Prolonged use of prescription proton pump inhibitors may require vitamin B12 supplementation (up to 1 milligram daily). Extra vitamin C (500 milligrams) and vitamin E (200 IU) may reduce the possible formation of carcinogens (nitrosamines). Cost: $30 to $40 for 42 pills (1 year's supply) Studies published in the Journal of the American Medical Association have suggested that constantly suppressing stomach acid may increase the risk of pneumonia and severe infectious diarrhea.
Calcium supplementation can make a difference in young people, whose bones are still developing. But in postmenopausal women, the evidence is murky. Some studies have shown that 500 to 1,000 milligrams of calcium a day together with 700 to 800 IU of vitamin D can reduce the number of fractures (though this benefit does not extend to the spine) The results of the Women's Health Initiative on this issue were less encouraging. The study was very large, involving more than 36,000 postmenopausal women.
A 3-year study in Israel discovered that patients who had thickening of their carotid arteries (in the neck) could reduce this complication by 30 percent with daily supplementation with pomegranate juice. Their blood pressure also went down.491 Another study found that when hypertensive patients drank 2 ounces of pomegranate juice daily, their systolic blood pressure (the first number in a blood pressure reading) dropped by 8 4Q9 points, on average. If that sounds impressive, the news just keeps getting better.
This is just not relevant for most people in the United States, though, partly because iodine supplementation has been accomplished at the level of the general population. Iodized salt provided the answer to iodine deficiency more than a generation ago, and it is still so widely used that an American would have to be eating quite a bizarre diet to become iodine deficient. Now, if a little is good, wouldn't more be helpful if the thyroid is not working well? Not necessarily. Most endocrinologists discourage people from taking iodine because it can be overdone.

Zinc supplementation appears to be warranted since chronic, marginal deficiency is common, even among healthy adults. Mild-to-severe zinc deficiency might arise as a consequence of poor intake and/or low stomach acid. Zinc deficiency is common, especially among children, adolescents, pregnant and lactating women, and the elderly. Food Sources: Excellent food sources of zinc include oysters, lamb chops, pecans, pumpkin seeds, green peas, white beans, wheat bran, and eggs.

Since this nutrient is required for normal vision, as well as for a healthy heart, supplementation may be worthwhile. A dosage of 500 mg, 3 times a day, was found to normalize low taurine levels in diabetics. The main dietary sources of taurine are meat and fish. Preventing Heart Disease Diabetics are at increased risk of developing heart disease. Many of the nutrients discussed in this chapter may help prevent heart disease. Other important nutrients for the heart include folic acid, zinc, copper, chromium, and coenzyme Q10.

Second, patients often respond better to betaine HC1 supplementation when combined with liver extract. Third, liver extract improves the overall functioning of the liver and helps other digestive functions in the body. Specifically, the liver has three main functions: vascular, secretory, and metabolic. It filters approximately 1450 ml per minute and removes harmful blood products, such as bacteria, endotoxins, and immune complexes, from the circulation. The liver's main secretory function is in synthesizing and secreting bile.
Psychiatric Disorders: Psychiatric patients are another group in which supplementation with thiamin might be beneficial. Up to 30% of all patients entering a psychiatric ward were found to be deficient in thiamin. Another study found that chronic borderline thiamine deficiency was associated with a heightened experience of anxiety among healthy male adults who were not normally anxious individuals. Other Conditions: Other clinical indications for supplementing with thiamin include AIDS, congestive heart failure, and psychiatric disorders.
Migraine and Tension-type Headaches: A systematic review of previous research and published anecdotal reports has demonstrated that intravenous and oral supplementation of niacin is effective at aborting acute migraine headaches and alleviating tension headaches. It is probably an effective prophylactic agent for the prevention of migraine headaches as well. When taken intravenously or orally, niacin causes cutaneous flushing that might abort the acute symptoms of migraine by vasodilating the intracranial vessels, thus preventing the subsequent vasoconstriction of the extracranial vessels.
The patient were divided into 3 groups: Group 1 was given 10 mg of lutein (a carotenoid that prevents oxidative damage to the retina); group 2 was given 10 mg of lutein and additional broad spectrum supplementation with antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals; and group 3 was given a placebo. The results of this study were once again excellent, with lutein or the lutein/broad spectrum group having a marked improvement in visual function (positive changes in macular pigment density, Snellen visual acuity, and contrast sensitivity). Patients who were on placebo had no significant changes.

It is proven that zinc supplementation is essential for the treatment of anorexia.383 Zinc is essential for hormone function of all types and hormone transport in the blood. It helps individuals that are stuck in an anorexic metabolic pattern. In can be helpful for moderate cases of anorexic metabolism, in terms of helping the body to run normally when more food is eaten. We recommend 25 mg - 75 mg of zinc per day to assist in restoring natural balance in any person prone to anorexia metabolic problems.

Maternal methyl donor supplementation shifts coat color of the offspring from yellow to brown, and reduces the incidence of obesity, diabetes and cancer. (Photo courtesy of Jirtle and Waterland ? In the experiment, one group of yellow, obese, agouti mothers received methyl-group-rich supplements available in health food stores: folic acid, vitamin B12, betaine and choline. Methyl-rich supplements were chosen because a number of studies have shown that the methyl chemical group is involved with epigenetic modifications.

Yau at The University of Toronto reported that presurgical supplementation of vitamin E helped the heart pump during the high-risk, 5-hour postoperative period. Controls did not do as well. Psychiatric Disorders: Vitamin E may be working its way into psychiatry following reports that it had a slight effect in decreasing the symptoms of tardive dyskinesia in patients. This aroused some to consider its role there as an antioxidant and its possible effect in decreasing the oxidation of catechol amines to their oxidized derivatives. These are compounds like adrenochrome.

At this point it is very safe to say that any pregnant woman who is overweight, struggles with low-thyroid symptoms, has a history of weight loss issues, or has a family history of weight problems (mother or father), also has a vital need for antioxidant supplementation during pregnancy. This information is every bit as important as the idea of taking folic acid during pregnancy to prevent neural tube defects. LEPTIN'S CHANGING ROLE New scientific breakthroughs center around the changing role of leptin shortly after a child is born.

The recommended intake for I supplementation at that time was 2 drops/day corresponding to 12.5 mg I. This recommendation was still mentioned in the 19th Edition of Remington's Science and Practice of Pharmacy, published in 1995.43 As quoted by Ghent et al, in 1928 an autopsy series reported a 3% incidence of FDB, whereas in a 1973 autopsy report, the incidence of FDB increased markedly to 89%.
Anderson et al also investigated the effect of chromium picolinate supplementation as a sole intervention on parameters of glucose metabolism among type 2 diabetic patients. One hundred and eighty men and women were randomly assigned to groups receiving either a placebo, 100 meg chromium picolinate twice daily, or 500 meg chromium picolinate twice daily. During the trial, subjects continued all medications and were instructed to sustain their normal eating and lifestyle habits.
Based on the above findings, I supplementation should contain both iodine for the mammary tissue and iodide for the thyroid gland. The mammary glands can effectively compete with the thyroid gland for peripheral I. Eskin et al measured the 24 hr. radioiodide uptake in 57 clinically normal breasts, and in 8 clinically abnormal breasts.52 The mean ± SD % uptake was 6.9 ± 0.46% in the normal breasts and 12.5 ± 1 % in abnormal breasts. These means were statistically significant at p <0.005.
It is common knowledge that simple goiter due to I-defi-ciency, if left without I supplementation, will progress to nodular goiter with some of these nodules becoming cancerous.30 Since simple goiter is more common in women than in men, I-deficiency will eventually result in a greater prevalence of thyroid nodules in women and subsequently a greater incidence and prevalence of thyroid cancer.
Paolisso et al conducted a double-blind, randomized, crossover study to test the impact of magnesium supplementation on, among other factors, insulin resistance in elderly individuals. They provided subjects with 4.5 g magnesium daily for 4 weeks, which resulted in a significant increase in erythrocyte magnesium concentrations. This intervention also resulted in an improvement in insulin sensitivity, and this improvement correlated with the improved magnesium status.

Cost: Approximately $4 for 100 pills, or about a 3-month supply "magnesium supplementation seems to be a valuable therapeutic tool in the treatment of pregnancy-related leg cramps."714 Be aware that too much can cause diarrhea, and people with kidney problems should take magnesium only under medical supervision. Some people are equally enthusiastic about calcium for preventing leg cramps. The research that has been done on this remedy has been equivocal. In one study, pregnant women with nighttime leg cramps were given calcium supplements or vitamin C as a "control.

This toxicity is based on the depletion of Q10 from the immune cells and can be prevented by Q10 supplementation.174 Depleting Q10 is not a good idea, period. Science supports the co-administration of Q10 with statins in all cases. Statins provide their benefit by lowering cholesterol. In many cases the same could be accomplished by improving leptin and thyroid function and losing weight. Statin side effects work against the healthy response to exercise and may damage muscle function. Fixing leptin problems enhances muscle function and the health of muscle.
For those who have not been as fortunate, estriol supplementation is a definite option. Any support of female hormones works best with other hormones in a better state of natural balance. Thus, a woman who learns and applies the leptin managing skills of a Health Asset Manager™ will have an easier time keeping female hormones and health intact as she grows older. 39 Thyroid Problems Finally Resolved rhe liver is the metabolic factory of the human body; it is safe to consider it the brain of the physical body. Metabolic rate is largely determined by the rate of activity of the liver.
NUTRITIONAL SUPPLEMENTS AS HEALTHY TOOLS Nutritional supplementation can significantly enhance the production of ATP and the function of UCP3, enabling more efficient weight loss. Activating UCP3 is a safe and effective way to lose weight and reduce obesity.147 How does a person know what they need? Our government has a 10-year lag on clear cut science before even conservatively suggesting vitamins to fortify a given health need.

In addition to improving one's diet and minimizing exposure to toxic chemicals, nutrient supplementation is often important for restoring and maintaining one's health. Numerous studies, described throughout this book, have shown that providing additional quantities of vitamins, minerals, amino acids, or other naturally occurring compounds can help relieve a wide range of symptoms and disorders. Many doctors cling to the belief that the typical diet contains all the nutrients a person needs to stay healthy.

As an added benefit, magnesium supplementation can bring down LDL ("bad") cholesterol and 46-47 bring up HDL ("good") cholesterol, not exactly a bad "side effect"! Alpha Lipoic Acid If there is a supplement other than fish oil that I feel safe recommending for just about everyone, it is alpha lipoic acid. Aside from its impact on blood sugar, insulin sensitivity, and liver health, this superstar nutrient does "double whammy" magic by acting as a powerful antioxidant on its own and by protecting other antioxidants such as vitamins C and E, making it a powerful antiaging nutrient.

Then supplementation will be less necessary. So: please start with vitamin E—the 'mixed tocopherol' type—400 IU daily. There are several studies show that vitamin E lowers heart-attack risk by a very significant percent." "Next, inositol hexanicotinate, 600 milligrams, twice daily. It's helpful for lowering serum cholesterol, and a much safer form of niacin when higher quantities are necessary." "Third, vitamin C. For now, please use 2 grams twice daily. Also, please get a high-potency multiple vitamin/mineral with at least 200 micrograms of chromium and 300 to 400 milligrams of magnesium.
When these deficiencies are corrected by appropriate supplementation, the fatigue and related symptoms often improve considerably. Adrenal hormones, particularly Cortisol, can cause serious side effects if used inappropriately. These hormones should not be used to treat fatigue unless a deficiency is demonstrated. In addition, doctors prescribing Cortisol should be familiar with the work of Dr. William Jefferies, who has been prescribing low doses of Cortisol for more than 30 years without encountering any significant side effects.4 (See chapter 4 for additional discussion of Jefferies' work.

The most effective form of lipoic acid for supplementation is called R alpha lipoic acid. There is also hope for repairing tissue damage that has already been done. We use the enzymes bromelain and papain to help dissolve abnormal tissue protein damage.671672 We combine them with quercetin and curcumin to further reduce inflammation and help turn off excess NF kappaB.673 674,675 We may add a nutrient such as hyaluronic acid. Hyaluronic acid signals genes to help synthesize new cells as well as act as a connective tissue raw material itself.
