Seven Prescriptions—Hemorrhoids Aesculus Hippocastanum is for a pain that feels as if the rectum is being poked with sticks. The pain extends to the back. Aloe Vera is for large, painful hemorrhoids. Your doctor states that the hemorrhoids look like a "bunch of grapes." They feel better with cold compresses. You may be prone to diarrhea. Calcarea Fluorica is helpful when bleeding and itching occur with the hemorrhoids. Often, lower back pain is present. You may have problems with flatulence and constipation.
L-carnitine delays the progression of Alzheimer's disease, improves memory, and improves overall performance in some people with Alzheimer's disease. ne placebo-controlled trial found that 58 percent of people with Alzheimer's disease had significant improvement in memory, as well as in mental and behavioral function, from taking 200 meg of huperzine A twice a day for eight weeks. This was considered a statistically significant improvement, compared to the 36 percent who responded to placebo. Super Prescription #5 Phosphatidylserine Take 300 mg daily.

This is because taking high doses of cesium causes the body to leach out potassium and a severe potassium deficiency will result if high doses of potassium supplementation are not also taken. The danger of potassium deficiency cannot be overstated, since severe potassium deficiency can easily result in death. The prime cause of death from this sort of deficiency is heart attack.

Evidence from in vivo trials also suggests that evening primrose oil supplementation may prove beneficial in the treatment of urolithiasis.107109 Cancer In vitro studies have shown that gamma-linolenic acid has anti-neoplastic properties.74 The clinical relevance of this has yet to be determined. An open-label trial with historical matched controls was conducted to assess the effects of adding 2.8g GLA daily to tamoxifen therapy (20 mg daily) for 6 weeks in 30 patients with endocrine-sensitive breast cancer (20 stage I-II, 14 locally advanced and 4 metastatic).
Psoriasis The supplementation of evening primrose oil and marine oil (i.e., omega 6 and omega 3) have proved unsuccessful in the management of psoriasis.40 ASTHMA Oral administration of evening primrose oil appears not to be effective in the management of various forms of asthma.19-32'41'42 DIABETIC NEUROPATHY As has already been noted, the ratio of linoleic acid and linolenic acid to their respective metabolites has been found to be elevated in diabetes.8 43 44 In diabetic patients, both delta-6 and delta-5 desaturase enzymes may be impaired.
In addition, relief was noted in a double-blind, placebo controlled crossover trial in women suffering from irritable bowel syndrome exacerbated premenstrually with supplementation of evening primrose oil.8 Post-Viral Fatigue Syndrome Supplements containing evening primrose have been demonstrated to be effective in the management of 'post-viral syndrome' (a.k.a. chronic fatigue syndrome, myalgic encephalomyelitis) in both placebo controlled trials and in clinical practice.
Sjogren's Syndrome Abnormalities in fatty acid metabolism have been noted in Sjogren's syndrome.8 supplementation with evening primrose oil has been shown to stimulate lachrymation and ease the lethargy often present with this condition.8'85 86 However, a more recent randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial (n=90) reported that daily ingestion of 800 mg or 1600 mg GLA (extracted from evening primrose oil) for 6 months by patients with primary Sjogren's syndrome had no effect on fatigue compared to placebo.
In a recent animal study, evening primrose oil supplementation was shown to out-perform a number of other products rich in GLA (borage oil, blackcurrant oil and 'fungal' oil).56 WOMEN'S HEALTH CARE Premenstrual Syndrome A number of studies have indicated that evening primrose oil may be of use in the management of premenstrual syndrome.8-5761 The benefits are seen only following prolonged administration of 4 to 6 months.8-20 A proposed mechanism of action is that the PGE1 generated could influence the actions of prolactin which is thought to play a role in the presentation of this syndrome.
Glycosylated hemoglobin levels were not influenced by evening primrose oil supplementation.54 These positive findings were confirmed in a later double-blinded multicenter trial with patients (n=lll) suffering from 'mild diabetic neuropathy'. The dose of evening primrose oil was higher than in the previous study (6 grams daily equivalent to 480 mg of gamma-linolenic acid) and the trial was carried out over a year. The response to evening primrose oil appeared more pronounced in those with lower starting glycosylated hemoglobin levels, suggesting satisfactory blood sugar control.

The synergy factor The effects of enhancing mental performance through supplementation of "smart nutrients" such as omega-3 fats, phosphatidyl choline, PS, pantothenic acid, DMAE, and pyroglutamate are likely to be far greater when these substances are taken in combination than when they are taken individually. In one study in 1981, a team of researchers led by Raymond Barrus gave choline and piracetam to elderly laboratory rats, which are noted for age-related memory decline.

Other factors that may contribute to such depression include: • Emotional letdown following the excitement and fear experienced during pregnancy, labor, and delivery • Discomforts of the puerperium • Fatigue due to loss of sleep • Anxiety over the ability to care for a dependent newborn • Isolation Postpartum depression can be treated with an approach similar to that taken for PMS in terms of herbs, diet, supplementation, and exercise. Greater emphasis can be placed on Artemisia vulgaris and Hypericum perforatum.

However, general supplementation may be less important in this detox program than with the specific detox plans for alcohol, caffeine, and nicotine, when more nutrients can ease withdrawal symptoms. (These specific substance detoxification programs are discussed in later chapters.) For straight juice cleansing or water fasts, we usually do not recommend very many supplements; however, some nutrients or herbs to stimulate the detoxification process may be helpful.

If there is loss of blood via the gut, zinc, magnesium, and iron supplementation is particularly important. If diarrhea is severe, electrolytes must be replaced. In initial stages of treatment, avoid adding fiber to the diet, in order to minimize irritation of the inflamed mucosa. However, as symptoms are brought under control, a gradual buildup to a high-fiber diet is beneficial. Lactobacillus-rich yogurt can also be very helpful. In addition, some people respond well to diets that limit the intake of salicylate-containing foods.
When one eats a consistently well-balanced diet of fresh fruits, vegetables, grains, and some animal protein, nutritional supplementation is unnecessary.

Maintain vitamin levels through supplementation (see previous page). If cravings are strong, take 1 gram of vitamin C every 1 to 2 hours. 5. Also, take sodium or potassium bicarbonate tablets to alkalinize your body—1 for each occasion of craving, but not more than 6 daily. 6. Use herbal supplements, including herbal stop-smoking brews. 7. Exercise, especially in the fresh air, to oxygenate your body. 8. If you are having real difficulty stopping, consider the use of nicotine patches or gum to help your transition. 9.

But if we can identify problems with cellular function early enough, then the treatment is not surgery, chemotherapy, radiation, or organ transplantation, but rather changes in nutrition, targeted therapeutic supplementation, or changes in lifestyle and/or habits—treatments that promote the natural healing processes of the body. The current problem is that traditional testing checks only for organ damage, and not for cellular and biochemical function. If you ask your doctor to check your liver function, the blood tests usually consist of measuring the level of enzymes produced by the liver.

A certain kind of dermatitis, called acrodermatitis, responds exceptionally well to zinc supplementation and is primarily caused by zinc deficiency. Diet advice Generally a vegan-type diet, low in saturated fat but with enough essential fats from seeds, is best. If you suspect an allergy to dairy products or wheat, test for this by avoiding these foods. Supplements • 2 x multivitamin and multimineral (with magnesium 300 mg and zinc 15 mg) • 2 x vitamin C 1,000 mg • 2 x antioxidant complex • 2 x essential omega-3 and omega-6 oil capsules • Vitamin E 600 IU Also read chapter 27.

Excessive zinc supplementation will deplete copper levels, so these minerals should be taken together, usually in a ratio of about 10 to 15 parts zinc to 1 part copper. • The best forms include zinc sulfate hepahydrate, zinc mono-methionine, and zinc picolinate; zinc aspartate, orotate, and citrate are also effective. • Take zinc at least two hours before or after eating a lot of fiber; fiber interferes with zinc's absorption. • Toxic effects from long-term high doses of zinc may include copper deficiency, anemia, low HDL level, and paradoxically low immune function.

Double-blind studies in women with osteoporosis have also shown positive effects. The most significant studies were performed in elderly women with a history of vertebtal fractures due to osteoporosis.8' 9' 10 Ipriflavone therapy not only stopped bone loss, it actually increased bone density and significantly eliminated or improved vertebral fractures and bone pain (page 338). One double-blind study has failed to confirm the beneficial effect of ipriflavone. In that study, ipriflavone was no more effective than a placebo for preventing bone loss in postmenopausal women with osteoporosis.

Calcium and magnesium. supplementation with these minerals can have a marked hypotensive effect. Sugar. In some individuals, heavy sugar intake may raise blood pressure, possibly by causing sodium retention or by a direct effect on the hormonal stress response mediated by the adrenal cortex. Alcohol. There appears to be a link between alcohol and hypertension, but not a simple one. Statistics show that people who drink a little tend to have lower blood pressure than teetotalers or those who drink a lot. Alcohol withdrawal causes a temporary increase in blood pressure, followed by a decrease.
It appears that supplementation with glucosamine sulfate might stimulate the synthesis of the missing glycoproteins. A number of studies have compared glucosamine sulfate with ibuprofen for the treatment of osteoarthritis.1 A recent randomized, double-blind, controlled clinical trial compared the use of glucosamine sulfate and ibuprofen in patients diagnosed with temporomandibular joint (TMJ) osteoarthritis. The researchers concluded that both glucosamine sulfate and ibuprofen reduced pain levels in these patients.

High protein diets, vitamin supplementation, counting calories, or skipping meals will not correct an underlying hormonal imbalance. Determining whether you are out of balance is done by careful examination and testing of your hormone system. If you do in fact have a hormone-related problem, then by going through a comprehensive detoxification program and then a hormonal rebalancing, you may be able to lose weight without dieting, and regain energy. Not everyone suffers from a hormone imbalance, but it is a good idea to rule out such a condition before embarking on any rejuvenation program.

Chandra from the Memorial University of Newfoundland in Canada decided to test whether supplementation with vitamins and trace elements in modest amounts could improve memory and mental performance in healthy, elderly subjects. He gave ninety-six such men and women, all over the age of sixty-five, either a daily supplement of trace elements and vitamins or a placebo for twelve months. The participants' blood nutrient levels were measured at the beginning and at the end of the study, as was their immediate and long-term memory, abstract thinking, problem-solving ability, and attention.
One kind of dermatitis, called acrodermatitis, is primarily caused by zinc deficiency and responds exceptionally well to zinc supplementation. Diet: Keep it low in saturated fat, eat sufficient essential fats and very little meat or dairy products—stay mainly vegan, although fish is all right. Test for dairy or wheat allergy, if suspected, by avoiding these foods for a couple of weeks and seeing if there is any improvement. Consider a cleansing diet.

Its use in calcium supplementation for the inhibition of bone-density loss and osteoporosis is, nevertheless, valid. Corals are animals that mainly inhabit reefs, sometimes actually forming the reefs. They surround themselves with a strong-walled structure based on calcium salts. Their normal food is plankton, which they entrap with tentacles or sticky substances, depending on the species. It is the rigid wall structure of the corals that provides coral calcium.
However, it need not present a problem if daily supplementation with fat-soluble vitamins, at least two hours prior to consuming chitosan, is undertaken. • To minimize the potential for constipation, it is necessary to drink at least 250 ml of water (a full glass is plenty) with every 1000 mg of product consumed. The amount of chitosan recommended to take per meal is usually 1000 mg. This should be taken with the meal, or meals, involving the most fat.

In addition, vitamin C supplementation helps during withdrawal by supporting the adrenal glands. As a stress-reducer, several grams or more of vitamin C can be taken over the course of the day, preferably in a buffered form, especially with the main alkaline minerals—potassium, calcium, and magnesium—as well as zinc. I also suggest B complex vitamins with extra pantothenic acid (250 mg four times daily), along with 500 mg of vitamin C every two or three hours.
