Bi2 deficiency is particularly hazardous for newborn babies, especially babies of vegan live-food nursing mothers who are not using B 12 supplementation. Since 1980 there have been 130 reports of serious B12 deficiency in the infants of vegan mothers whose primary food was breast milk and the mother did not supplement her own or the baby's diet with B12. Lack of Bn in the mother's diet has been shown to cause a severe lack of myelin in nerve tissue. |

Currently, no formal recommendations for chromium supplementation exist for people with diabetes. However, researchers who have studied chromium in the human diet feel most people are deficient in this mineral and would likely benefit from some supplementation in modest amounts. Chromium is present in nuts, seeds, and whole grains. The addition of a modest amount of chromium in a supplement would likely be beneficial in helping to control blood sugar.
Magnesium deficiency has been linked by several studies to an increased risk of type 2 diabetes. |

Consequently, continuous supplementation with bile salts could lead to an excessive accumulation, resulting in diarrhea or green stools. Bile-salt supplements should therefore be used intermittently and only with professional supervision.
Allergic Malabsorption
We all know that certain foods do not "agree" with certain people. Preliminary evidence suggests that these food sensitivities or incompatibilities can result in disturbances of digestion or absorption.
Virtually any portion of the gastrointestinal tract can be a "target tissue" for allergic reactions. |

We believe that enzyme supplementation is vital for elderly persons.
The following are a few recommended enzyme complex products:
• AbsorbAid from Nature's Sources is made from plant enzymes and includes lipase, amylase, and protease from bromelain, as well as cellulase and lactase. It has been shown to significantly improve the absorption of nutrients, especially essential fatty acids and zinc.
• Acid-Ease from Prevail Corporation is a digestive aid from natural plant sources that includes amylase, lipase, and cellulase, as well as the soothing herbs marshmal-low root and slippery elm. |

PS can alleviate, ameliorate, and sometimes reverse age-related decline of memory, learning, concentration, word skills, and mood."
But there's a controversy.
Nearly all of the good studies on phosphatidylserine used PS from the brains of cows. For obvious reasons—like concerns with viruses like mad cow disease—no one is using or selling PS from bovine sources anymore. The PS now on the market as a supplement comes from soy, and there is a huge controversy over whether it's as effective. |

Unfortunately, one fairly recent study indicates that even calcium supplementation may not be protective against fluoride-induced calcium loss.133 If this is so, the only solution is to remove fluoride from drinking water and teeth-cleaning products.
Taken together, these studies indicate that certain groups of individuals are at significantly increased risk of fractures when consuming fluoridated drinking water and using fluoride-containing products. |
Because our food has become adulterated by processing methods and certain growing practices, supplementation is more important than ever. Stress has become an integral part of human existence, and stress rapidly depletes our nutrients, especially our antioxidants. In addition, numerous pesticides, herbicides, foreign organic chemicals, fluoride, mercury, aluminum, and other toxic substances, are assaulting our bodies. All of these compounds must be detoxified, putting a heavy demand on our detoxification systems—all of which are dependent on nutrition. |
For example, zinc supplementation has been shown to improve sperm counts and motility, which increases the likelihood of successful conception. L-carnitine is another supplement found to improve sperm function and survival.
We know that sperm, like all other cells, depend on the B vitamins for energy production and cell maintenance. These include thiamine, riboflavin, niacinamide, pyridoxine (B6), panthothenic acid (B5), folic acid, and methylcobalamin (vitamin B12). |
Antioxidants must be constantly replenished, and a good diet and careful supplementation accomplish this goal.
Phytochemicals: the Flavonoids
Plants contain thousands of antioxidants, mostly in the form of specialized complex chemicals called flavonoids, each of which is a unique molecule that plays a major role in nutrition. Plants also contain numerous vitamins and minerals that act as antioxidants: one group of vitamins is called the carotenoids, which includes about forty different varieties that humans consume. |

In a third case report, calcium supplementation corrected the hypocalcemia and associated anxiety in a patient with severe neuropsychiatric manifestations following ablation of a parathyroid adenoma.2 In other reports cited by M.R. Werbach, a high calcium diet significantly helped two patients with severe anxiety symptoms, but would probably not help patients with a confirmed deficiency of calcium (due to hypoparathyroidism) in their blood. 3
Magnesium
R. A. Buist has indicated that magnesium depletion is associated with an increased lactate-to-pyruvate ratio. |
Rudin had his patients take (2 to 6 tablespoons daily). supplementation with flaxseed oil can cause side effects in a very small percentage of individuals (about 3%), such as hypomania, mania, or other behavioral changes.10,14 Other common side effects from flaxseed oil include loose stools or diarrhea (personal observation).
Fish Oils
Despite the clinical utility of flaxseed oil, it is not biologically equivalent to other types of omega-3 fatty acids, such as those found in fish.1? |
Even though supplementation was discontinued after 4 weeks, the 9 patients who had a favorable response continued symptom-free during 3 months of follow-up. The authors of this study theorized that a marginal deficiency of pyridoxine had triggered the hyperventilation syndrome by causing serotonin depletion.
The second function involves pyridoxine's role as a coenzyme for glutamic acid decarboxylase. This coenzyme facilitates the conversion of glutamic acid to GABA (an inhibitory neurotransmitter). GABA plays a role in modulation of anxiety. |
These lesions have only been reported to occur from oral supplementation, but I have seen the same acneiform eruption occur (albeit, rarely) from hydroxocobalamin injections. The lesions consist of loosely disseminated small papules or papulopustules on the face, the upper parts of the back, and chest, and these can spread to the upper arm. They go away within a week once the injections have been discontinued.
Therapeutic Recommendation
Vitamin B-12 is an excellent anxiolytic agent. It is safe, inexpensive, and relatively pain-free when given by injection. |
Therefore, a greater amount of NAD obtained by means of niacinamide supplementation might help the tissues of the body, including the central nervous system, to oxidize lactate (obtained from the blood) to pyruvate readily, and, consequently, mitigate panic attacks, and hyperventilation (if present).
Figure 2: Niacinamide's Therapeutic Effect upon Blood Lactate Levels
Supplemental niacinamide increases the conversion of lactate to pyruvate, thus reducing blood lactate levels and reducing anxiety. |

There are two controversies surrounding side effects of the current pharmaceutical supplementation of L-dopa. Over the long term, supplemented L-dopa appears to lose its effectiveness. A second area of controversy questions whether L-dopa is toxic to dopamine neurons; there is little evidence, though, to support this statement.7
Velvet bean is now being considered as an alternative to the pharmaceutical medication levodopa. In one case study, it was given to a Parkinson's patient for twelve years instead of the pharmaceutical L-dopa medication. |

Research indicates that manganese supplementation may support health in diabetics, lower the frequency of seizures in people with epilepsy, help build strong bones, and also strengthen bones in patients with osteoporosis.30,31
Is It Safe?
Manganese has been found safe at recommended dosage levels.
The recommended dosage range for manganese is 250 meg to 5 mg daily.
_SILICA_
The mineral silica is found in all tissues, and thus takes part in a wide range of body functions. This mineral is especially vital for the health of bones and cartilage. |
Thus, supplementation of this mineral is important to keep the body strong and resistant to a variety of disorders, and to help maintain the slightly alkaline environment that fights inflammation.
The Science Behind It
Calcium has been studied for many years. The scientific research performed on this mineral includes the following:
Calcium is commonly known for its role in the development and long-term health of bones and teeth.20'21 Calcium has also received much attention for its role in supporting bone health in postmenopausal women. |

Branched-Chain Amino Acids
The branched-chain amino acids (BCAAs) are leucine, isoleucine, and valine. These essential amino acids are very important for the maintenance of muscle tissue and appear to preserve muscle stores of glycogen, a storage form of carbohydrate that can be converted into energy. |

In phase one, you avoid:
• hot spices (because of possible water retention)
• oils and fats (other than daily flaxseed oil and GLA supplementation)
• all grains
• all starchy vegetables (potatoes, corn, peas, carrots, beans, etc.)
• all dairy
• alcohol and coffee (you are allowed one cup of organic coffee in the morning)
Other than that, the diet is flexible. No counting carb grams, figuring out protein minimums, or counting calories. |

INTERSTITIAL CYSTITIS
Interstitial cystitis is characterized by symptoms typical of a urinary tract infection (pain or burning upon urination, sense of urgency, and increased urinary frequency), but without evidence of an infection. Compared to people without interstitial cystitis, nitric oxide manufacture is decreased in patients with chronic interstitial cystitis.
Nitric oxide plays a role in bladder function. |

Omega-3s are the first of the fatty acids to be depleted when you lose fat, so the need for supplementation increases even more when you're on a weight loss program.
There has been some controversy about how to supplement with omega-3s. There are basically three omega-3 fatty acids we are interested in: ALA (alpha linolenic acid)—which is found in flaxseeds—and EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) and DHA (docosahexaenoic acid), both of which are found in fish. EPA and DHA are the most important, and the body is supposed to make them from ALA. |
The only question is whether carnitine supplementation actually increases the amount of fat "burned."
It's beginning to look like it does. An extremely impressive study with normal subjects demonstrated that supplemental carnitine actually increased fat burning, even in subjects without carnitine deficiencies. Some recent animal studies showed that supplemental carnitine significantly increased weight loss and reduced fat gain.
Here's what you should keep in mind about carnitine.
• Carnitine works best with a lower-carb diet (insulin blunts its action). |

As far as yogurt's ability to boost immune function, researchers in New Zealand recruited thirty healthy elderly volunteers ranging in age from 63 to 84 years for a three-stage dietary supplementation trial lasting nine weeks. For the first three weeks, study participants were given a glass of low-fat milk twice a day to establish a base-control diet. For the next three weeks, they were given milk to which the Bifidobacterium lactis had been added in either a standard dose (5 X 1010 organisms per day) or a low dose (5 X 109 organisms per day). |

Having been interested in surgical nutrition, even as an intern, it amazed me to see these patients literally subsist on an intravenous infusion of water, salt, and glucose for weeks, with no other form of nutritional supplementation. These patients would come to us robust and healthy, and within three weeks to a month they would look like POWs in a communist gulag. It never dawned on anyone that the patients were literally starving, often to the point of death. |

X-rays: Diagnostic and Therapeutic
Most of us at some time or other have had x-rays taken. In the 1960s and 1970s it was considered wise to have a yearly chest x-ray to catch disease early, a preventive measure especially for cancer. |
