The next part of the dietary approach is supplementation. Please understand that the amounts that follow are not necessarily meant to be taken on an everyday basis, nor are they a specific program for nutritional support in any given condition. They comprise nothing more than a shotgun approach (at times, shotguns can be mighty handy things to have). Keep in mind that these amounts are for adults on a daily basis, not for children.

MEDICAL CONDITIONS THAT PROMOTE NEURODEGENERATION
Alzheimer's disease is the medical condition most frequently associated with damage to or degeneration of the brain, with resulting cognitive dysfunction. However, there are several other common medical conditions not generally associated with the brain that are known to increase the risk of memory loss and dementia. |

Consider supplementation with coenzyme Q ro (ubiquinone), which helps support enzyme detoxification. It has known antioxidant effects in the energy centers of cells (mitochondria, where the P-450 enzyme system lives). Coenzyme Q10 is a nutritional supplement found in health-food stores and pharmacies.
Consume foods high in amino acids found in animal products or in nuts, seeds, and beans. Two amino acids—cysteine and methionine—are converted into glutathione, which is an important detoxifier and antioxidant.

A very large percentage of people with rheumatoid, both adults and youngsters, benefit from supplementation. In many cases, improvement is felt within a few days, making MSM a potent and attractive palliative option.
Many individuals report dramatic results. People have told me they started MSM after their rheumatologists could no longer help them and then returned months later to their surprised physicians appearing rejuvenated and virtually symptom-free.
The most severe case I personally treated involved a lawyer in his late fifties with advanced disease in his shoulders, knees, and hips. |
She experienced significant relief with supplementation alone.
Usually I find that IC patients don't have just bladder or urinary symptoms alone, but instead suffer multiple problems throughout the body, such as musculo-skeletal disability, intestinal irregularities, depression, and overwhelming fatigue. I have concluded that IC is not an illness localized in the bladder but rather is part of a systemic disotder.
Barbara Norman often felt fatigued, depressed, and sick, as if she had a "flu." "It wasn't just an isolated pain that you could try to ignore and life goes on around it," she says. |
These are not minimal cases of pain and discomfort. MSM supplementation has provided significant improvement—less pain, less stiffness, greater mobility.
Some years ago I conducted a clinical experiment to compare the effect of MSM and NSAIDs. In the study, twelve female arthritic patients were randomly assigned to take a moderate dosage of 600 milligrams of Motrin three times daily. Motrin is a popular NSAID. Another twelve women were assigned to rake 6 grams (6,000 milligrams) of MSM daily. |

Says Olson, "Fish oil supplementation in late pregnancy seems to delay delivery, without affecting the continued growth of the fetus. Our findings suggest an easy and cheap intervention to prevent pre-term delivery."
Omega-3 Fatty Acids: Critical in Brain Development
• Omega-3 fatty acids are concentrated in breast milk (but not in U.S. formula).
• DETA and EPA are abundant essential lipids in the brain.
• EPA is converted into the powerful signaling molecules, the eicosanoids, which are crucial to brain function.
• DETA and EPA are incorporated into neuronal membranes. |
Because infant formula is deficient in omega-3 fatty acids compared to breast milk, bottle feeding without omega-3 supplementation may exacerbate a metabolic imbalance already in place.
The Sheffield group has also conducted the only double-blind, placebo-controlled study on omega-3 fatty acids and schizophrenia to date. This preliminary trial compared an EPA-enriched oil, a DHA-enriched oil, and a corn-oil placebo in the treatment of forty-five schizophrenic patients resistant to treatment with conventional antipsychotic medication. |
Pregnant women should let their doctors know if they are considering omega-3 fatty acid supplementation. It is important to note that so far, no more than 3.5 grams per day of EPA and DHA combined, have been given to pregnant women in research studies. Nevertheless, Eskimo women traditionally consume an average of 400 grams of seal and fish per day (slightly less than a pound). This translates into 14 grams of EPA and DHA daily.

DHA remains the most important brain fat throughout life. Low levels of DHA are associated with an increased risk of memory loss. Dr. Michael A. Schmidt reports in Smart Fats that, according to data collected in the long-term Framingham Heart Study, adults with low levels of DHA have a greater likelihood of developing dementia in their later years. Other studies have indicated these adults are twice as likely to develop dementia as those with high levels of DHA. |
In this study, researchers obtained EEG recordings of volunteers before they began taking DMAE or a placebo, and again after twelve weeks of supplementation. There were no changes in the brain waves of the subjects taking the placebo. In those taking DMAE, however, improvements were seen in the frontal and temporal lobes, areas of the brain that play an important role in attention, memory, and flexibility in thinking.
DMAE is sold over the counter in health food stores. |

Getting the right amount of vitamin D can be tricky for adults. Dermatologists tell us to use sunscreen at all times, since the sun causes premature aging of the skin and skin cancer. Yet, this virtually eliminates vitamin D production in the skin; an SPF of 8 cuts vitamin D production by 95 percent.59 Moreover, if you live much north of Los Angeles (e.g. |

For the health of your brain, daily supplementation of DHA is recommended from one of the following sources:

Q 1,000-milligram capsule of fish oil, twice a day. cup freshly ground flaxseed, or ll/2 to 3 tablespoons of flaxseed oil daily.

However, after the research was completed, author Margit Hamosh concluded, "Supplementation with [essential fats] is probably indicated for preterm infants, although long-term effects are not known and studies to assess toxicity have not been performed . . ."35
Research articles sent from Ross Laboratories acknowledge that there is a difference between breast- and bottle-fed babies,36 yet their position is that infants are fully capable of synthesizing the proper fatty acids in their livers. That may be true, at least to some degree. |
He goes on to say that supplementation may not even be necessary if juveniles are counseled to take responsibility for selecting a good diet, and that "the literature suggests that about a 45% reduction in violence is possible by diet change alone."33
The implications of this informarion are frightening and hopeful. What would happen if we turned our backs on the American food culture and fed our children wholesome foods that feed their brains? |

Recovery from stroke and head wounds taught us long ago that the brain has a great deal of plasticity; that is, it can reorganize so that undamaged regions take over tasks formerly done by the lost cells. supplementation of this ability with even a small amount of regeneration might make recovery nearly complete for many brain-damaged people. For the first time in history, neurologists can hope to progress from describing the brain and cord to mending them. As Geoffrey Raisman of London's Laboratory of Neurobiology recently reminded his colleagues: ". . . |

PHOSPHOLIPIDS
Phospholipids, also known as phosphatides, differ from other fats in that they contain a phosphate group, which is attached to the fatty acid—hence the name, phospholipid. Phospholipids form the membranes that surround every cell. They serve as the cell's structural support and create a barrier that protects it. Phospholipids also act as sentries, controlling what goes into and out of a cell. |
