OSL) of coenzyme Qio for chronic administration as a dietary supplement is 1,200 mg a day. In a recent trial on the safety of coenzyme Qio in its reduced form as ubiquinol in human subjects, doses up to 300 mg daily for two months was found to be safe. Higher doses were not tested in this study. In the Parkinson's study, the ubiquinone form of coenzyme Qi0 was used.
Safety data on high-dose coenzyme Qiq ingestion are also available based upon animal studies. |

I will discuss phytochemical supplements later in this section. As you can imagine, with the research and publicity showing these phytochemicals to be so protective against diseases like cancer, food producers are rushing to add them to their products. Most of these food products, however, remain "junk foods" despite the added dose of phytochemicals:
Nutraceuticals can also concentrate the best of food chemicals for daily consumption. |

Despite the lack of scientific proof, some readers do report success with this dietary supplement. We heard from one postmenopausal woman who reported that MSM not only eased her arthritis pain but also had some unexpected benefits.
/ went to my local natural pharmacy and said I was taking glucosamine and chondroitin because when I hit menopause I developed arthritis pain in my hands. The folks there suggested I take MSM as well. They said to increase the dose gradually because it gives you diarrhea if you bump it suddenly. I'm taking a great deal of it and I have no unpleasant side effects. |
The trouble with this dietary supplement is that it contains way too much vitamin A, which may be bad for bones. Scientists have reported that high intake of vitamin A from cod liver oil in Sweden and Norway is associated with weaker bones, osteoporosis, and an increased risk of hip fracture.1
To get around this problem, pharmaceutical-grade fish oil might be very helpful. Barry Sears, PhD (of Zone Diet fame), recommends between 3 and 8 grams total of EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) and DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) daily to calm inflammation.120 According to Dr. |

CoQ10 is critical for the energy factories of each cell—the mitochondria—to work efficiently. You want your mitochondria to be working optimally to supply your cells with energy. If CoQ10 is low, however, your cells have a harder time performing at their peak. Muscles in general, and the heart muscle in particular, may suffer if your CoQ10 level drops. |
Make sure your physician and pharmacist double-check to verify that any other medicine, herb, or dietary supplement you take is safe with your antidepressant.
Cost: Approximately $130 to $140 for a month's supply of Prozac. Generic fluoxetine costs $16 to $20 for the same amount.
There is one other complication associated with these antidepressants that is rarely discussed. Sudden discontinuation of drugs like Effexor, Paxil, Serzone, and Zoloft may cause unexpected symptoms. |

Since vanadium can be a relatively toxic mineral its use as a dietary supplement should be limited to dosages reflective of dietary intake (e.g., 500-1,000 meg daily). The major concern is that excessive levels of vanadium have been suggested to be a factor in manic depression, as increased levels of vanadium are found in hair samples from manic patients, and these values fall towards normal levels with recovery. Vanadium, as the vanadate ion, is a strong inhibitor of the sodium-potassium pump. Lithium, the drug of choice for manic depression, has been reported to reduce this inhibition, too. |

All in all, we cannot think of a more impressive dietary supplement than fish oil. In our enthusiasm for fish oil, however, do not think for a moment that we are abandoning fish. This should also be an important part of a heart-healthy diet. At least three servings of fish a week are recommended.

Acupuncture
Let's face it, acupuncture is still mysterious to most Western physicians. American medical education has a very hard time grappling with things outside the dominant paradigm. Talk about chi or energy flow and most traditionally trained physicians will look at you as if you are from a distant planet. And yet Chinese healers have been practicing acupuncture for thousands of years. How effective is it for relieving symptoms of arthritis? |

Instead, it is sold as a "dietary supplement." There are several different brands of stevia (Stevita, Stevia Plus, SweetLeaf), each with a slightly different taste.
Another new sweetener looks promising: tagatose (Naturlose). It is a low-calorie, natural sugar found in milk that has just attained GRAS (Generally Recognized as Safe) status, allowing it to be included in foods as a sweetener. Tagatose is a sugar molecule, similar to glucose, that is poorly absorbed. It also appears to be able to actually block the absorption of other sugars, including glucose. |

Therefore, some manufacturers began marketing herbal medicines as "nutritional supplements"—a legislative loophole that allowed products with no proven efficacy to be sold as long as the manufacturers made no claims on the product label.
The dietary supplement Health and Education Act of 1994 (DSHEA) also classified herbs as nutritional supplements. Again, the labeling of dietary supplements could carry no claims of therapeutic benefit. Therefore, manufacturers had to market herbs as benefiting a natural body function and not as a treatment for a disease process. |

Earning a seal of approval from USP through their dietary supplement Verification Program isn't easy. Researchers test the supplements in a laboratory and even inspect the manufacturing plants that package them. To get this mark, a supplement must:
• label all of its ingredients.
• actually contain the type and amount of ingredients listed on its label.
• be free of toxins like heavy metals, pesticides, bacteria, or other pollutants. have a consistent quality and amount of ingredients in different bottles of the same supplement.
• dissolve completely inside your body. |

You get into the whole cross spectrum of things that can kill you; you are more at risk of being hit by lightning, being hit by a car crossing the street or dying from an allergic reaction to a bee sting than you are from being hurt by a dietary supplement.
Mike: What is also astonishing, John, in this is that it seems like the FDA and the government regulatory bodies all assume that all drugs are safe unless proven dangerous, but that all herbs are dangerous until proven safe. That it is the herbs and supplements that are the danger to Americans, not the drugs. |
