However, during weight loss we also release more toxins and need to protect ourselves from nutrient depletion through extra supplementation, including taking additional antioxidants to balance these toxins. Exercise will also promote the loss of excess pounds and help further detoxification. |

The fact that this product of the seas naturally contains the minerals necessary to aid its utilization by the body makes it a valuable choice for calcium supplementation.
It is also interesting to note that coral calcium can be used in reconstructive surgery where bone grafts are required. It appears that this form of calcium binds to the existing bone extremely well and grows into the existing bone to form a strong matrix with minimal rejection. Just another example of the potential of the seas to provide products that are highly compatible with the human body. |
The parathyroid gland controls the blood levels of calcium, regulating the amount being removed from our bones to maintain blood levels in conjunction with dietary supplementation. This control is vital to prevent premature osteoporosis, elevated blood levels, and kidney damage. Up to the age of about 30 the rate of formation of new bone matches the resorption (loss) of old bone so that the system is nicely in balance. After this age, the rate of loss tends to exceed the rate of formation, creating a porosity in our bones with consequential structural weakening. |

Few of us need supplementation, as Western diets usually have sufficient iodine content.
Hormone use
Women taking hormones, either in the form of a birth control pill or as menopausal hormone therapy, may have alterations in thyroid function that may require a change in treatment. See www. ultraprevention.com to learn more about getting a blood test.
Environmental toxins
Avoid chemicals and mercury—small amounts of these potent hormone disruptors can significantly affect the thyroid and other endocrine organs (sex organs and adrenal glands). |

In the absence of adequate sunlight, supplementation with vitamin D is essential.
The Sea in the Prevention of Osteoporosis
Supplementary calcium is available from a variety of sources such as proprietary formulations based on calcium carbonate, dairy products, and powdered oyster shell.
Dried and powdered oyster shell has been used for many years as a supplementary source of calcium and has the advantage over many other supplementary sources of a limited content of other minerals due to its origin in mineral-rich seawater. |

Misleading studies looking at supplementation with single nutrients have erroneously created a myth that taking vitamins is bad for you, or that you can meet all of your nutritional needs through food alone.
Not long ago a highly publicized study supporting (b) appeared in the media—but it did not actually show any clogging of arteries. It talked about a potential, but unproved, thickening of the artery walls in older male smokers. This study was misinterpreted and overpublicized by the media before it could be peer-reviewed or published in any medical journal.
And (c) is also wrong. |

While all inflammatory conditions may benefit from DHEA supplementation, of particular interest is the crippling infirmity rheumatoid arthritis. New research indicates that female patients—women most often fall victim to the disease—demonstrate low DHEA serum levels and that DHEA's replacement may be an important aspect of treatment and prevention.
Researchers also report that declining levels of DHEA are responsible for neurological impairments, and may contribute to memory loss and to brain changes that lead to Alzheimer's disease, as well as depression, anxiety, and loss of libido. |
So suppression of pro-inflammatory cytokines through supplementation is also necessary.
Homocysteine. Physicians rarely check for elevated blood levels of homocysteine, but this could be a fatal mistake, as studies correlate raised homocysteine levels with increased risk of heart attack or stroke.
Homocysteine forms from the amino acid methionine found in red meat and chicken. Sometimes this substance is elevated due to inadequate levels of folic acid and vitamins B6 and B12. The problem may also be the result of a genetic defect. |
I find it unfortunate that even when studies show the importance of vitamin supplementation, there is no call to implement its use. Researchers never conclude that they must take action, but only that they need to conduct further studies. In doing so, they keep the grant money that pays their salaries flowing. It seems they care very little for the health of the people afflicted with the conditions they study. I can only assume they believe the job of implementing their results belongs to an appropriate government body. |
We'll be looking at beneficial changes you can make in your diet, your supplementation, and your environment, as well as in the areas of exercise and attitude. But this doesn't mean you must change everything right away. That would be overwhelming. Changes can be gradual but steady. After a while, you will begin to see life in a whole new way, and you will be able to make the changes you need to live longer, more healthfully, and more happily as well.

This one-size-fits-all program of supplementation is based on the work I did in the health support groups and represents one of the pillars of my Wellness Model. Note: Although the following guidelines are appropriate for most Power Agers, you should work with your doctor to make sure that the supplements listed below are right for you. This is particularly important if you are taking any medications. Moreover, you should not be taking all these supplements at once. |

Research has conclusively shown that fish-oil supplementation can reduce the inflammation of arthritis.31 An effective amount is the equivalent of 1,000 mg of EPA and DHA a day, which means two or three capsules. Cod liver oil, the richest source of omega-3 fats, has also been shown to reduce the pain and inflammation of arthritis.
A recent study giving osteoarthritis patients scheduled for knee replacement surgery cod liver oil is a case in point. |
I would suggest that if a person has had a heart attack, much better results could be achieved by making dietary changes, plus taking more substantial supplementation, including omega-3 fats.
THE BENEFITS OF FISH OILS
The omega-3 fish oils, which contain EPA and DHA, have also been shown to reduce risk of heart disease. So too has eating fish. If you've had a heart attack and start eating omega-3-rich fish three times a week, you could halve your risk of a further heart attack. Other trials giving people omega-3 fish oils have found that they do indeed confer protection from heart disease. |

Fiber supplementation may also be necessary.
Nutritional substances in this category aid in food breakdown and in its subsequent absorption into the bloodstream for travel to the metabolic factory of the liver. Proper digestion reduces the allergenic and inflammatory effects that occur from larger, more complex molecules.
The CDS A (Comprehensive Digestive Stool Analysis, see page 18) helps identify digestion weaknesses and guides the practitioner and patient toward the proper replacement support. |

However, a balanced level of each is essential for healthy brain and antidepressant function and, if the body cannot produce these itself due to the lack of the necessary enzymes, then appropriate dietary supplementation can provide the solution in many cases.
While tryptophan is not readily available from regularly consumed marine sources (dairy products will be the most natural source for this compound), tyrosine and its precursor phenylalanine are readily available, in particular in shellfish. |

Magnesium and calcium supplementation should be avoided by people with severe kidney problems (severe renal insufficiency); extra magnesium may be weakening to those with myasthenia gravis. Too much magnesium can cause muscle weakness or cramps; if this happens stop using magnesium and use more calcium. regarded as the "beauty mineral." Cell walls remain permeable so that nutrients can freely flow into the cells and wastes and toxins can easily be removed.

In thin postmenopausal women whose fat cells and adrenal glands aren't producing much, if any, estrogen, supplementation with a natural estrogen cream in small doses might be justified. Women who are having menopausal symptoms such as night sweats, hot flashes, and vaginal dryness may also benefit from some estrogen, but again it's only needed in small amounts. Taking small amounts of estrogen right around the time of menopause can also help prevent the large drop in bone density seen around that time, so if you are at risk for osteoporosis it might be worth supplementing it for a few years. |

Reinoculation includes supplementation of symbiotic bacteria normally present in the healthy GI tract. These bacteria, called "probiotics," include Lactobacillus acidophilus (also bulgaricus and thermophilus) and Bifidobacteria bifidus (also longum, infantis, and breve). They are predominant in the gut of young, healthy people but often decrease with age, especially with the use of antibiotics, exposure to toxic chemicals and metals, and substance abuse (particularly alcohol and caffeine). |

Among the most popular alternative therapies used in the management of diabetes have been acupuncture, biofeedback, guided imagery, vitamin and mineral supplementation, and the use of herbal and botanical preparations. While many of these therapies have shown promise, most are either untested or unproven based on current scientific standards. They do, however, have a long cultural tradition in societies around the world, and when one looks at their benefits, at least in terms of individuals or pilot studies, they show promise. |

This supposed diagnostic system does not tell us anything about the diet these children should follow, nothing about supplementation with nutrients, nothing about the best kind of social situation or learning situation they should be in. If the entire diagnostic scheme were scrapped today, it would make almost no difference to the way these children are treated or to the outcome of treatment. Nor would their parents feel any better or worse. |

However, researchers who have studied chromium in the human diet feel most people are deficient in this mineral and would likely benefit from some supplementation in modest amounts. Chromium is present in nuts, seeds, and whole grains. The addition of a modest amount of chromium in a supplement would likely be beneficial in helping to control blood sugar.
Magnesium deficiency has been linked by several studies to an increased risk of type 2 diabetes. |

Instead, a combination of supplementation, fortification, and dietary approaches is likely to be needed—approaches such as promoting the production and consumption of fruits and vegetables rich in beta-carotene, educating people about how to use such foods, and improving the quantity and variety of foods in the diet (so beta-carotene can be better absorbed). Perhaps most helpful would be basic public health measures such as providing adequate supplies of clean water (to prevent transmission of diarrheal and parasitic diseases). |

Many of the symptoms of Parkinson's disease can be overcome with high magnesium supplementation; shaking, for example, can be prevented, and rigidity can be eased. With preeclampsia, pregnant women can develop convulsions, nausea, dizziness, and headaches; in hospitals, this is treated with magnesium infusions.
Magnesium for the Heart: Adequate levels of magnesium are essential for the heart muscle. Those who die from heart attacks usually have very low magnesium but high calcium levels in their heart muscles. |

A recent study found that vanadium supplementation produced modest increases in insulin sensitivity and a slight reduction in insulin requirements. However, the evidence is slight, and the best that can be said is that we could all benefit by eating a variety of whole foods on a regular basis. These foods would provide not just vanadium, but many other important trace elements, such as boron, manganese, and zinc, that are required for numerous enzyme systems throughout the body. Rich sources of vanadium include dill, radishes, eggs, vegetable oils, buckwheat, oats, and peppers. |

The average middle-aged person, by careful selection and preparation of food, can get adequate amounts of the right nutrients, including those featured in the table. supplementation usually isn't necessary; it should be a last resort. For some people over 70 years old, supplementation may make sense. When supplements are used, the nutrients in the table should be present in any multivitamin or multimineral preparation you choose. For individual recommendations tailored to unique needs, the advice and counsel of a physician or trained, registered dietitian is helpful. |
