Manipulating Our Microflora with Probiotic supplements he buzzword "probiotics" will be popping up more and more as health-conscious individuals become increasingly aware of the role of gut microflora. Probiotics are used for the purpose of adding a particular species of bacteria in order to rebalance the intestines and thereby improve a person's health. Probiotics are sold as foods and pills (supplements) that contain millions of friendly bacteria and sometimes yeast. Purchased in natural food stores, probiotics are usually found in the refrigerated section. |
Fiber supplements, such as partially hydrolyzed guar gum (PHGG; SunFiber is one example) and wheat bran, produce improvements in IBS symptoms (abdominal pain and bowel habits). PHGG is better tolerated and preferred by patients over other kinds of fiber supplements.
Flaxseeds increase bowel movements by about 30 percent and can be consumed as a cereal (for example, Uncle Sam Cereal) or added to any grain before cooking (add 2-4 tablespoons of whole flaxseeds to each cup of grain). Flaxseeds may also reduce the risk for colon cancer. |

Within this group, male smokers who took high-dose vitamin E supplements (>400 mg/day) for at least 10 years had a reduced risk of advanced prostate cancer, although they may be at increased risk for nonadvanced forms of the disease. By study end, 1338 men had been diagnosed with prostate cancer, of these, 38.9% had the advanced form of the disease. According to the author, these findings parallel results from two earlier studies. In one including only smokers, the protective effect of vitamin E was limited to more aggressive forms of prostate cancer (stages II-IV). |
Supplemental glucosamine is generally used to reduce pain and immobility associated with osteoarthritis, especially in the knee joint. The supplements are usually derived from crab shells, although a corn source is also available. Most studies of osteoarthritis have used the sulfate form of glucosamine (D'Ambrosio et al 1981; Pujalte et al 1980). Other forms include glucosamine hydrochloride and N-acetyl glucosamine. |

For example, one recent alert informed subscribers of the results of a large study looking at vitamin E supplements, which showed that contrary to widespread belief, they don't help patients with heart disease. They do, however, slightly increase the risk of death.
When doctors pay more attention to the Cochrane Collaboration and to In-foPOEMs than to drug reps, and when they learn to read the literature more critically, they will undoubtedly do a better job of treating their patients. |

Recommendations include increasing hydration, increasing fiber in the diet, regular exercise, and digestive enzyme and probiotic supplements to enhance digestion and absorption of nutrients to maintain healthy intestinal flora. |
When digestive enzyme supplements are consumed with food, the need for the body to produce digestive enzymes decreases, preventing our bodies from having to use up nutrients and energy to provide them. This simple solution increases the benefit we get from food and the efficiency of our digestive systems. As you will soon see, this in turn will benefit our health in major ways, adding to our quality of life and well-being.

THE IMPORTANCE OF PROPER pH BALANCE
Enzyme supplements help balance the immune system, but they can't solve all the body's problems, and some health issues can affect how well they work and how much they benefit our health. One such example is the body's pH balance.
The body must maintain a specific acid-alkaline balance to survive. This balance is measured in terms of pH. The term "pH," which actually stands for potential of hydrogen (or as a good friend of mine, Dr. |
As a result plant-based enzymes are considered to be among the safest supplements you can buy.

THE EXERCISE CONNECTION
Don't expect exercise to hasten your weight loss in the first few weeks of a diet. Increasing muscle mass can actually interfere with slimming down because it builds muscle, which weighs more than the fat it displaces. (Your clothes will fit better, however, so you may see it in your jeans before you do on the scale.) This is not to say you shouldn't work out if you're accustomed to doing so. |

DIGOXIN
Digoxin, derived from the foxglove plant, is used to treat heartbeat irregularities (arrhythmias), generally atrial fibrillation and atrial flutter— both of which are dangerous conditions. While formerly used to treat congestive heart failure, more modern drugs (diuretics, ACE inhibitors) are usually used for this condition today.
Action: Digoxin (brand names Lanoxin, Lanoxicaps) works by making the heart muscle contract more forcefully. |

In a recent review of 33 studies that examined the effect of potassium on blood pressure, researchers discovered that participants who started out with normal blood pressure and then added 2,340 mg of potassium daily (from foods, supplements, or both) were able to lower their risk of developing high blood pressure by 25 percent. The reductions were ultimately greatest for people who already had high blood pressure. Another possible benefit of potassium: It may protect against stroke. |
While studies of weight loss using green tea supplements have shown mixed results, in several animal studies, green tea demonstrated the ability to lower blood sugar.
Green Tea Releases Feel-Good Dopamine
A substance in green tea called theanine is helpful in improving mood and increasing a sense of relaxation. In fact, it's used in Japan for just that purpose. Theanine induces the release of a neurotransmitter called GABA, which tends to calm down the brain. Theanine also triggers the release of dopamine, one of the main brain chemicals associated with well-being. |

The food industry currently supplements everything from flour to breakfast cereal to baby formula with iron.
You know what they say about too much of a good thing?
Our relationship with iron is much more complex than it's been considered traditionally. It's essential—but it also provides a proverbial leg up to just about every biological threat to our lives. With very few exceptions in the form of a few bacteria that use other metals in its place, almost all life on earth needs iron to survive.
Parasites hunt us for our iron; cancer cells thrive on our iron. |
Thirty-five years ago, doctors in New Zealand routinely injected Maori babies with iron supplements. They assumed that the Maori (the indigenous people of New Zealand) had a poor diet, lacking iron, and that their babies would be anemic as a result.
The Maori babies injected with iron were seven times as likely to suffer from potentially deadly infections, including septicemias (blood poisoning) and meningitis. Like all of us, babies have isolated strains of potentially harmful bacteria in their systems, but those strains are normally kept under control by their bodies. |
Study after study has shown that folic acid supplements reduce birth defects that can cause damage to a developing brain or spinal cord. The connection is so strong that the government required grains to be fortified with folic acid much as drinking water is fortified with fluoride. And there's been a corresponding decrease in diseases, such as spina bifida, that are related to folic acid deficiency in pregnant women.
That's a wonderful thing—but it may not be the whole story. Our understanding of epigenetics is so immature we have to be wary about unintended consequences. |
The compounds in the vitamin supplements include methyl donors—molecules that form the methyl groups that become these genetic stop signs.
Thin and brown weren't the only benefits the mice gained through methylation. The agouti gene in mice is linked to higher rates of diabetes and cancer. The mice with the switched-off agouti genes had significantly lower rates of cancer and diabetes than their parents.
Of course, we've long understood the basic idea that good nutrition in an expectant mother is important for infant health. |

If you don't want to take supplements, rosehip syrup is the richest food source of Vitamin C, with an average of 520 mg per 100 g. Blackcurrants, parsley, horseradish, turnip, cabbage, strawberries, grapefruit, pineapple, tomatoes and watercress, along with most fresh fruits and vegetables, are also rich in it.
A simple and inexpensive test is now available on the market to measure the level of Vitamin C in your body, using a urinary ascorbate stick, and there are other uncomplicated tests that can be carried out to measure your Vitamin C. |
To consume the 2000 mg that Pauling recommends someone would need to eat about 30 oranges a day, but there are supplements that can be taken easily. An economical one is ascorbic acid, which can be bought in powder form and mixed with orange juice. Half a teaspoon is approximately 2000 mg. You can't overdose on Vitamin C, as any excess will be eliminated.
Although overdosing is not dangerous, it can have unpleasant side-effects, and it is important to build up your intake of Vitamin C slowly. |
If in doubt about what supplements would do you the most good, consult a practitioner.
Minerals
It is the function of minerals to build basic cell substances, and each cell needs specific minerals for the body's chemistry to work properly. There are about 25 minerals essential for good health.
Too little in the diet, or poor absorption by the body, can lead to serious deficiencies of them.
Calcium and phosphorus are present in the body in greater amounts than other minerals. Calcium is found mostly in bones and teeth and makes up about two per cent of body weight—nearly 1. |
Asthmatics should make an effort to eat a diet rich in Vitamin B6, even if they do not take supplements of it. Foods that have high B6 levels include wholegrain cereals, bananas, liver, avocado and lean meat. Vitamin B6 deficiency signs are low blood sugar, tiredness, depression, dermatitis and other skin problems, and susceptibility to infections.
Vitamin B12 (eobalamin)
Vitamin B12 reduces the effects of toxins and helps combat the effects of metabisulphites in those sensitive to them. |

Athletes often use carnitine supplements to enhance energy and endurance, while others use it as a weight-loss supplement. In HIV/AIDS, supplemental carnitine may be used to raise its levels in the cells; research suggests that this really helps to control nerve damage, which is a common consequence of HIV/AIDS and its treatment with drugs. (Carnitine is also useful for diabetic neuropathy, another kind of nerve damage.) Other benefits include prevention of muscle and fat wasting, and reduced levels of "bad" LDL cholesterol and triglycerides. |

The Bottom Line
Don't take diet pills, herbs, or supplements. Not for a few weeks, not for a few days, not ever. Not alone and not in combination with a diet program. In my opinion, diet drugs are a bad solution in the long and short term, even for people who have a lot of weight to lose (more than thirty pounds). If you are overweight you need to exercise, stop drinking sugar-added beverages, and cook all of your meals at home. If you need to drink soda, make it diet. Water is best. A pill will not solve your problem. |

Needed supplements:
• Calcium: 1,000-1,200 mg daily.
• Folic acid: 400-800 meg
• Vitamin B3: 25 mg daily.
• Vitamin B6: 10-50 mg daily. Vitamin B6 is strongly depleted by this drug, and this depletion is believed to be the reason for a common side effect: nerve damage in the hands and feet. Supplementing isoniazid with this vitamin is recommended even by mainstream medicine. See pages 48-52 for more on the B vitamins).
• Vitamin D: 1,000 mg daily.
