Seizures occur in 15% of people sensitive to aspartame, most of whom suffered their first convulsions after consuming a diet product. What About "One-Per-Day" Multiples?
One-per-day multiples are primarily B-complex (p. 341) vitamins, with vitamin A (p. 336) and vitamin D (p. 343) sometimes being high and other times being low potency. The rest of the formula tends to be low potency. It does not take much of some of the minerals—for example, copper (p. 285), zinc (p. 346), and iron (p. 304)—to offer 100% or more of what people normally require, so these minerals may appear at reasonable levels in a one-per-day MVM. |
The essential amino acid requirements of burn patients may exceed the amount of lysine in the diet.
How Much Is Usually Taken?
Most people do not require lysine supplementation. Nutritionally oriented doctors often suggest that people with recurrent herpes simplex infections take 1,000-3,000 mg of lysine per day. Are There Any Side Effects or Interactions? In animals, high doses of lysine have been linked to increased risk of gallstones (p. 69)5 and elevated cholesterol (p. 79). |

When buying cornmeal, look for stone-ground meal. However, because of its high oil content, cornmeal has a relatively brief shelf life. Store it in the refrigerator in airtight containers for up to three months, or twice that long in the freezer. There is a downside to this. While cool temperatures prevent the meal from turning rancid and inhibit insect infestation, vitamins are lost.

Glutamic acid hydrochloride is used sometimes in formulas, but this amino acid is only mildly acidic and does not work as well as betaine hydrochloride. Betaine may be used alone, in supplements, or along with pepsin or other digestive agents.
