With the passing weeks and months of continuing supplementation, the success rate climbed even higher.
Here's another example: Gregory Stefan, in his book In Search of Sanity, recalls being confined to a hospital bed for four years, diagnosed as a hopelessly ill schizophrenic. After being subjected to continuous electroshock therapy and mentally and physically numbing drugs day after day, Stefan had the good fortune to encounter a psychiatrist who used B3 and other nutrients to restore him to a normal, healthy mental state. |

Always consult your doctor or appropriate medical rofessional before making any major dietary changes or taking ny vitamin supplementation. And certainly, I would ask you never to stop or change a treatment your physician has prescribed in favor of vitamin or mineral treatments without firs! consulting him or her—doing so can sometimes be very dangerous. Instead, I hope you will use this book as an addition to your physician's instructions. If you have or can find a physician who also believes in the power of nutrition, so much the better for you. |
Recommendation: Take 50 to 100 mg of B-complex daily to provide sufficient supplementation with all the B vitamins.
• Deficiency of vitamin B12 occurs more often in people suffering depression than it does in "normal" (i.e., not depressed) people. Recommendation: Take sublingual (dissolves under your tongue) vitamin B12 in a dose of 500 micrograms weekly for 4 to 6 weeks, then monthly if you respond with a lightening of your mood. Take a 50 mg tablet of B-complex daily along with your vitamin B12.
• One of the earliest detectable symptoms of deficiency of vitamin C is depression. |
After all, the goal of vitamin and mineral supplementation is to optimize health, not to damage it. With that in mind, I invite you to join me now in exploring the nutritional facts that fill this work. So that you'll get the most benefit from it, let me take just a moment to tell you how to find what you want to know.
How to Use This Book
The book is divided into two main sections. |

A may help prevent cervical neoplasia. Another case-control study of 87 cases and 82 controls demonstrated that with all factots considered, about a threefold greater risk for severe dysplasia or carcinoma was found in women who had lowered vitamin A or beta-carotene intake and nutritional status (Wylie-Rosett et al. 1984). Liu et al. (1995) also found that high plasma levels of vitamin A (retinol) were telated to regression of cervical dysplasia, especially in HPV-16-positive women. Nagata et al. |
NAC and glutathione lowered levels of IL-4 and enhanced T-cell proliferation. Nitric oxide (NO) in expired air is a good indicator of the severity of respiratory diseases such as asthma, emphysema, and cystic fibrosis (Corradi et al. 2001). Glutathione binds with NO to create nitrosothiols (RS-NOS). This binding can help reduce the inflammatory effects of NO. Future studies should give a better picture of how effective this may be.
Magnesium
Magnesium is a mineral utilized by every cell of the body and participates in energy metabolism and protein synthesis. |
Researchers also state that carnitine may provide independent benefit in ischemia, when used as monotherapy, ot additional benefit when used in combination with conventional beta-blockers or calcium antagonists (Jackson 2001). Although research indicates carnitine may be an effective adjunctive therapy, never discontinue catdiac medications without the consent of yout physician.
Carnitine, administered to individuals displaying heart trauma, substantially lessened coronary damage and the risk of occlusion. |
SS, believing that PGE1 can revitalize both teat and salivary glands.
Suggested dosage: The benefits of evening primrose oil may take several months to become noticeable. Mild nausea and an occasional rash are side effects infrequently reported. Although the dosage vaties, a typical recommendation is 2^1 gtams daily, taken with meals.
DHEA: Does It Have a Place in Autoimmune Therapy?
Dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) is a steroid hormone produced by the adrenal glands. |

Toxic effects produced by aflatoxin were significantly diminished by the curcuminoids supplementation.
Interestingly, curcuminoids also play a role in protecting some drugs from physico-chemical degradation. For example, addition of curcumin to the cardiovascular drug nifedipine, prevented degradation of nifedipine due to the ultra-violet light.42 This protective effect increased with increasing concentrations of curcumin in nifedipine preparations. |
The effect of curcumin supplementation on serum lipid peroxides was studied in 10 healthy volunteers, to evaluate the antioxidant property of curcumin in preventing serum lipid peroxidation.18 Administration of curcumin resulted in a statistically significant reduction of serum lipid peroxides formation and a decrease in the level of total cholesterol. These results clearly illustrate the potential role of curcuminoids in the prevention and treatment of cardiovascular disease.
Importantly, curcuminoids have been found both safe and effective antioxidants. |

Tryptophan
Tryptophan supplementation may stimulate the growth of some tumors. Tryptophan depletion has been shown to inhibit leukemia cells in vitro, and chemotherapy agents that deplete tryptophan stores have been investigated in humans (Covington et al, 1990; Waller-stein et al, 1990). Nicotinamide (niacinamide), a form
Lipotropic factors are compounds that promote the transportation and utilization of fats, and help prevent the accumulation of fat in the liver. They include methionine, choline, folic acid, and vitamin B12. |

Although I describe them one by one, phytochemicals work synergistically, not individually. supplementation with individual phytochemicals can actually increase cancer risk.
It is possible to get mega-doses of nutrients without taking pills. For example, 8 oz/250 ml of nettle infusion contains 1,000 mg calcium and 5,000 IU of carotenes. A cup of violet infusion supplies 6,000 IU carotenes. A serving (100 grams) of dandelion leaves contains 60,000 IU carotenes.
The following phytochemicals and nutrients can prevent and reverse the initiation, promotion, and growth of breast cancer. |

The clinical effect of vitamin C supplementation on tumor angiogenesis has not been determined. However, administering high doses of vitamin C to cancer patients did not appear to shorten patient lifespans in clinical trials. Vitamin C is discussed in more detail in Chapter 13.
9 Liberation of bFGF also occurs during tumor invasion, in which tumor-induced collagenases or other proteolytic enzymes degrade the ECM and release heparin from mast cells. Mast cells contain heparin and histamine in intracellular granules.

The elderly could definitely benefit from supplementation, because once you're in your sixties, food intake typically drops, and you're not as active as you used to be," says Judith S. Stern, R.D., Sc.D., professor of nutrition and internal medicine at the University of California, Davis.
Even if you manage to stay active, you can benefit from supplements. "Moderate exercise enhances immunity, but if you're running more than 30 miles a week or doing a lot of other types of exercise, you can actually hurt immunity and be more prone to viruses," says Kenneth H. Cooper, M.D. |

There are many examples of this blindness and, more important, many areas in which supplementation may offer significant relief to people who are suffering from, or are likely to suffer from, serious illnesses. By altering blood-clotting mechanisms, vitamin E exercises a significant effect on preventing dangerous thromboses in deep veins; supplemental magnesium seems quite helpful as a treatment for asthma and cardiovascular disease; and folic acid may help prevent cardiovascular disease as well as neural tube defects in fetuses. |
There are no discussions of the therapeutic use of supplementation, except in the case of the skid-row alcoholic, or the genetically or surgically altered patient or pregnant mother. Questions about "megavi-tamin therapy," Linus Pauling's studies on vitamin C, or reports in the popular press are treated casually by lecturers or even with contempt.
In fact, we have little reason to be so sure of our nutritional ground. |

Minerals and nutrients may also bind with the chelator, so their levels must be carefully checked and controlled through supplementation. Chelation must be done slowly over 3 to 4 hours. Too much fluid at too fast a rate might cause an increase in blood volume and a fluid overload, which could be a problem, particularly in patients with serious heart disease. Oddly enough, the magnesium in the chelation bottle might cause the opposite: a drop in blood pressure. That's why all patients must be closely supervised. |
Carbohydrate supplementation with specific compounds such as the fructoseoliogosaccharides.
• Fiber supplements such as cellulose, psyllium, or pectin.
• Herbal antimicrobials. Useful herbal remedies include extracts from Artemisia annua and citrus seeds, also goldenseal, and a Gentiana or sanguinaria mixture.
• Replenishing normal intestinal flora with the appropriate microorganisms like bifidobacteria, Lactobacillus, and Saccharomyces boulardii.
Leaky Gut Syndrome
Leaky gut syndrome is another condition that can cause problems beyond the immediate digestive organs. |
Oral vitamin B6 and a topical skin application of vitamin B6 cream are helpful, as well as oral supplementation with zinc and flaxseed oil (see chapters 9 and 10 for more on Candida).
I used these successfully with Arthur, who at forty-five had had seborrheic dermatitis almost all his life. His forehead and cheeks were perpetually dry, red, and inflamed. Skin applications of tea-tree oil helped only slightly at first, so skin testing for allergy to Candida and related skin fungi was undertaken. |
It is much better for the health of your skin to think of an "inner facial" consisting of a change to a toxin-free natural foods diet; avoidance of constipation, which causes colon toxicity; and supplementation with essential fatty acids like flaxseed oil and/or primrose oil or borage oil. This can result in dramatic improvements in skin condition in 3 to 4 months. Be patient—it won't happen overnight. Remember that new skin is formed deep under the superficial layer and does not reach the surface until prior skin layers have been sloughed off. |
However, it is a premier antioxidant, and there is some evidence that it can be maintained in the body through supplementation with its amino acid precursor, N-acetyl-cysteine.
Diabetics tend to develop cataracts at an earlier age than others because diabetes accelerates free radical damage. High insulin levels are associated with free radical production and with lipid peroxidation, which is a measure of free radical activity in the blood. There is also a diabetes-specific type of cataract that is caused by the deposition of a sugar called sorbitol in the eye. |

Leg Cramps f there's a more brutal way to wake up than a Monday morning alarm clock, this is it: a knot of pain grabbing your calf with the white-knuckle intensity of a clenched fist.
Nighttime cramps, known as recumbency cramps, usually occur during light sleep and are caused by spasmlike muscular contractions. Other leg cramps occur after exercise, especially if you're dehydrated, overheated or overtired. |

Thus, for such individuals folic acid supplementation is a must.
Garlic
A crisp knowledge of the health benefits of garlic will always prove handy. This is because it is one of the most safe and versatile of all medicinal herbs. Researchers have proven that garlic is enormously valuable for combating a wide range of illnesses. In other words, it is one of those rare substances that is a universal tonic. This means it provides a certain degree of protection for virtually any illness.
Researchers have discovered that garlic is a natural germicide, capable of killing nearly any microbe. |

Yoga
A yoga pose called the knee squeeze (page 612) may help against impotence, according to Alice Christensen, founder and executive director of the American Yoga Association. She recommends combining this exercise with two inverted yoga poses, the easy bridge (page 619) and the cobra (page 622), in a daily routine that should also include breathing exercises (see page 152) and meditation (see page 153). |

So what can you expect from supplementation? More energy? Less stress? Sexual bliss? A longer life? Some supplements promise to do all this and more— everything, it seems, but raise the dead.
Biochemically, vitamins and minerals play key roles in virtually every body system. So, yes, they are involved in energy production, stress responses, sexual enjoyment, and myriad other bodily functions. "But by themselves, supplements won't turn your life around," Somer explains. "They work with good nutrition and a healthy lifestyle. They're valuable, but they won't make all your dreams come true. |
A Shopper's Guide to the Supplement Aisle
The debate over recommended vitamin and mineral intakes will likely continue, as ongoing research turns up more information about the relationship between supplementation and disease prevention. But at least many nutrition experts agree on some basic guidelines for buying and using supplements. Here's their advice.
First and foremost, eat healthfully. They're called supplements for a reason: They're intended to support a nutritious diet, not replace it. They can't undo the damage caused by poor eating habits. |
As scientists learn more about the health benefits of supplementation, public interest has blossomed, too. An estimated 150 million Americans take supplements, with sales topping $4 billion a year.
How Much Is Enough?
Time was when you could find certain supplements only in health food stores. These days, even supermarkets carry a mind-boggling array of brands and doses from which to choose. And many consumers have been left to wonder, "What should I take? And how much?"
The "how much" part is a matter of considerable controversy. |
And each one lends itself to home care through an array of therapies and practices, including the following:
þ Nutrition: Low-fat eating, vegetarianism, supplementation, and elimination diets
þ Exercise: walking, tai chi, qigong, and yoga
þ Stress management: meditation, visualization, biofeedback, massage, and music therapy
þ Connectedness: relationships and support groups
You'll learn more about each of these approaches—as well as practical ways to make them part of your self-care program—in chapters 3 through 15. |
