Choline supplementation during pre- and postnatal development in animals produces marked improvements in memory that last into adulthood, while people suffering from memory loss who are given choline supplemenrs sometimes show improvements in short-term memory and absrract thinking. The best dietary sources of choline are wheat germ, egg yolks, liver, peanurs and peanut butter, and brewer's yeast. Small amounts of choline are found in potatoes, tomatoes, whole wheat bread, milk, oranges, cauliflower, and cucumbers.
If choline supplementation is effective at all, it probably is most useful in the early stages of memory loss before pronounced structural changes in the brain produce irreversible damage. Choline supplemenration always should be discussed with a physician. In addition, it can produce side effects, such as diarrhea, and is not advised in certain psychological conditions. For example, manic depressives should not supplement with choline, since the nutrient can aggravate the depressive phase of the illness. Phosphatidyl What?
Therefore, a responsible supplementation program offers safe and potentially beneficial nutrirional insurance. (See chapter 14 for guidelines on how to select a supplement. See "The Feeling Good Diet: Step 2," on page 275.) The Tortoise and the Hare "But, I want to feel good right now! Why can't I just move ahead to Step 3 and skip all the in-between dietary advice?" It is not dieting per se but how you adopt new eating habits that determines how successfully you will stick with a new eating plan.
Side effects of DHEA supplementation include acne and an increased risk for prostate cancer aggressiveness, and liver damage. DHEA is not regulated by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), so there are no guarantees of product safety or efficacy. One study found that only seven out of sixteen DHEA products tested contained the amount of DHEA listed on their labels; the rest contained little or no DHEA or contained dosages exceeding safety levels. Ginkgo biloba: Ginkgo biloba might help increase oxygen flow to the brain and protect brain tissue from free-radical damage.

A study by Canadian researchers suggests that dietary supplementation of vitamins C and E can reduce your risk of cataracts by at least 50 percent. Paul F. Jacques, Sc.D., an epidemiologist at the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Human Nutrition Research Center on Aging at Tufts University in Boston, has found another link between lower antioxidant levels and cataracts. In one study, he observed that the risk of developing cataracts was five times higher in people with "lower levels of all types of carotene, including beta-carotene," in their blood. Dr.

Viramin Bl supplementation, for example, reduced the need for daytime naps, improved sleep patterns, and increased activity levels in eighty healthy seniors studied at the University of California, Davis. In some cases, the vitamin corrects a marginal deficiency and is only effective for people who are consuming vitamin-poor diets, while in other cases the vitamin appears to work at larger doses despite apparent adequate dietary intake.

Typically, treatments for allergy sufferers include drugs, the avoidance of all allergic triggers, and dietary changes (some of them very rigorous and lasting for months), along with immune-enhancing measures such as nutritional and herbal supplementation, homeopathy, and acupuncture. But even when the treatments prove successful, patients usually have to diligently monitor or avoid their exposure to the known foods or environmental triggers that caused their illness in the first place. Such vigilance often must last a lifetime. See Environmental Medicine. Dr.

One would assume, since they have the same composition, that the blood-brain barrier would likewise be strengthened by flavone-flavanone supplementation. In general, these compounds are relatively cheap and non-toxic. It would be worthwhile to supplement those in danger of barrier disruption, such as hypertensives, diabetics and those with multiple sclerosis. Two of the flavanone substances are of particular interest, quercetin and hesperidin. Both have been shown to be significant inhibitors of the eicosanoid generating enzyme delta lipoxygenase.
As for bioavailability, following dietary supplementation, both alpha-lipoic acid and DHLA increase in all tissues. Besides its function as a free radical scavenger and regenerator of other antioxidants, alpha-lipoic acid has also been shown to enhance glucose transport into cells as well, even without insulin. Normally glucose cannot enter a cell, except in the brain, unless insulin is present. What makes this especially important is that this could play a vital role in treating both forms of diabetes, type I or juvenile onset, and type II, adult onset.
Studies on patients having this disorder have shown that the majority have shown significant improvement of their symptoms on alpha lipoic acid supplementation. Cataracts are known to be related to free radical damage to the lens of the eye. Experimental studies, using chemicals that induce cataracts in rats, demonstrated that alpha-lipoic acid prevented cataract formation.46 Examination of the lenses of the supplemented animals also demonstrated significant elevations in glutathione, ascorbate, and vitamin E.
In one study of memory loss seen in aging mice, alpha-lipoic acid supplementation improved performance to such an extent that twenty-four hours later the aged animals were performing better than the young animals.47 Yet, when given to the younger animals it did not improve their memory. It is tempting to think that the improved mental function in the aged brain may be secondary to the improved passage of glucose into the brain past dysfunctional glucose transporters.
If it is, then a case can be made for recommending dietary supplementation with magnesium and rigorous control of aluminum intake. There are several conditions in which magnesium deficiency is common. These include alcoholism, chronic diarrhea, renal disease, chronic use of diuretics, diabetes, and it is commonly seen in a high percentage of patients undergoing cardiac surgery 436 There is another interesting piece of this puzzle that bears mentioning.

For some people over 70 years old, supplementation may make sense. When supplements are used, the nutrients in the table should be present in any multivitamin or multimineral preparation you choose. For individual recommendations tailored to unique needs, the advice and counsel of a physician or trained, registered dietitian is helpful. This restriction of information comes despite the fact that large-scale independent studies have shown that many Americans, especially the elderly, are suffering from nutritional deficits that could be corrected by dietary supplementation. • Manufacturers of nutritional supplements and herbs, as well as health food stores, have been the target of FDA seizures in an attempt to block the manufacture and sale of numerous natural substances whose therapeutic effects have been scientifically validated. These strong-arm tactics are being used despite the estimate of former Surgeon General c.
Huggins, the basic supplementation program aids in the excretion of mercury from the cells, prevents the exacerbation of symptoms, and provides the patient with a nutrient base for rebuilding damaged tissues. Dr. Huggins relies upon blood chemistries, complete blood count, urinalysis, hair analysis, and other biological testing to determine what supplements a patient might require to attain a balanced chemistry. He then uses follow-up tests to determine if the supplement doses are correct or need to be adjusted.
In 1985, the American Dental Association's Council on Scientific Affairs recommended that no fluoride supplementation should be given to babies from birth to six months of age, even if the local public water supply had not been fluoridated.29 "This begs a very important question," Dr. Levy says. "How can any community fluoridate its public water supply and still protect all the babies under six months of age, as currently advised by the ADA?

As a result, blood levels of vitamins increased within three months, and mood improved within one year of supplementation. Men and women reported that they felt "more agreeable"; the women also felt more composed and generally in better mental health when taking daily supplements. Appropriate screening tests including hair and serum testing should be done to check selenium levels and supplementation with selenium is important, when it is indicated. Cadmium Cadmium is an industrial pollutant. Cadmium toxicity can cause high blood pressure, anemia, and kidney and liver damage. It can also impair calcium absorption and influence the development of osteoporosis. Sources of cadmium include industrial waste, auto exhaust and cigarette smoke. It can also be found in some refined foods (especially white flour and rice), fertilizers, batteries, and sewage sludge.

The prevailing attitude held that supplementation was unnecessary because a balanced diet was supposed to provide all the good nutrition our bodies needed. For decades, only a small minority of nutritionally oriented physicians advocated supplements as a potent, safe, and inexpensive way to help treat illness and create optimum health. Current nutritional research has weakened the conventional viewpoint and supported the minority idea. For one thing, nutritionists acknowledge that huge numbers of people fail to eat anything resembling a balanced or nutritionally sound diet.

Chances are, with a little expert guidance, you will be able to replenish your stores of vitamins and minerals, discover the nutrients that you are characteristically liable to use and need most, and get established on a diet that will sustain you with only limited and/or intermittent supplementation. Nutrients in pill form are, after all, only adjuncts to a diet. They are supplements, not substitutes. There is no way that fragmented nutrients can replace whole foods—despite sci-fi fantasies or industry hype to the contrary.
Summer is a great time to do this, because generally you'll get more fresh fruits and vegetables, sunshine, and fresh air then, and as a result you'll need less supplementation. And since you don't wear a computerized intravenous dispenser, you are doomed to dose yourself in a way that is not precise. The stuff you take in that isn't needed must be gotten rid of. Give your body a chance to flush it all out. Third, make peace with the fact that you've probably had multiple minor deficiences for years.

Next, base supplementation on your specific symptoms and adjust your dosage according to how those symptoms change after you begin taking supplements. Allow about a month for changes to occur. To nourish the cells of your body for optimal function: ?Read labels. Avoid foods that contain added sugar (including dextrose and corn sweetener), salt, or fat (including partially hydrogenated vegetable oils). ?Eat at least three servings of vegetables and two servings of fruit a day (iceberg lettuce, potatoes, and cucumbers should not be counted as vegetables, or you shortchange yourself). ?
I generally reserve GLA supplements for people whose dryness does not respond to omega-three supplementation. Because the omega-three and omega-six EFAs compete with one another in the body, feeding fish oil to a person who needs GLA may actually increase that person's omega-six deficit, making the skin dryer or the breasts more tender. An increase in these symptoms with omega-three supplements is almost surely a sign to switch to GLA. Lack of response is usually a reason to add GLA.
I have seen many patients with MS who showed no response to the Swank diet or any EFA supplementation. Primrose oil is a treatment for Linda; it meets her own, individual metabolic needs, and in so doing it provides her with a chemical balance that reverses both the symptoms and signs of neurologic damage. The right nutritionist will help you determine if your diet includes the correct balance of EFAs and antioxidants. Level Three: Balancing Calcium with Magnesium Magnesium is the fourth most abundant mineral in the body. Calcium is the most abundant.
These people often benefit from calcium supplementation. It seems paradoxical that taking calcium should have the same effect for some people that taking magnesium has for others. There are elements of balance that are hard to measure or even to understand. Calcium supplements have been shown to be capable of lowering blood pressure, even though the effect of raising the calcium concentration in blood is to raise blood pressure.

Finally, the macrobiotic diet, like other vegetarian diets, requires supplementation to balance its deficiencies. A properly supplemented macrobiotic diet has benefits. Dietary supplementation with coenzyme Qio in the range of thirty to two hundred milligrams per day has been of benefit to patients with high blood pressure, heart failure, angina, gingivitis, and chronic fatigue. In experimental animals, ubiquinone protects the liver from the effects of injected bacterial toxins. Its role in human detoxification can at present only be surmised from its known antioxidant effects in mitochondria.81 The hazards of detoxification require more protection than can be offered by antioxidants alone, however.
