To ensure rapid growth, cattle get extra protein from supplemental feed, sometimes derived from other animals, even though bovines are vegetarians by nature. Such supplementation triggered England's BSE epidemic, so the solution in the U.S. has been to ban the use of protein derived from ruminants. (There are, however, exceptions—namely, beef tallow and certain blood components not found to have infectivity)
But this is a solution to a problem that doesn't have to exist, if we raised cows on green pastures and not on fecal-dusted feedlots. |

This meaningful individual information, combined with the ease of dietary improvements and supplementation, empowers patients with knowledge and motivates them toward self-healing. Patients develop the attitude, "I want my levels to be optimal," and then they work toward achieving them. Furthermore, from our medical perspective, laboratory testing enables us to later recheck nutrient values to confirm proper absorption and utilization.
Through testing, we have realized that no one can ever assume that a person's diet is adequate. |

The cause of psoriatic arthritis is unknown. In conventional medicine there is usually little thought given to an infectious etiology. Without knowing (or even searching for) a cause, how can an effective treatment be prescribed? The conventional treatment of psoriatic arthritis often includes the use of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (i.e., NSAID's). |

If you are unsure of getting enough calcium from food, supplementation is recommended. Different supplement products contain different forms of calcium, some of which are better than others. Calcium carbonate contains 40 percent elemental calcium, and is a form of calcium that needs to be acted on by stomach acid to be absorbed. If you take a supplement containing calcium carbonate, take it with food, preferably toward the end of a meal. Calcium citrate doesn't require stomach acid for absorption so it can can be taken any time. |

Although speculative, the inflammatory theory of depression may unify a host of observations that were previously unexplained. It is also consistent with the theory that the soaring rates of major depression in this century are mediated by the rising ratios in our diets of omega-6 fatty acids relative to omega-3s. |

This relatively short period of vitamin E supplementation delayed the onset of end-stage Alzheimer's disease by almost eight months.
At the time of this study, Sano considered only vitamin E's antioxidant effect against free radicals. However, research has shown that a variety of pro-inflammatory compounds congregate in the brain of patients with Alzheimer's disease. It is likely that vitamin E's antiinflammatory properties also help prevent and slow the disease's progression. |

For example, coconut oil was added to the formula of 46 very low-birthweight babies to see if supplementation was capable of enhancing their weight gain. The group with the coconut oil gained weight quicker. The weight gain was due to physical growth and not fat storage.6 The babies gained more weight and grew better with the coconut oil because their bodies were able to digest it easily. The vegetable oils, to a great extent, passed through their digestive tracts undigested and thus deprived them of nutrients they needed for proper development. |

Usually referred to as SAMe (pronounced "sammy"), this sulfur-containing nutrient donates "methyl groups" to more than forty major chemical reactions in the body. Methyl groups provide carbon and hydrogen and are necessary for creating new cells. SAMe has often been recommended for treating inflammation and arthritis: it donates sulfur molecules to glucosamine and chondroitin sulfate, enabling the body to build new collagen and cartilage. |
Many studies also have found that high-potency supplementation can extend the life expectancy of cancer patients, though these studies are often ignored by oncologists. In terms of prevention, vitamin E and selenium supplements are probably the best supplements for reducing the overall risk of cancer.
The B vitamins play crucial roles in the body's synthesis and repair of damaged DNA. Folic acid, vitamin B12, vitamin B3, and vitamin B, may be particularly important, especially in ensuring accurate gene transcription and repair. |
That said, a key objective of supplementation should be to lower glucose levels and improve insulin function, which should in turn reduce inflammation. The chief supplements for improving glucose tolerance and insulin function are alpha-lipoic acid, chromium picolinate, vitamin E, vitamin C, and silymarin (an antioxidant extract of the herb milk thistle). If you are taking any drug for controlling glucose, be aware that your medication requirements may decrease. |

When Dick tested her DHEA level, it was low. supplementation replenished her DHEA supply, which had a positive effect on her energy and mood— but not on her sexual responsiveness. Once she added 300 milligrams a day of Rhodiola rosea to her regimen, Marian happily recovered her sexual desire and her capacity for sexual pleasure.
The impact of hormones on female sexuality is not well understood. So far, the results of scientific studies have been inconsistent. |
This helps explain why attempts to treat burnout or chronic fatigue with Cortisol supplementation, in the form of hydrocortisone, have had mixed or weak results.3 In one recent study, which involved 100 patients with chronic fatigue syndrome, 50 received low-dose hydrocortisone, while the rest took a placebo. By the end of the study, which lasted 6 months, the research found no measurable difference in fatigue or well-being between the two groups. |
Publication in major medical journals also could increase media coverage of herbs like Rhodiola rosea and thus promote their inclusion in a rational regimen of dietary supplementation for millions of consumers who are looking for ways to increase energy, reduce stress, and optimize their well-being. |

We have demonstrated that vitamin-mineral supplementation raises low blood vitamin concentrations," Schoenthaler says, "corrects abnormal brain function owing to low blood vitamin status, and ultimately produces better behavior and less violence among juvenile delinquents." He goes on to say that supplementation may not even be necessary if juveniles are counseled to take responsibility for selecting a good diet, and that "the literature suggests that about a 45% reduction in violence is possible by diet change alone."33

In fact, I have written an entire book devoted to what I believe is the most important aspect of protecting your health—nutritional supplementation. What Your Doctor Doesn't Know About Nutritional Medicine May Be Killing You explains that most physicians are not aware of how oxidative stress can destroy our health and how nutritional supplements are our best defense against the damage it can cause. I based this book on scientific literature and present the medical evidence that demands a verdict. Should you be taking nutritional supplements? |

Women who use DHEA supplementation report higher energy levels, an improved state of well-being, and an increased ability to cope with stress. However, DHEA supplements should be taken with caution. Taking high doses can damage the liver and may suppress the body's natural ability to synthesize the hormone. If you choose to try DHEA replacement therapy, it is best to do so under the guidance of a knowledgeable health-care provider and to be sure to take supplements of the antioxidants vitamins C and E and selenium to prevent oxidative damage to the liver. |

Taking daily vitamins and mineral supplementation will add to the vitamins and minerals already found in a diet that is appropriate for a person with type 2 diabetes.
Why? A growing body of research shows that vitamin and mineral supplementation can improve the way your body responds to insulin. This research shows that vitamins with antioxidant properties lessen the impact of type 2 diabetes by "mopping up" free radical oxidants that occur as part of the disease process of diabetes and can damage nerves and blood vessels.

Also, yeast is a high-phosphotus food and as such needs to be balanced out by some soft of calcium supplementation; it is also high in purines, which produce uric acid, a prime factor in gout, a painful disease of the joints. To most people, it has a pleasant-tasting, cheesy flavor, and it can be used as a condiment on vegetables, baked potatoes, popcotn, and other foods. |
With spirulina supplementation, important parts of the immune system—the bone marrow stem cells, macrophages, T-cells, and natural killer cells—exhibit enhanced activity, and the spleen and thymus glands also show enhanced function. Scientists observe spirulina causing macrophages to increase in number, becoming "activated" and more effective at killing germs. EPO (ery-thropoetin) is produced by healthy kidneys and regulates bone marrow stem cell production of red blood cells. |

Although they don't believe in vitamin and mineral supplementation, they don't disbelieve in it, either. To their way of thinking, a little extra supplementation won't hurt.
Others, like myself, heartily endorse the use of vitamin and mineral supplements. We have seen the positive effects of these supplements on patients with diabetes and know that they have virtually no side effects.

The relationship between vitamin A deficiency and child mortality was noted as early as the 1930s, when supplementation with vitamin A was reported to significantly reduce mortality among measles patients. Research in 1990 again reported the effectiveness of vitamin A supplementation in reducing morbidity and mortality (JAMA, 17 February 1993, p. 898).
