PREVENTION
¦ Regular supplementation with probiotic bacteria is the most effective way of protecting your body against the development of ulcers caused by H. pylori bacteria. Acidophilus and bifidobacteria can destroy many dangerous organisms before they can create problems.
¦ Avoid stress as much as possible. Although it is now known that stress itself does not cause ulcers, stress does cause the body to increase production of the stomach acids that irritate an ulcer. |

The most successful and popular drug withdrawal and rehabilitation programs for both illegal and legal substances always include a vitamin and mineral supplementation and exercise program (generally walking). They recommend using the most natural vitamin supplement possible. (See list of sources at end of chapter.) The reason for this is most likely that with the natural vitamins there are no artificial substances which would interact and possibly cause an interaction with the drug residue in the patient's system. Vitamin C is always listed as the most critical ingredient these programs use. |

An important study in the journal CIRCULATION showed that arginine supplementation over time was followed by decrease in size of the arteriosclerotic plaque.
Because of the beneficial effects on arterial plaques, lowering of blood pressure in hypertensive patients, increasing the output of nitrous oxide which protects arteries from plaque formation, increase in the output of growth hormone and help for many males with impotence, we encourage the use of arginine. Arginine can be obtained from Jo Mar Laboratories 800-538-4545 and from our Natural Health Team 800-416-2806.. |

As I've discussed elsewhere in this book, moderate supplementation makes sense. But I'm convinced that part of the reason the elderly participants responded so well to the multivitamin is that they weren't eating properly to begin with. They simply didn't have the appetite to consume enough food to get all the nutrients their bodies needed. As a result, their immune systems suffered.
Food Everywhere, But No Desire to Eat
So what causes appetite loss? Often it's a symptom of an underlying health problem or a side effect of a particular drug. |

LCP Fortification or supplementation for Infant Formulas
Manufacturers in the United States and Canada add linoleic acid to their infant formulas, but it doesn't benefit infants who do not have the capability to transform it into LCPs. Effects of low levels of LCPs are most pronounced in premature and low-birth-weight infants. Sheila Innis, from the Department of Pediatrics at the University of British Columbia, has found that bottle-fed infants consistently have low levels of AA and DHA in their blood serum and red blood cells, even those born full-term. |
Pfeiffer believed that AD/HD, called minimal brain dysfunction at the time, could be alleviated by correcting brain chemistry through diet and appropriate supplementation. Not many people were espousing such ideas.
What most impressed me about Dr. Pfeiffer's work was his introduction of the importance of mineral balance in the brain. What is so interesting about how vitamins and minerals act in the brain is the high degree of interaction between them. Perhaps this is what has boggled scientists for so long. |
You can see that the argument for supplementation with fatty acids, minerals, and vitamins is extremely compelling. In the early eighties, a Canadian team noted that the data accumulated proved diet alone could not provide enough nutrients to overcome fluctuation in brain biochemistry. They urged more study of the vitamins and minerals involved in the synthesis of the five neurotransmitters serotonin, the catecholamines, acetylcholine, histamine, and glycine. |
My suggestions for dietary supplementation in later chapters are based on clinical experience and the scientific data that are available. But we all must keep in mind that more research in this vein would be extremely helpful to those struggling with AD/HD and that we should do what we can to get it implemented and funded.

Subsequently, the researchers began magnesium supplementation with seventy-five of the magnesium-deficient AD/HD children with coexisting conditions. In addition, all of the children were receiving antipsychotic or other nonstimulant therapy for AD/HD. Fifty of the children received six milligrams of magnesium per pound (6 mg/lb) of body weight for six months, and the remaining twenty-five served as controls. The supplemented children showed a magnesium increase in body tissues and a decrease in hyperactivity. The control children remained the same. |

Therefore, in the conditions listed below which benefit from vitamin C supplementation, it is assumed that the diet contains insufficient C.
People who eat a meat-centered diet of overly processed foods may well benefit from a gram (1,000 mg.) or so of ascorbic acid daily. Individuals with serious illnesses, especially with excess and heat signs (such as those observed in high blood pressure/heart disease victims) seem to benefit from very large amounts of C, sometimes more than ten grams, but these levels need to be monitored and adjusted regularly. |

Dietary supplementation With Vitamins, Minerals and Nutrients
One of the most critical things that an individual can do to improve his or her health is to ensure that you are obtaining a needed amount of vitamins, minerals, and nutrients on a daily basis. You can't get these from the normal food you eat, so you must get them from somewhere else. When we do not obtain these substances we are more vulnerable to narrowing of arteries (arteriosclerosis), diabetes, cancer, cataracts, and other serious health problems. |
Magnesium supplementation may be of greater importance than calcium.
Magnesium is involved with regulation of acid base balance, helps promote absorption of minerals including calcium, phosphorus, sodium, and potassium. Magnesium helps utilization of B complex vitamins, Vitamin C, and Vitamin E. It aids in bone growth and is necessary for proper function of muscles.
Many foods contain magnesium, which is found primarily in green vegetables but is also present in wheat germ, soybeans, milk, whole grains, seafood, figs, corn, apples and oil rich seeds and nuts. |
Estrogen supplementation Without the Addition of Natural Progesterone.
This is a frequent occurrence. Many physicians prescribe estrogen with no progesterone or synthetic progesterone, which causes problems. Synthetic estrogen inhibits the blood concentration of natural progesterone and thus increases the female dominance with a corresponding worsening of the patients' symptoms.
Inadequate Production of Progesterone.
The non-pregnant female produces progesterone from the corpus luteum of the ovary. |
Crucial Lactoferrin supplementation To The Body
Dr. Rothschild discovered that the SBO's also produced lactoferrin in humans as a byproduct of their metabolism. Lactoferrin is a vital element to humans as it retrieves iron from our ingested food and then delivers the iron to sites where the body needs iron.
Frequently, lactoferrin levels in the body are not high and those persons may have trouble assimilating iron. Iron deficiency anemia is usually caused by internal bleeding from the gastrointestinal tract, but can follow chronic bleeding from any site. |

J Dietary supplementation during radiation therapy requires careful consideration. Since radiation therapy depletes the body's stores of beta-carotene and vitamins C and E, it would seem natural to take supplements during radiation treatment. However, there is some evidence that the greater the body's stores of these free-radical scavenging vitamins (and of the mineral selenium) during treatment, the larger the tumor will be after treatment. |

If negative and inferior foods are removed from the diet according to the first two priorities above, then steps 3 and 4 (supplementing and reducing) tend to occur as a consequence, and there is far less need for supplementation with vitamins, minerals, enzymes, and isolated nutrients.
Even though it is clear that supplements have merit, it is questionable if they are ever truly necessary when diet is optimal. Supplements are used both for prevention and for overcoming imbalances and disease. |

There are definite risks with supplementation."
Why are food sources of beta-carotene so much better than supplements? Scientists still aren't sure, but they suspect that it may be because beta-carotene has at least 500 siblings, collectively known as carotenoids. It's possible, they say, that it's not just the beta-carotene that's causing the benefits but the combination of beta-carotene plus its less-recognized kin.
Lycopene, a carotenoid found in tomatoes, for instance, may be considerably more potent than beta-carotene in the battle against cancer. |

Plant-based diets as well as antioxidant and botanical supplementation are becoming more accepted in mainstream medicine, not necessarily as magic bullets, but as a part of a multidimensional program that augments or "complements" conventional surgery, radiation, and chemotherapy.
Indeed, using diet as cancer therapy is attracting some prestigious mainstream attention. Pioneering Dr. Ernst
Wynder, president of the American Health Foundation in New York, has launched two major "nutritional intervention" cancer studies. |

Any sharp reduction in long-term supplementation can have bad results. When the body has become accustomed to large amounts of certain nutrients, a slow withdrawal over several weeks is best; it allows the organs of digestion to shift from isolated nutrients to absorbing and metabolizing the nutrients from foods. The fact that mega-dosing with nutrients can have at least some positive short-term benefits is not a sufficient recommendation for its use. |
