Pancreatic Enzyme Supplementation: We find dessicated pancreas substances to be an effective supplement.1 The dietary restrictions prescribed by Dr. Richardson are for those who have cancer. It is not recommended for healthy persons because it is unnecessarily restrictive. For those who do not have cancer, a general diet containing foods rich in nitriloside content should be adequate.2 Here is what Dr. Krebs suggests: 1. It is known that people with diabetes have difficulty converting omega-6 oils into GLA, making supplementation important. Over time, a lack of GLA and its metabolites decreases the flow of blood and oxygen to the nerve cells, causing tissue damage. Because essential fatty acids are vital to the structure of cell membranes, a lack of GLA affects the ability of nerve cell membranes to regulate the flow of substances in and out of the cells. Essential fatty acids are also required for normal conduction of electrical impulses.

Preliminary clinical research shows that EPO supplementation can significantly improve symptoms of nerve damage caused by diabetes (technically known as diabetic neuropathy). This could be a remarkable breakthrough for the estimated one-third of people with diabetes who are affected by this complication, which may lead to serious nerve problems in the arms and legs. Researchers do not yet know how many other health conditions may be related to impaired metabolism of GLA.

One group had been taking standardized garlic powder supplements daily for at least 2 years in doses ranging from 300 mg to 900 mg a day, and the other reported no garlic supplementation. The subjects were also subdivided into three groups based on their level of reported garlic intake, in order to see if different dosages had any effect on improvements in aortic elasticity. Aortic elasticity was assessed with measurements of cardiovascular function known as pulse wave velocity (PWV) and elastic vascular resistance (EVR).

Additional preventive daily supplementation may include 1,000 mg vitamin C and 25,000 units of beta carotene. To catch the condition early, Dr. Hudson stresses yearly Pap smear exams. Statistics show that the longer women wait between Pap smears, the higher the incidence of cervical dysplasia and cervical cancer. DIAGNOSIS Before treatment, it is essential to get fully diagnosed to determine the stage of the illness. If a woman has an abnormal Pap smear, her partner needs to be examined by a urologist for warty tissue.
Physical exercise is another key to lifting depression among women, especially when accompanied by a nutritious diet, meditation, and vitamin and mineral supplementation. According to Dr. William J. Goldwag, the medical director of the Center for Preventive/Holistic Medicine, in southern California, exercise is one of the most profound aids in the treatment of depression: "One of the major errors in the thinking of patients and therapists is the notion that in order to be active, you have to feel better. This is exactly contrary to our approach.

Patients with primary biliary cirrhosis who received supplementation with 25,000 to 50,000 IU of vitamin A per day for four to twelve weeks experienced normalization of serum vitamin A levels and subsequent significant improvements in dark adaptation. Vitamin A has protected against liver damage in animals as well. Vitamin A was an effective agent for reversing the inhibition of cell-mediated immunity in burned mice. Other types of supplementation that have been shown to help in recent studies include vitamin E, magnesium, biotin, powdered fenugreek seed, and the juice, seeds, or dried fruit of bitter melon. Yoga and biofeedback therapy have also been shown to help. (See below.) NUTRITION/DIET Diabetes mellitus is the third leading cause of death in the United States and is responsible for 12 percent of all new cases of blindness, 25 percent of all cases of end-stage renal disease, and 40 percent of all nontraumatic amputations of the feet and legs among adults.

Please note that B6 supplementation can affect nursing, so I don't recommend taking it after the first three months of pregnancy. Another approach that's helped some of my patients is taking ginger supplements. People have long relied on ginger for upset stomachs; it's also useful for seasickness. It's particularly appealing to pregnant women because it has none of the side effects that drug treatment can have. You can get ginger capsules at health food stores. There are acupressure points on the wrist that are called "neiguan.
I suggest that patients who suffer regularly from tendinitis and bursitis take regular vitamin C supplementation. Vitamin A in the form of beta-carotene is also critical to tissue repair. It's best taken with zinc, which works in conjunction with vitamin A to repair tissue and reduce inflammation. Vitamin E and selenium work together to limit inflammation and speed healing. Natural Prescription for Tendinitis and Bursitis FOR ACUTE PAIN: • Immediately after injury, for up to five days and sometimes longer, use the RICE technique as described above.
There's some evidence that patients who have tinnitus may require extra supplementation. Calcium is another supplement that can help relieve tinnitus. Ginko biloba has also been helpful. Relaxation techniques seem to be very helpful; they don't stop the noise but they make it much easier to live with. I've had patients who, despite every effort at eliminating tinnitus, have been unsuccessful. However, they found that when they adopted specific techniques for controlling stress, the tinnitus was much easier to tolerate (see Stress Control, page 314).

These women were given 80 mg daily of soy phytoestrogens or placebo for 2 months. The authots concluded that soy phytoestrogens demonstrated greater estrogenic hormonal activity and reduced hot flashes compared to placebo. Howevet, not all studies support the clinically positive effects of phytoestrogens. Most studies are in agreement that soy intake at levels of greatet than 50 mg/day will increase bone mass and will lower low-density cholesterol and triglycerides (Wagner et al. 1997; St. Getmain et al.

Keep vitamin C supplementation below 2,000 mg. daily. • Avoid naturally carbonated and mineral waters; their calcium content can be high. • Eat foods that are rich in magnesium such as barley, bran, corn, buckwheat, rye, oats, brown rice, potatoes, and bananas. • Reduce animal protein in the diet to 3 ounces at lunch and 3 ounces at dinner. • Reduce foods rich in calcium such as milk and cheese. • Cut back on salt, sugar, caffeine, and alcohol. • Eat lots of fruits and vegetables.

Vaccination The Issue of Our Times

Research in 1990 again reported the effectiveness of vitamin A supplementation in reducing morbidity and mortality (JAMA, 17 February 1993, p. 898). Why has the medical profession ignored that information for more than 60 years? Vaccine advocates knew as early as 1985 that mmr immunity waned, and they used the "resurgence" of measles, even in vaccinated people, to convince lawmakers to mandate a second dose. It was easier to do this than to admit a possible policy mistake and truly spend time on hearings to reevaluate vaccination policy.

Request msg-free foods in restaurants or, if you consume foods with msg, increase vitamin B6 supplementation for several days. Also avoid food additives and colorings, sugar, and alcohol. • Watch out for excessive consumption of dairy products. Cow's milk products are high in salt, fat, and naturally occurring milk sugar. They are often the source of food allergies/sensitivities and are potentially high in edcs, especially cheese. Dark leafy greens, raw seeds and nuts, and soy products are better sources of calcium. • Try goat's milk products. Why?
Consume brussels sprouts, dark leafy greens, and broccoli with vitamin C-rich foods and/or vitamin C supplementation. Fatigue • paba • nutrients that support the adrenals such as vitamin C and pantothenic acid.
There is also some evidence that dhea supplementation is of value in the prevention and treatment of osteoporosis. Higher dhea levels are associated with denser bones and several studies suggest it helps maintain bone mass. It appears that dhea is able to enhance bone formation while it puts the brakes on bone resorption. Women going through menopause usually have lower levels of dhea than premenopausal women, and women with most types of breast cancer have been found to have abnormally low levels of dhea.

A study examined the effect of vitamin E supplementation in non-insulin-dependent diabetics with proliferative retinopathy. Vitamin E was found to inhibit ADP-induced platelet aggregation in a dose-dependent manner. Significantly more inhibition was observed in diabetic platelets than in the control platelets when vitamin E was supplemented in amounts small enough to be considered physiological doses in vivo.

Research has demonstrated, for instance, that vitamin E supplementation combats arterial plaque formation and enhances immune function. Contemporary studies have backed the clinical observations of Canadian physicians Wilfrid and Evan Shute, first made more than fifty years ago, that vitamin E helped ailing hearts. While the medical community shunned the Shute brothers, it was their persistent reporting of positive, and often dramatic experiences with patients, that led to the popularity of vitamin E today.

High-density protein foods, vitamin and mineral supplementation, and large amounts of water will be needed to balance the intake of refined sugar. A low-protein or vegetarian diet that includes a high proportion of sugar-sweetened foods can thus cause a serious nutritional deficiency. Considering water alone, it is interesting to note that if we eat 100 grams, or 100,000 milligrams (about 3.5 ounces or 9 tablespoons) of pure refined sugar, theoretically we need about 28 to 30 ounces—almost a quart—of water to counterbalance it. Did you ever notice that sweets make you thirsty?
This is a distinction it shares with vegetarianism, macrobiotics, high-protein diets, supplementation programs, and the rest of the theoretical approaches to food. They all distinguish between a wrong and a right way of eating, thereby creating the notion of nutritional sin, as well as salvation. The R. A.D. has two aspects: a quantitative and a qualitative one. It recommends certain quantities of nutrient elements and also certain qualities of foods, or "food groups.
It wouldn't be necessary then to resort to injections or supplementation (as many vegetarians do), unless there was a problem of malabsorption. My own experience corroborates this. Although I have not been a pure vegetarian, since 1964 I've been eating mostly grains, beans, vegetables, miso, natural soy sauce, some seaweed, fruit, nuts, and either fish, eggs, or chicken once or twice a week. No meat, no liver, almost no milk products.
Paavo Airola, a staunch supporter of supplementation, strongly recommended discontinuing it while fasting.9 Medication poses a problem because the body becomes supersensitive while fasting, and side effects can become quite pronounced. Fasting is not advisable during pregnancy or breast-feeding because food-energy supply to the baby will also diminish. (I tried fasting for a day or two at different times when I was nursing my children, to repair some minor cold or dietary indiscretion; invariably the babies protested, although my milk supply itself didn't seem to have decreased.
