Knowing this, researchers have been probing to discover the optimal amount of calcium supplementation that most women need. At University Hospital in Ghent, Belgium, doctors found that a calcium intake of 1,500 milligrams a day helped protect postmenopausal women from bone loss. Another study, at Winthrop-University Hospital in Mineola, New York, showed that giving 1,700 milligrams a day of calcium to women who were past menopause significantly slowed their rate of bone loss. |

While I don't recommend megavitamins, I do believe that most everyone needs at least basic supplementation to ensure that their body is getting the necessary vitamins to allow daily metabolic processes to function efficiently and prevent the onset of chronic diseases.
Most people don't eat a diet that is rich or varied enough to supply them with adequate vitamins and minerals. One large study that involved 28,000 people showed that more than 60 percent of the people, regardless of income level, showed at least one symptom of malnutrition. Countless other studies have had similar results. |

Physicians where she had been on life support for ten days refused to administer Q10 because of their lack of knowledge, fear, and bias against nonconventional supplementation.
I treated this woman with 450 mg Q10 daily (in her feeding tube), IV magnesium, antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals. Within a few days she was weaned off the ventilator, eventually walking out of the hospital two weeks later. Although the nursing care was outstanding, I credit her recovery to coenzyme Qi0. Her son believes so as well. |
Thus, high-fiber diets and/or vegetarian diets may require additional mineral supplementation. When taking mineral supplements, it is important to take a multimineral supplement rather than individual minerals, unless recommended by your physician.
Calcium
Calcium is necessary for good bone and tooth development. It also plays a major role in cardiac electrical conduction and in the transmission of impulses through the nerves. Calcium is also necessary for muscle contraction and blood clotting. |
We also studied the harmful effects of alcohol on the body and the uses of B-vitamin supplementation.
However, there was no education about the health hazards posed by processed foods, polluted water, heavy metals, and radiation leaking into the environment. There was minimal education about the perils of vitamin and mineral deficiency. As a young physician, my own understanding of nutrition was very limited; the subject received no emphasis during medical school, internship, medical residency, or even my fellowship in cardiology. |

What does work is calcium supplementation, whicfy releases some of the body's stores of histamine, and the natural amino acid methionine, which helps to detoxify histamine by methy-lation ?the usual mode of detoxification of histamine in the human body. Phenytoin (Dilantin), the antiepilepsy drug, is also an anti-folic acid drug. Phenytoin in a dose of 100 mg, morning and evening, will usually provide some relief for the severely depressed or compulsive patient. However, methionine plus calcium combined with zinc and manganese is often sufficient, so phenytoin can sometimes be omitted. |
This often leads to even worse iron, zinc, and calcium status, unless proper dietary guidance and supplementation are given. Many elderly people have an impaired sense of taste, leading to over-salting of food.
With optimum nutrition I believe senility and memory deterioration will become a thing of the past. As Leonard Larson, president of the American Medical Association in i960, said, "There are no diseases of the aged, but simply diseases among the aged. |
The avoidance of chocolate, nuts, and thiamine, and supplementation with L-lysine also-help get rid of herpes. Psoriasis is characterized by a high serum copper level, so this may also respond to continued zinc and B6 therapy. The effective treatment of severe skin disease may require as much as 60 mg of zinc given two or three times per day, but this sort of dose should be taken only under superivision.
Summary
The careful study of people of all ages will find that about 10 percent of a normal population have pyroluria that can cause symptoms when the patient is stressed. |
For instance, arthritis, which limits the use of joints, responds to zinc supplementation and so does the worry associated with the condition. The doctors who treat these diseases are practicing orthomolecular medicine, but sadly, the nutrition-oriented medical practitioner is a rare bird.
The type of treatment offered by orthomolecular doctors varies, but the mainstream of work focuses upon meganutrient therapy after careful diagnostic test. Treatment with adequate nutrients is the distinguishing characteristic of orthomolecular medicine. |

In one small study, researchers in Canada gave selenium and vitamin E supplements to infertile men for six months. With supplementation, the men showed significant increases in sperm motility, percentage of live sperm, and percentage of normal sperm cells. The researchers concluded that these improvements were due to the supplements because all three benefits faded later when the men stopped taking them.
Vitamin C helps to keep sperm cells from clumping together. When sperm cells clump, they aren't able to move very well. |
Another study published two years later looked at the effects of vitamin E alone, but this time, there was no benefit from supplementation. Researchers believe they can explain the apparently contradictory results by the fact that antioxidants, particularly vitamins C and E, work much better in tandem.

Nutrient supplementation cannot be stressed enough; thank God more and more companies are coming out with quality products. One that I recommend, as I have already mentioned is Barleygreen because it not only provides powerful nutritional value, it has wonderful, natural cleansing agents that help each and every cell function better. Dr. Mary Ruth Swope, a major proponent of AIM International's Barleygreen, shares in her book, Green Leaves Of Barley, "The juice from green barley leaves is definitely one of the best general detoxifiers. |

Type 2 is the kind of diabetes that typically affects people in their forties, fifties, or sixties rather than being a lifelong problem. supplementation, experts say, may partly reverse some of type 2's effects.

We should be eager to eat fruits and vegetables, since we automatically benefit from the protective qualities of their phytochemicals, but supplementation with products like Preven-Ca, Barley green and other quality products is advisable.
Alkaline Water
We can assist phytochemicals by drinking alkaline substances which provide negative ions. In Chapter One, we spoke about the dangers of failing to maintain a proper pH. I don't believe that there is any bodily process more sophisticated than the maintenance of an adequate level of pH in the blood. |

In another study, researchers at Pennsylvania State University investigated the influence of creatine supplementation on muscle performance during repeated sets of high-intensity resistance exercise. In this study, 14 men were randomly assigned to a creatine or a placebo group. Both groups performed bench presses and jump squats before and after taking either 25 grams of creatine or a placebo.
At the end of the test period, researchers found that performance was unchanged for the men in the placebo group. |

But is supplementation the only way to correct this problem?
Anyone who adopts a low-carbohydrate nutritional program for any appreciable length of time will notice many changes in her body that can be attributed partially to increases in growth hormone. Over time, fat is reduced and muscle begins to increase, even in the absence of exercise. With exercise, the increase in muscle is very rapid. Fingernails grow faster and hair growth responds as well. While one may not regain hair that is lost, usually the receding hairline stops. |
In addition, the levels of lactate dehydrogenase were lower in the L-carnitine group after just one week of supplementation. Lactate dehydrogenase is the enzyme that intercepts pyruvate and reduces it to lactate before it can move into the mitochondria. This is the way that bacteria and our cells produce energy in the absence of oxygen. Lower amounts of this enzyme means mitochondria are functioning better through aerobic metabolism.
Some very interesting recently published data indicate that L-carnitine may also play a role in Type 2 diabetes and insulin resistance. |
However, long-term supplementation is not required for those on a low-carbohydrate diet; meat supplies ample amounts of L-carnitine. Moreover, since the anabolic over-

The promoters of low-protein diets remain oblivious to many factors, but most important is that no amount of supplementation can substitute for the balance of fat and protein that is obtained from animal foods, the way nature intended.
However, we do not promote a protein-only diet: Fat must be included. The most prevalent argument against high protein in the diet is that kidney function can be compromised. This is probably a reference to data published many years ago, which indicated if someone already has a kidney disease, then amino acids can exacerbate the condition. |
These vitamin-like substances can be made in the body or obtained from the diet, whereas vitamins can be obtained only from the diet (or via diet supplementation).
Several cofactors are worth mentioning here because they perform extremely important functions, and because they are primarily found in animal foods.
L-Carnitine
L-carnitine is an amino acid required to transport medium- and long-chain fatty acids into the mitochondria. It's generally believed that fatty acid molecules greater than about ten carbon atoms in length require L-carnitine in order to travel into the mitochondria. |

Thus vitamin and mineral supplementation is critical in this population.
As vitamin D is a fat-soluble vitamin and is stored by the body, it may be toxic if taken in megadoses. This can be particularly serious in children or individuals with kidney disease. Certain drugs, such as steroid hormones, interfere with the action of vitamin D in the intestines; others, such as cholesterol-lowering drugs, may also interfere with the absorption of vitamin D. The dietary sources of vitamin D include fish oils and ocean fish, particularly fatty fish like halibut, salmon, mackerel, and blue-fish. |

Some research suggests that vitamin B6 supplementation can also decrease cramps if you're deficient in it, says Dr. Silbert.
Best of all, there's a little test that you can do to see if you may be lacking this vitamin, says Dr. Moore. Before you get out of bed, try to curl your fingers down to touch your palm where your fingers join. Your fingers should be as curled up as you can get them in this position, she says. If you can't bend your fingers enough to make them touch your palm, you should probably consider taking B6, she says.
Taking 50 milligrams of B6 twice a day should help, says Dr. |

Similar studies conducted in rats reported approximately 20% reduction of lifetime malignant tumor incidence, and many of the tumors observed in the animals whose diets were restricted appeared only when most of the rats fed ad libitum had died. |

Also, any B vitamin taken in large doses by itself, without the supplementation of the remaining complex, may create a dangerous state of imbalance.
Who Needs B Vitamins?
We all need B vitamins—all of them—every day. But there are circumstances under which we need the vitamin B family even more. For example, if you drink a lot of coffee, tea, or alcohol, perspire heavily, are under any sort of stress up to the point of being emotionally disturbed or even mentally ill, your needs for the B-vitamin complex may be greatly increased.
The B vitamins are water soluble. |
And tocopherol may be decreased in adults who consume too much PUFA over an extended period—without vitamin E supplementation.108
Your red blood cell membrane is rich in PUFAs, but if your body levels of vitamin E get too low, these membranes can literally burst. Low levels spell other trouble besides. Hemolysis—resulting in low levels of all fats in your blood and symptoms of aging—usually goes hand in hand with vitamin E deficiency. |
Further proof that lecithin lives up to its reputation: in six weeks' time, cholesterol levels rose 14 percent when participants ceased supplementation.80
• Take vitamin C when you have your daily lecithin "sprinkles." This combination helps to speed up the process by which cholesterol is made soluble and flushed from the system.
• Ascorbic acid and this soy-based antioxidant have in common the fact that both agents render cholesterol less harmful. Both help to keep cholesterol at normal levels in the body. |

They found a 15% improvement in 5-year survival compared to patients who did not receive the supplement, and found no side effects from the supplementation. The theoretical basis for the study was animal experiments showing that healthy animals subjected to whole body radiation, or animals carrying tumors, developed tryptophan metabolism disorders that resembled those created by vitamin B6 deficiency states. In humans, these metabolic disorders resembling vitamin B6 deficiency states are found in Hodgkin's disease, and bladder and breast cancer. |
