Today in the United States, human growth hormone supplementation is approved for use in adults by the Food and Drug Administration. But is supplementation the only way to correct this problem?
Anyone who adopts a low-carbohydrate nutritional program for any appreciable length of time will notice many changes in her body that can be attributed partially to increases in growth hormone. Over time, fat is reduced and muscle begins to increase, even in the absence of exercise. With exercise, the increase in muscle is very rapid. Fingernails grow faster and hair growth responds as well. |

Nutrient Deficiency
As detailed in Chapter 7, people with diabetes have an increased need for many nutrients. A deficiency of any one of several nutrients has been shown to contribute to several chronic complications of diabetes. In general, it is very safe to say that the risk of long-term complications of diabetes is inversely proportional to micronutrient status. In other words, the risk of diabetic complications increases in proportion to the degree of nutrient deficiency. For example, the lower the levels of magnesium, the greater the severity of diabetic retinopathy. |

The evidence has become almost impossible to ignore, as a growing body of research substantiates the value of supplementation. Various studies have suggested that supplements of one kind or another can prevent heart attacks, boost immunity, enhance mental function, alleviate depression, and slow the progression of Alzheimer's disease and osteoarthritis. And that's just the beginning.
As scientists learn more about the health benefits of supplementation, public interest has blossomed, too. An estimated 150 million Americans take supplements, with sales topping $4 billion a year. |

Sulfur is also a main component of connective tissue, so supplementation is beneficial with all connective tissue diseases (for example, arthritis). Even simply taking powdered sulfur has been shown to increase the formation of useful sulfur compounds. You can take a gelatin capsule filled with sulfur once a day or mix a pinch of it into each meal. The main sulfur amino acids are taurine, L-cysteine, and L-methionine; the main sulfur foods are egg and onion. |

• Eating plenty of garlic lowers fibrinogen.
• Olive oil lowers fibrinogen.
• Vitamin E lowers fibrinogen.
Keep Your Homocysteine Low
In the past few years, it has been very well scientifically documented that high levels of homocysteine, a byproduct of metabolism of the amino acid methionine, is an important risk factor in heart disease and strokes associated with narrowed blood vessels. In fact, high homocysteine levels turn out to be a much more accurate marker of heart disease risk than cholesterol or blood pressure. |
A small but pioneering study done some
10 years ago showed that supplementation with folic acid significantly decreased precancerous lung cells in smokers.
Folic acid is a B vitamin found in fresh, leafy, dark green vegetables such as spinach and kale, turnips, endive, asparagus, wheat bran, yeasts, and liver. It plays an important role in the synthesis of RNA and DNA, and thus in the process of cell division and growth. Chromosomes are more likely to have breaks if the cell is deficient in folic acid, creating the cell changes associated with cancers. |
Since stomach acid production declines as we age, HC1 supplementation can be a good anti-aging strategy.
Natural heartburn therapies include degly-cyrrhizinated licorice extract, or DGL. Try one or two 380-mg tablets chewed and swallowed on an empty stomach, three to four times a day. A glass of room temperature water, raw cabbage or potato juice, or herbal teas such as fenugreek, slippery elm, comfrey, licorice, and meadowsweet (lukewarm, no lemon) can bring quick relief. Fresh papaya or banana can help as well. |
Some research has shown that in depressed people the balance of essential fatty acids is off. supplementation with high-quality fish oil, as well as eating plenty of fish, walnuts, pumpkin seeds, and dark leafy greens (all sources of omega-3s), can help return the body to balance and give some relief. Harvard professor Andrew L. Stoll, M.D., has discovered that high-dose fish oil—in the neighborhood of 1.5 to 12 grams of EPA per day—has had powerful healing effects on study subjects who suffer from bipolar disorder, depression, and postpartum depression. |

In another study, Benton suggested that children consuming a poor diet were most apt to benefit from supplementation. Since such a large proportion of the population of children does consume a poor diet, it would be prudent for almost all children to take these moderately dosed supplements of vitamins and minerals.
A clinical study by M. Colgan and L. Colgan provides additional evidence of the importance of diet and supplements. |
I have found the KP test very useful in identifying children who need supplementation with these nutrients.
Measuring KP in Urine (2.4 Dimethyl-3-Ethyl Pyrrole)
Urine is collected in a container containing 1 tablet of vitamin C, 500 mg. This preserves the KP.
A 2 ml urine sample is placed in a glass stoppered centrifuge tube and extracted with 4 mg of chloroform by shaking either by hand or on a Vortex shaker for about 2 minutes. |

The Narional Institutes of Health recommends an intake of 1,200 to 1,500 mg of elemental calcium (page 483) daily during normal pregnancy (page 363).57 In women at risk of preeclampsia, most trials showing reduced incidence have used 2,000 mg of supplemental calcium per day.58 Nonetheless, many doctors continue to suggest amounts no higher than 1,500 mg per day.
Women with preeclampsia have been shown to have elevated blood levels of homocysteine (page 234).59, 60, 61' 62 Research indicates elevated homocysteine occurs prior to the onset of preeclampsia. |
In 1999, a double-blind study using 1.5 grams of arginine for three months in a group of women with interstitial cystitis, reported considerable improvement compared with the effect of a placebo in a variety of indices. Perhaps due to the small size of the study, some of these changes did not quite reach statistical significance.10
Preliminary evidence suggests that arginine may help regulate cholesterol levels (page 223).11 Arginine also appears to act as a natural blood thinner by reducing platelet aggregation.12

These perceptual tests can be used to select that part of the population most apt to need supplementation. Since coming to this conclusion I use the same normal scores for all subjects irrespective of age. Normal scores are 30 or less. Schizo-phrenic scores are around 65. The higher the score the greater the probability that they have schizophrenia.
We found a linear relationship between HOD scores and performance in school. |

Additionally, gymnema significantly improved cholesterol, triglyceride, and free fatty acid levels that were elevated.49
Some authors are speaking of the "adaptogenic" nature of gymnema, since it increases the body's ability to adapt to the presence of sugar. The increase in longevity noted above was ascribed to "cardiotonic and adaptogenic characteristics produced by increasing resistance and immunity in diabetic animals." It would have to be a characteristic of a true adaptogen to "normalize" function, notjust prolong life. |

Women can experience benefit from DHEA supplementation with doses as low as 5 mg a day.
One of the reasons the medical establishment may be so cautious about DHEA is because in many of the studies, the doses given were quite high. The likelihood of negative side effects is much greater with higher dosing.
You should avoid DHEA altogether if you have or have had a hormone-sensitive cancer such as breast, ovarian, testicular, or prostate cancer. DHEA is a precursor to estrogen and testosterone, meaning that the body can manufacture those hormones from DHEA. |

Use of large amounts of vitamin E in the prevention of retrolental fibroplasia requires the supervision of a pediatrician.
Vitamin E has also been found to prevent retinopathy in people with a rare genetic disease known as abetalipoproteinemia.9 People with this disorder lack a protein that transports fat-soluble nutrients, and can therefore develop deficiencies of vitamin E and other nutrients. |

For some women, supplementation with very small amounts of natural hormones may also help to maintain normal sexual functioning without incurring significant risk.
For example, Mary, a seventy-three-year-old widow, came for a consultation because she had begun a new relationship six months ago. The man she was seeing was her age and quite interested in having an active sex life. It had been a number of years since Mary had been sexually active; she had passed through menopause over twenty years ago. |

Among the cases they described are children who had severe learning disorders and who became well with supplementation. Barnes's findings, corroborated by S.E. Langer and J.F. Scheer in The Riddle of Illness, have not been taken seriously by the medical profession but are used by many alternate practitioners. I have found it very valuable. I have seen many patients who tested normal on all blood tests for thyroid, who had low body temperatures and who became better with thyroid. |

Minerals
Since zinc plays such a pivotal role in the mechanism of appetite, zinc supplementation is a significant part of the treatment of eating disorders. Liquid zinc is the recommended form. Supplements in the form of powders, tablets, or capsules first have to be broken down by stomach acids, and since many eating disorder patients are unable to properly digest nutrients, these are not as effective as the liquid form of the mineral.
The importance of liquid zinc is hard to overstate. |
Clinical studies have indicated that the level of DHEA in a 60-year-old is only 10 percent of the amount in the average 20-year-old. DHEA supplementation during the later years can hinder the onset of an assortment of serious disorders, including heart disease, cancer, arthritis, and asthma. It can also aid our mental capabilities and alleviate stress. DHEA can be obtained in 5-to 25-mg form.

In one study, researchers selected people with a history of colorectal polyps (precancerous growths) to find out how they responded to supplementation with fish oil. The study showed that doses of as little as 2.5 grams of fish oil a day could prevent the abnormal cell proliferation that is associated with the risk of polyps and with colon cancer risk.
Another study focused on the omega-3's found in fish oil. Specifically, researchers investigated the effect of omega-3's on breast cancer. |
