Soy is one of the few plant foods that is a complete protein containing the proper balance of the eight essential amino acids. The U.S. government recognizes it as a protein alternative equivalent to meat, and, according to the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, "except for premature infants, soy protein can serve as a sole protein source in the human body." As with other vegetable proteins, eating it with a grain such as rice or pasta enhances its nutritional value.
SOY ADVANTAGES OVER ANIMAL PROTEIN

ELECTROSTIMULATION. amino acids and neurotransmitter precursors are more effective when accompanied by electrostimulation of the brain. A
TENS unit, worn on the forehead and left wrist, helps drive these substances along a good pathway. A cranioelectrical stimulation (CES) device also helps electrical fields, and additionally enhances the entire neurotransmitter system.
EXERCISE. Research shows that the whole neurotransmitter system of the brain can be improved through exercise. (See "Exercise and Other Physical Techniques," above.)

The dopamine system responds to the essential amino acids tyrosine and phenylalanine. Melatonin helps sleep and slows down aging by supporting the pineal gland. Choline builds memory, while gabba, available as gabbapentin, helps anxiety disorders. Choline, phosphatytyl serine, ginkgo, tryptophan, tyrosine, and phenylalanine all boost brain voltage.
CHELATION THERAPY. As described earlier (see "Other Detoxification Techniques," above), chelation therapy pulls out aluminum and other heavy metals from the bloodstream, resulting in improved memory. |
Hunnisett, "Abnormalities in Essential amino acids in Patients with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome," Journal of Nutritional Medicine 2 (1991): 369-75.
The authors note deficiencies of magnesium, vitamin B1, and essential fatty acids in chronic fatigue patients, and correction of these deficiencies has resulted in clinical improvement. Changes in relaxation and resting indices with myothermography have been documented in patients with magnesium deficiency, and the authors have found a good correlation between myotherapy and magnesium status in chronic fatigue patients.

Nutritional supplementation can also promote elevated growth hormone levels. amino acids such as arginine, lysine, ornithine, glutamine, glycine, tryptophan and tyrosine have been shown to improve growth hormone levels. Niacin has also been effective. These nutritional items also work better to raise growth hormone levels when used in combination rather than individually.
An interesting nutritional product, Gammanol Forte (manufactured by Biotics Research) can raise growth hormone levels by more than 50% in some people. Gammanol Forte contains gamma oryzanol, which is found in rice bran. |
These amino acids are best used in combination due to their synergistic effect in raising growth hormone levels. Niacin, in doses less than one gram per day, has also been shown to elevate growth hormone levels.
Final Thoughts
There is some concern that supplementation with human growth hormone may be stimulating to some cancer cells. There are some studies which show human growth hormone may be stimulating to leukemia and lymphoma cells in cultures. Other studies showed huge doses of human growth hormone in rats promoted tumor growth. |
Hydrocortisone provides the body with glucose and amino acids necessary for the body's metabolism, especially in stressful states.
Sex hormones are also produced in the adrenal cortex (as well as in the ovaries and the testicles). These hormones include the androgen (i.e., tissue and muscle building) hormones pregnenolone, DHEA, and testosterone. DHEA and testosterone are responsible for building muscles and healing injured areas of the body.
Progesterone and estrogens are also produced in the adrenal glands in men and women. |

Precursors are medically formulated compounds of concentrated amino acids, vitamins, and mineral cofactors. Having adequate amounts of dopamine and serotonin will enable you to have a normal appetite response.
A specialist (physician or naturopath) who has interest and training in neuroendocrinology, or natural brain hormone chemistry, would be most helpful in prescribing the right amounts of dopamine and serotonin supplements for you. The commonly prescribed appetite suppressant medications used today work through these dopamine and serotonin pathways. |

Protein-deficient individuals cannot satisfy the body's daily needs for maintaining structure and repairing injuries. In addition, these individuals may also have hormonal deficiencies, particularly thyroid problems. I have diagnosed many patients with hypothyroidism that has been caused by an inadequate protein intake. Thyroid hormone is unable to convert from the inactive (i.e., T4) form to the active (i.e. |

In other words, there is no breaking of larger particles into smaller particles such as happens with fat being broken apart into fatty acids as noted above, or with carbohydrate digestion, or when protein is "digested" to its component amino acids. The amount of cholesterol that is absorbed by the intestinal cells varies, but generally it amounts to much less than half (50 percent) of the amount consumed (except in the special case of infants where most of what is consumed is absorbed ?see below for details). |

The very act of cutting or slicing stimulates enzymatic action on the organosulfur amino acids. This action yields a number of volatile compounds. Anyone who has ever chopped an onion knows one side of this volatility: the irritation to skin, eyes, and tongue, a milder version of the grave toxic irritation sulfuric acid can cause. Cooking weakens this reaction, making both the smell and taste of the allium considerably milder, while still, of course, adding taste to whatever is cooking. |
Nutritionally speaking, that is because the protein in legumes is incomplete; it lacks one or more amino acids. By combining the legume with grains or with a small amount of an animal product like poultry, fish, meat, or a dairy product, one makes the protein complete.
In diets dominated by vegetables, or in parts of the world where eating animals is either prohibited by custom or prohibitively costly, the typical combination is legume and grain. |
In addition to containing genistein, soy is a complete protein; it contains all the essential amino acids, but unlike animal protein, soy has cholesterol-lowermg effects.
Phytochemicals can do more than defend against cancer; they can also counterattack. Indol?-carbinol, found in cabbage, cauliflower, and other cruciferous vegetables, triggers enzymes that keep the form of estrogen linked to breast cancer from predominating. Allylic sulfide, a phytochemical found in onions and garlic, enhances enzymes that detoxify carcinogens. |

Excitatory amino acids are naturally released during the digestion of whole-food proteins, but the release happens slowly and consequendy the brain is not flooded with them. However, when they are consumed in isolated or concentrated forms, as in Nutrasweet or MSG, the brain receives a mega-dose of them all at once and problems may ensue."

Perhaps the most important role for cysteine and methionine in detoxification lies in their conversion to glutathione, which is a complex of three amino acids (a tripeptide). Glutathione is both an essential detoxifier and an important antioxidant. Fasting depletes the body of glutathione, but a brief period of fasting followed by feasting actually elevates glutathione to a level higher than before the fast. Glutathione may also be directly absorbed into the body from foods, especially fresh meats and nuts and vegetables like asparagus and avocado. |

Eight amino acids cannot be made by the body and must be obtained through the diet; others are produced in the body but not always in sufficient amounts. The body's main "amino acid pool" consists of: alanine, arginine, aspargine, aspartic acid, carnitine, citrulline, cysteine, cystine, GABA, glutamic acid, glutamine, glycine, histidine, isoleucine, leucine, lysine, methionine, ornithine, phenylalanine, proline, serine, taurine, threonine, tryptophan, tyrosine, and valine. |

Plant extracts rich in the antioxidants called proanthocyanidins32 may constitute a kind of intermediate between herbal remedy and nutrient. |
Normally, proteins are broken down into their constituent amino acids before they are absorbed. Those components are reassembled to create the structural proteins we need for maintenance and repair in the body.
Intact proteins should be allowed in only when they are "invited," absorbed actively for a purpose.16 Other proteins that slip through holes in the lining of a leaky gut are targeted as "foreign" and the immune system makes antibodies against them. When that happens with a food protein, it's as if you've been vaccinated against that food. |

In addition, this food product has been reported to enable both Type I and Type II diabetics to decrease their insulin dosage. |
Excessive consumption of protein powders containing isolated amino acids can also trigger an asthma attack by creating an acid stress on the body. This means that excess acid reserves are created, which the kidneys must continuously dump into the urine to keep the blood pH stable and slightly alkaline (7.34-7.45). I have known bodybuilding athletes who started wheezing as a result of drinking these isolated amino acid (protein) drinks. I have also

The most important amino acids for Phase Two detoxification pathways are cysteine and methionine, because they are also the main dietary sources of sulfur. Cysteine and methionine are widely distributed in meat, fish, poultry, eggs, and dairy products. Vegetarians can obtain adequate supplies from nuts, seeds, and beans. The adult RDA for cysteine/methionine is 700 to 1,000 milligrams per day. The amount a person needs is never fixed, however; it fluctuates with the liver's burden of toxic compounds. |

For example, some of the amino acids are better utilized for specific purposes when taken separately from foods. (See Chapter 8.) My recommendation is not to worry too much about such combinations; they are minor, and worrying about them makes supplement programs confusing and inconvenient. If you do not remember to take things, they are not going to do you any good.
You may have concerns about swallowing so many pills if you are on many different supplements. If you have difficulty, it is easiest to take them with a thicker liquid, such as tomato juice or a blended fruit and yogurt smoothee. |

The morphine-like peptides from gluten frequently stay intact because the bonds between some sequences of amino acids are quite resistant to digestion. Those who have a leaky gut will allow these opioids and other large peptides to enter the bloodstream. The addictive process has probably been at work in most gluten-sensitive and celiac individuals for many years, probably since childhood. This makes elimination of gluten a great deal more challenging than might be expected. It certainly requires more than a halfhearted suggestion from a family doctor or gastroenterologist. |
Eight amino acids are equally essential to human health and must come from our food supply. Some essential vitamins are abundantly available in animal products, such as vitamin B12, yet they are not found in other food sources, including gluten cereals. We humans are members of a very select animal group. Guinea pigs and humans are the only mammals that cannot synthesize their own vitamin C. Hence we are also the only animals at risk of developing scurvy. Cereal grains contain very little of this health-promoting vitamin. |
There are eight distinct sequences of amino acids in a milk protein called casein that have also been discovered to have opioid function.
They are called "casomorphins," and are not as potent as those derived from gluten.
Recall that hunter-gatherers were apparently immune to cancer. For at least five hundred thousand years, these ancestors of ours, with rare exceptions, did not eat a diet that contained gluten.
