that doesn't count the interactions with food, over-the-counter drugs, and supplements. That means it's up to you to minimize your drug intake and keep close track of what you are taking.
In Part II of this book, you'll find lists of drug interactions, but remember these are only known interactions. Any drug combination can cause a new interaction because your body and your biochemistry are unique.
When prescribing a drug, your physician should take into account not only interactions between drugs but also how various drugs are going to interact with your unique health profile. |
Oil-based supplements are more bioavailable—and therefore more potent—because CoQIO is a fat-soluble nutrient. You can take one 30 to 60 mg capsule up to three times a day with meals. If you have serious heart disease, you can double that amount for a few months.
Hawthorn Berries (Crataegus oxyacantha)

A WORD TO THE WISE
Before you spend money on expensive and exotic herbs and nutritional supplements to try to fortify your immune system, don't try to fortify on top of a toxic system. You would not pour new topsoil over a toxic waste sight and say that now it's okay to plant. Nor, after driving your car 10,000 miles since your last oil change, would it be wise to add clean, fresh oil. It would become instantly contaminated by the old, dirty oil. You would first drain your dirty oil. So, why take expensive nutritional supplements that are only going to go into a toxic system? |

Herbs such as garlic, red clover, echinacea, or cayenne may also enhance detoxification, as can saunas, sweats, and niacin therapy (see Chapter 6 for more discussion of supplements for Detoxification). Simply increasing liquid intake and decreasing fats and refined flour and sugar products will improve elimination and lessen toxin buildup. Increased consumption of filtered water, herb teas, fruits, and vegetables while reducing fats (especially fried foods, red meat, and milk products) will also help detoxification. |
He gave me a list of supplements to start on and a sheet on how to do the anti-Candida diet. He had explained how all my good intentions of drinking carrot juice were just like feeding sugar to the yeast. I was encouraged because now we had found a possible culprit. I now knew where to put my energy. Yet still, I didn't know what results to expect.
Within two weeks of following Dr. Haas's recommendations I had lost ten pounds, and I felt great. By ten months I lost a total of forty-eight pounds. Now my heart is regular and strong. My emotional health is so much better. |

As the dosage increased from 30 to 90 mg, the subjects' skin became increasingly resistant to sunburn from simulated sunlight.
A separate study identified at least one of the reasons beta-carotene protects against sunburn. Scientists at the University of Bath in England, determined how UV rays activated the HO-1 gene, which helps promote the inflammatory response in skin after sunburn. Beta-carotene, however, suppressed the activity of the HO-1 gene. |
In addition, iron from vegetables is absorbed less efficiently than is iron from meat.
Inflammatory Diseases
What Happens
Nearly everyone is familiar with the redness, swelling, and pain associated with inflammation. Inflammation is a normal process that helps our bodies fight infections and also initiates healing after an injury. After that healing, the inflammatory response should subside. In chronic inflammatory diseases, however, the inflammatory reaction continues and becomes destructive.
Common inflammatory diseases include rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, allergies, and asthma. |
Over six months Ohnishi asked 10 patients to take 6 grams of vitamin C, 1,200 IU of vitamin E, 1,000 meg of folic acid, and 6 grams of aged garlic extract daily. Meanwhile the subjects' twin siblings took only folic acid. People taking the high-potency vitamins had one-third the number of painful sickle-cell episodes, compared with those taking only folic acid.
Red blood cells from people with sickle-cell anemia are more susceptible to free-radical damage, and low intake of vitamin E may increase the risk of sickle-cell symptoms. |

Even though many people claim that natural and synthetic supplements are chemically identical, natural supplements do have molecular, biological, and electromagnetic differences that produce greater levels of biological activity; they are better utilized by the body than synthetic forms.
In some cases, synthetic vitamins have entirely different chemical structures than their natural counterparts as found in food. In his book The Body Electric, Robert O. Becker, M.D., states, "All organic compounds . . . are identified by the way they bend light in solution. |

The question is often asked: If we eat a good diet, do we need to take supplements? The truth is that very few of us eat a "good" diet, even if we agreed what that means. We are all exposed to levels of stress and pollution for which we are ill-prepared. When we are faced with greater-than-usual stressors, our bodies require greater-than-usual nutrition. Stress takes a nutritional toll on teenagers, as it does on adults.
It is an unusual teenager who will eat a consistently excellent diet or who will take nutritional supplements without being reminded daily. My children are no exception. |

Aftet being harvested and dtied, kelp that is to be sold for human consumption is usually powdered for use in capsules or added to supplements and seasonings. Powdered kelp has a "sea" flavor that adds a subtle salty dimension to salads, soups, vegetables, baked goods, and beverages. Dried kelp can be diced and added to soups and stews. Considered the most completely mineralized food, kelp greatly increases the nutritional value of all food prepared with it.
