I actually saw a study this morning in one of my email newsletters for cancer treatment, where oncologists were basically saying, "Do not use supplementation while you're undergoing any conventional treatments."
Mike: Unbelievable.
Kaylor: It's back and forth. Obviously some people are more willing and open to it. There's still a huge amount of debate about what should be used. We mentioned antioxidants. Chemotherapy agents basically kill cancer cells through inducing an oxidative stress. |

The body does not produce large amounts of ALA, but because it is found naturally in only a few foods, including spinach, broccoli, potatoes, brewer's yeast, and organ meats, supplementation may be necessary.
Bilberry
The herb bilberry (Vaccinium myrtillus), a European relative of the American blueberry, contains natural antioxidants that keep capillary walls strong and flexible. They also help to maintain the flexibility of the walls of red blood cells and allow them to pass through the capillaries more freely. |
Taurine supplementation may benefit children with Down syndrome and muscular dystrophy. This amino acid is also used in some clinics for breast cancer treatment.
Excessive losses of taurine through the urine can be caused by many metabolic disorders. Cardiac arrhythmias, disorders of platelet formation, intestinal problems, an overgrowth of Candida, physical or emotional stress, a zinc deficiency, and excessive consumption of alcohol are all associated with high urinary losses of taurine. Excessive alcohol consumption also causes the body to lose its ability to utilize taurine properly. |
Several major studies have shown that daily supplementation with ALC significantly slows the progression of Alzheimer's disease, resulting in less deterioration in memory, attention and language, and spatial abilities. It also can be used to treat other cognitive disorders, as well as depression.
ALC provides numerous other benefits to many of the body's systems. |
Selenium supplementation has been found to protect the liver in people with alcoholic cirrhosis. Studies conducted at the University of Miami indicate that taking supplemental selenium may enhance the survival of people with AIDS by increasing both red and white blood cell counts. It has shown promise in the treatment of arthritis, cardiovascular disease, male infertility, cataracts, AIDS, and high blood pressure. |
Therefore, treatment should include the supplementation of various vitamins, minerals, and, in some cases, other hormones.
As long as the dosage remains low—4 to 8 international units of the hormone per week—HGH therapy appears to be free of significant side effects. Those side effects that do occur usually pass as the body adjusts to the therapy.
HGH is extremely expensive, and a program of HGH therapy can cost upwards of $20,000 a year, even using a synthetic version. Many people turn to the Internet in an attempt to buy HGH at savings. |

People are reluctant to change their eating habits, but herbal supplementation may reduce the resulting metabolic disorders. This change should not, however, be based on laboratory experimentation, pseudo-science, or testimonials. Until such time as medical benefit is proven in proper clinical trials we should continue to encourage the use of the effective orthodox treatments with known effects and side effects. In the long term it is likely that many traditional plant therapies will be proven effective and incorporated into orthodox treatment regimes.

Hopefully that has already been done by a vet, but we will educate you as to what the different symptoms are, how they are being created in the body and what proper supplementation and remedy will help to reverse them. It's a free service.
Mike: That is a wonderful benefit to offer.
Newman: We are the only ones in the country that do this, or in the world, as far as we know.
Mike: I would like to talk about cases of recovery from chronic disease.

I find that laughable, because when you look at the natural medicine world and natural healing, you find that a combination of natural sunlight, physical exercise, green tea, mineral supplementation, colon cleansing and avoidance of cancer-causing foods causes cancer rates to plummet far beyond 0.6 percent. In the world of natural medicine, we have natural strategies that are far safer and effective than the most miraculous cancer drug the pharmaceutical industry has ever come up with. |

Key factors include diet and supplementation, exposure to natural sunlight -- which is a natural appetite suppressant -- and the avoidance of all metabolic disrupters. Metabolic disruptors are ingredients in the food supply. I reveal them all in the book Grocery Warning, where I talk about them in great detail. The main ones to avoid are the excitotoxins, which include monosodium glutamate, yeast extract and other variations of this chemical. If you do that, you don't need bariatric surgery. You'll lose weight as a side effect of making healthy food choices. |

Stephen Sinatra, MD, a cardiologist, is a leading proponent of CoQ10 supplementation, especially for patients on statin-type cholesterol-lowering drugs like Crestor, Lipitor, and Zocor. These medications work by blocking an enzyme that is critical for the production of cholesterol. That same enzyme is essential for the manufacture of CoQ10.
According to Dr. Sinatra, patients with heart disease or congestive heart failure "must be given supplemental doses of coenzyme Q10 to offset the depleting effects of cholesterol-lowering agents. |

University of California at Davis, a leading expert on mineral absorption, concludes, "We would suggest that rather than substantially increasing zinc supplementation for soy formula, reduction of phytate content using new technological processes may be preferable." The cheaper, easier solution of adding more zinc has a downside because too much zinc interferes the absorption of other needed trace minerals such as iron and copper.32
Researchers have found victims of zinc deficiency among preschoolers in China who were raised on diets rich in phytic acid and fiber. |

Omega-3 supplements made from vegetable oils such as flax and hemp tend to be relatively free from chemicals and make a good choice for supplementation over the relatively polluted fish oils. However, a small group of people are unable to convert vegetable oils into oils that their body can use, so fish oils would be the oils of choice for them. |

In a double-blind study of people with asthma, supplementation with a proprietary extract of New Zealand green-lipped mussel (Lyprinol) twice a day for 8 weeks significantly decreased daytime wheezing and improved airflow through the bronchi.12 Each capsule of Lyprinol contains 50 mg of omega-3 fatty acids.
Where is it found?
Green-lipped mussels are found in the oceans off New Zealand. In supplement form, green-lipped mussel is available as a lipid extract or a freeze-dried powder. |

Do you realize how many hundreds of millions of people around the world could have their lives saved or improved through simple vitamin D supplementation or sensible exposure to natural sunlight? We could dramatically improve the quality and duration of life in a huge percentage of the global population. Yet, the only reason that isn't happening is because the defenders of conventional medicine continue to discredit sunlight. |

See Chapter 13.) supplementation of soy infant formula with methionine was eventually required by law. Before this became routine, infants with undiagnosed, untreated cystic fibrosis were at special risk for hypoalbuminemia and edema when fed soy proteins.45
Today's soy formulas also include added carnitine, required for the optimal mitochondrial oxidation of long-chain fatty acids, and taurine, a "conditionally essential" amino acid which functions as an antioxidant and conjugate of bile acids during infancy.46 (See Chapter 13. |

And should that person become infected with a particularly virulent strain, the severity of the illness is dramatically reduced. This protection also includes such diseases as smallpox and anthrax."

Continuing this line of research with rats, the team found that dietary supplementation with the soy isoflavone genistein over a 20-week period from pregnancy through weaning resulted in a dose-dependent reduction in microsomal thyroid peroxidase (TPO). They also observed a reduction in TPO activity in rats fed a standard soy-feed diet (containing 60 mg/kg total isoflavones) compared to those fed a soy-free diet (containing 1 mg/kg total isoflavones). |

BMD of total body (Figure 3) and radius through puberty over the placebo group [10]. But by age 18 years, the advantage was reduced. There was an interaction with size such that girls who were taller by age 18 did not fully catch up. The extent of catch-up growth undoubtedly depends on the degree of inadequacy of the diet, the timing and duration of the period of inadequacy, and the degree of repletion. Regardless, the period of inadequacy is itself a period of vulnerability, that is, in this example, a higher risk of fracture. |

ORAL CONTRACEPTIVES/ ESTROGEN REPLACEMENT THERAPY
These two medications are used at quite different times in a woman's life: the first, to prevent pregnancy or regulate menstrual cycles during the years of fertility; and the second, to deal with hot flashes and other symptoms that can crop up at menopause. Both contain some version of estrogen, which is a depleting drug, and—unless the woman is menopausal and has had a hysterectomy—will always contain some form of progestin, a synthetic version of progesterone. |

Goodman: That's why I believe that supplementation is so important; because when you don't eat properly, and even when you do, it's hard to get all the appropriate levels of the antioxidants that we need in our body.

The only way to overdose on vitamin D is to do it through supplementation or the mass consumption of substances like fish oils. Given the fact that people don't eat very much fish oil, it's very difficult to overdose unless you're actually chugging processed fish oil by the cupful. Cod liver oil is probably the best source of vitamin D, which is why I consider cod liver oil to be a superfood crucial for those people living in Northern climates who don't have access to natural sunlight. |

Eat breakfast every day, no matter what. Other than at dinner, our second favorite time to overeat is at lunch. If you do not eat a good breakfast, I guarantee you will eat more than you should at lunch, which will make you sluggish, tired and unproductive for the rest of the day. If you are like me, you have no interest in breakfast and would prefer to drink a cup of coffee to get the day started. I force myself to eat something that will give me good, clean energy for my body and brain. |

CS supplementation has proven to be an effective treatment for people with OA.
When to take glucosamine, chondroitin sulfate, or both: The popular idea that GS is clinically "preferred" over CS, or that CS is "not necessary,"1 has not been examined (let alone supported) by appropriate comparative research. An analysis of controlled clinical trials evaluated the independent effects of GS and CS in the treatment of OA.2 The authors concluded that the overall efficacy in trials of CS for people with OA exceeded the overall efficacy of GS for people with that condition. |
