It focuses people on the debate over the safety of nutritional supplements, distracting them from the debate over the safety of prescription drugs and over-the-counter drugs.
3. It makes nutritional supplements more expensive, putting their purchase out of reach of more consumers.
4. With the loss of vitamin sales, many natural health retailers will be forced out of business, and this is good for organized medicine. The fewer health shops exist, the less competition there is for prescription drugs.
5. It establishes a legal precedent of control over not just supplements, but food. |

In what can only be called a fraudulently designed study, the Glucosamine-chondroitin Arthritis Intervention Trial (GAIT) compared these nutritional supplements with Celebrex, a prescription drug that only treats joint pain symptomatically and does nothing to rebuild cartilage or other tissue.
In other words, the study compared what is essentially a short-term painkiller with nutritional supplements that obviously take time to support the rebuilding of tissue. |

I'm actually fascinated by this market, because it is the single most corrupt and deceptive market I have seen in the natural health industry, and I believe it is my role to help set things right in this industry in order to limit the damage to the credibility of nutritional supplements as a whole.
Things are so terrible out there with hoodia and all the counterfeit products on the market that it is discrediting the entire nutritional supplements industry, which is very frustrating for me to see. That's one of the main reasons I am pursuing the truth on this subject. |

Recreational Drugs
Before conception and during pregnancy, especially the first trimester, it is important to avoid using recreational drugs, even those that may seem harmless at other times, as consequences to a developing fetus may be serious. Genetic material can be damaged by marijuana, for example; in animals, it has been linked to an increase in fetal deaths and malformations. |

Take nutritional supplements for bone health. balanced diet, adequate calcium and vitamin D, regular exercise, not smoking, low alcohol intake, and fall prevention are important steps for bone health as well as other health benefits.
Natural interventions for mildly low bone density and osteoporosis include dietary and lifestyle factors, exercise, nutritional supplementation, the use of phytoestrogens, and natural (bio-identical) hormone replacement therapy. Each of these areas deserves special attention. |

So, my position has never been that all nutritional supplements are good and that all pharmaceuticals are bad. It's just that if you're looking for what's truly healthy you're only going to find them from the natural world and never from the world of manufactured, synthesized drugs.
The category of nutritional supplements is definitely where you're going to find those supplemental products that enhance health rather than harming your health in the way that patent medications do. |

You will find the herbs we have discussed in most of them in one combination or another, and perhaps in combination with nutritional supplements, soy, or additional herbs that contain phytoestrogens or have some other therapeutic benefit specific to menopause. Most of these combination products have not been researched, even though individual ingredients have been. I am aware of only one herbal combination product that has been researched in a double-blind, placebo-conrrolled rrial. |
Basic lifestyle issues such as exercise, diet, nutritional supplements, and stress and mood assessment have all been studied and are always the starting point of treatment. Probably in part because we had no consistently effective therapy, conventional physicians have borrowed eagerly from natural medicine, and enthusiastic interest in natural progesterone occurred in the early 1980s.

If you have the knowledge of what works, you can walk into any store and buy potent herbs, homeopathic remedies or nutritional supplements that can help reverse these diseases.
That's a great freedom to have in this country. By the way, that freedom may be increasingly under attack because of the FDA's desire to regulate nutritional supplements. If you want to keep your health freedoms intact, stay alert. Pay attention to what's going on and act to preserve those freedoms. You can do that by joining the Alliance For Natural Health. |

I'll never forget Frances, who came into my office asking for an "orthodox, well-trained cardiologist" who would team up with her to complement her own self-care, which included the use of nutritional supplements with mind-body healing modalities. Let me tell you about this amazing woman who wanted to participate in her own healing, because she represents thousands of people, maybe even you, who are looking for the same thing.
Fran believed intuitively that she had the power to help heal her own heart. |

For example, I encouraged her to try nutritional supplements like coenzyme Qio, magnesium, L-carnitine, and multiple antioxidants and minerals to complement her current medications in strengthening the heart's pumping action. But I also had to caution Fran. Some of the supplements that she wanted to try could have serious interactions with the medications she was taking.
I'd like to pause a moment to caution you, the reader, about the dangers of taking supplements. |

Subsequently, several other terms (medical food, functional food, and nutritional supplements) were used. A nutraceutical is any nontoxic food extract supplement that has scientifically proven health benefits for both the treatment and prevention of disease (Dillard and German, 2000). Nutraceuticals may range from isolated nutrients, dietary supplements, and diets to genetically engineered "designer" food, herbal products, and processed products, such as cereals, soups, and beverages. |

Q10 and other nutritional supplements. He had asked the doctors at the community hospital if he could place his mother on coenzyme Q10, but they'd refused. He had brought in reams of research literature for them to read and review, but the doctors still wouldn't hear of it. Bob became so upset that he finally went directly to the hospital administration, but instead of interceding on his behalf, they asked him to leave the hospital. Lawyers became involved. It was a disaster. |
Another dilemma is the not-all-are-created-equal issue regarding nutritional supplements. While many products are pure, many others fail to live up to the ingredients and dosages listed on their labels. The FDA watchdogs our pharmaceuticals, but not the supplement industry. While FDA involvement would spuriously skyrocket the cost of many vitamins and supplements and place them outside the affordability range for many people, it is not easy to know which products are worthy of your financial investments at present. This darkens the cloak of suspicion for many physicians. |

We most often think of using nutritional supplements orally, but in this case I recommend the use of vitamin E intravaginally and topically. This use of vitamin E dates back at least to 1954.45 As demonstrated then as well as in my practice, vitamin E provides a very soothing effect. The tissue becomes less irritated with a decrease in redness, swelling, and congestion. Vitamin E usually relieves burning and itching within one to three days. It can be administered as either a suppository or from a gelatin capsule that is inserted into the vagina once or twice daily for seven or more days. |

Mike: John, this is a fascinating story and a little bit horrifying, because it is still true today that the truth about nutritional supplements is censored and that nutritional supplements are being confiscated. Doctors, especially psychiatric doctors for some reason, believe that only synthetic chemicals can help patients, and that nutrients play no role whatsoever in human health.
John: Exactly, and it is shocking. It is horrific that this is so horribly suppressed. It is even more suppressed now than it was 20 years ago, and it is a terrible thing. |

Round up 100 people who are taking multiple pharmaceuticals, and compare their health to 100 people who are taking vitamins and nutritional supplements. Guess who's healthier? The supplement crowd will be healthier every time. It's the obvious question: If vitamins are so dangerous, where are all the dead vitamin takers? And if pharmaceuticals are so safe, where are all the super-healthy prescription drug patients? They are nowhere to be found.
The healthiest people, by far, are those who take supplements, who engage in regular exercise, and who avoid taking prescription drugs. |

If you exercise and take nutritional supplements to boost the antioxidant level in your tissues, that you will be far healthier than doing either one alone, and of course you will be enormously healthier than the average person.
So it is this combination that matters -- physical exercise and outstanding nutrition. If you do one without the other, you don't get the same beneficial effect. It's even true if you just take nutritional supplements and neglect exercise, because exercise is what moves blood around your body. |

But paradoxically, the patient will also tell me that he or she is taking a series of nutritional supplements or other products from the health-food store, without ever questioning the effects they may be causing. No matter where they were purchased, these products can have significant side effects of their own, either directly or by influencing how well actual drugs work. Just because they're "natural" does not mean using them carries no risk.

If the truth were told about the safety and efficacy of nutritional supplements, people would find natural, nutritional alternatives to drugs and surgery, and drug companies would go bust virtually over night.
So the censorship stays in place and the consumers remain ignorant of the healing power of nutrition. U.S. regulators actually require that health consumers be kept ignorant of nutritional truths. But that's only fitting, since most of the doctors in this country are similarly illiterate when it comes to nutrition.

Yet, in general, nutritional supplements are highly "bioavailable," meaning that they can be readily used by the body. Nonetheless, nutrient-food interactions are complex.11 For example, the simultaneous ingestion of fats increases the availability of lycopene and carotenoids supplements. Some vitamins are actually more effective in supplements than in foodstuffs (e.g., vitamin A is more bioavailable in supplement than in spinach or sweet potato). On the other hand, lycopene is more available from eggs than from supplements, and cooking tomatoes increases its availability. |

Many of these "wanna B's" can be found in nutritional supplements.
CHOLINE
Choline is an essential nutrient that may not, strictly speaking, be a vitamin. Choline is synthesized in the body, but enough is not always made to meet needs. In order to make choline, the body needs sufficient methionine, vitamin B12, and folic acid. Consequently, choline is sometimes needed in the diet. Lecithin (phosphatidylcholine) contains about 13 percent choline by weight.
Most of the choline in the body is found in phospholipids. All human cell membranes need phospholipids for structural integrity. |
Molybdenum found in nutritional supplements is often in the form of sodium molybdate or ammonium molybdate.
TOXICITY OF MOLYBDENUM
Molybdenum has a low toxicity. Exposure to very high intakes of 10 mg to 15 mg has resulted in increased levels of uric acid in the blood and gout-like symptoms. The tolerable upper intake level has been set at a conservative 2 mg for adults.
To summarize, molybdenum is needed in trace amounts by enzymes that metabolize the sulfur-containing amino acids. It also assists in the removal of toxins from the blood. |

A word of caution however—Bentonite clay should not be taken if you are pregnant, of advanced age, or for at least two hours after taking other medications or nutritional supplements. No known side effects are associated with ingesting pure organic sources of this healing clay in the recommended amounts. However, Bentonite clay has not been subject to a longitudinal study focusing on its physiological effects in humans. It's always best to consult a qualified healthcare practitioner before taking any new supplement. |
