Other new products popping up on the shelves include proteins, amino acids, enzymes, natural hormones (like DHEA and melatonin), and other substances that are produced by the body but that decline as we age and need to be replenished. Still other new supplements are herbs that have been widely used in other countries, but not—until now—in the United States.
The Supplement Bible is the first book to introduce readers to the supplement explosion brought about by the recent change in the law. |
MSM is critical for the production of amino acids, the building blocks that make protein. Without MSM and other sulfur compounds, protein cannot hold its molecular structure. It is difficult to get enough MSM through food, however, since it is often destroyed during processing. On the basis of numerous studies on the role of MSM in the body, I believe that even a mild MSM deficiency can contribute to many medical problems, either directly or indirectly.
Several studies have documented the potential of MSM as a treatment for a wide variety of ailments. |

Based on the most current research available in this field, to maintain good health our bodies require the regular daily intake of at least 103 different nutrients: 72 minerals, 16 vitamins, 12 amino acids, and 3 essential fatty acids. Unfortunately it has become almost impossible to take in all of these just from the foods we eat.
These minerals and trace elements play various essential roles, depending upon their categorization:
• Some are involved in exchanges on the membranous level, the transmission of nerve impulses, and the supply of building elements to the bones. |

This causes the body to release insulin, which in turn causes almost all the amino acids except tryptophar to be absorbed quickly by cells. Tryptophan gets "left behind," bscause it's a larger molecule than the others. When tryptophan gets left behind, and is the only amino acid remaining in the bloodstream in high concentrations, it soon gets a "free ride" to the brain. Therefore, to assimilate tryptophan, you should eat the obposite way from the way you eat to assimilate tyrosine. You should eat high-carbohydrate, low-protein foods, and make sure you e it the carbohydrates before the protein. |

Inside the gut, the mass is supposed to be broken down into vitamins, minerals, trace elements, fatty acids, amino acids, and enzymes. You can't make an egg without cracking that shell; the body has to split open the food molecules, break them down, so it can get the gems. The rest is eliminated through the peristaltic action of the bowel. When that does not occur, the GI tract is full of undigested matter. This undigested food mass begins to decay in the thirty feet of GI tract. |

To potentiate the action of these amino acids, folic acid, magnesium, and vitamins C and B12 can be taken.
Both phenylalanine and tyrosine can be purchased at health food stores cr—more economically—from manufacturers through the mail. (See the "Resources and Referrals" appendix.)
A typical daily dosage of each amino acid—for persons with no frank cognitive pathology—would be in the 500-to-l ,000-mg range. For my patients who show signs of moderate clinical depression, I may recommend dosages of up to 1,500 mg daily of each amino acid. |

Characterized as a "green food," a group of food products derived from other microalgae, chlorella is packed with important phytochemicals that have unique disease-fighting properties, as well as amino acids, vitamins, and minerals. Widely used in Japan, chlorella is touted as the supplement that can help remove or "detoxify" harmful chemicals, heavy metals, and pollutants from the body. Natural healers recommend chlorella for nonspecific complaints such as fatigue and for anyone who generally wants to feel stronger or healthier. |

It is essential, then, that we make the effort to maintain effective cellular respiration by taking in sufficient enzymes, amino acids, vitamins, and minerals. Because everything on our planet is interconnected, we are not alone in our dependence on cellular respiration. Also dependant on this process are the animals that supply us with food, the fish in our rivers and oceans, and the world's plants and trees. Damage to cellular respiration spells the eventual death of our forests, fish, and animals and the emergence of what we call "incurable" animal and human illnesses. |

Royal jelly is a complete protein, containing all essential amino acids and B vitamins. Studies have shown that royal jelly is a mild antibiotic and has a stimulating effect on the adrenal glands, which produce key hormones in the body that regulate metabolism, mood, appetite, and even sex drive. Herbalists often recommend royal jelly for menopause problems in women, to improve sexual performance in men, and as an energizing tonic for both sexes. Anecdotal evidence suggests that royal jelly may help reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. |

Proteins are made of building blocks called amino acids. One amino acid called homocysteine tends to build up in the blood of some people and when it does it encourages artery blockages, apparently by increasing the likelihood of blood clots or damaging the artery lining.13 A study of American physicians found that those in the top 5 percent of homocysteine levels had triple the risk of a heart attack compared to those with lower levels. |

There also are many products on the market that contain other substances like high-potency free amino acids, botanicals, enzymes, herbs, animal extracts, and bioflavanoids.
The FDA's review of the safety and efficacy of these products is significantly less than for drugs and other products it regulates. Be cautious about using any supplement that claims to treat, prevent or cure a serious disease. |

The more protein you consume, the more amino acids pour into your bloodstream and the more calcium you lose.
Meat, eggs, and other animal products have far more protein than the body needs. Back in the 1950s and 1960s, this was thought to be an advantage. We now know that these protein-dense products do much more harm than good. The more protein in your diet, the more acidic molecules your body has to cope with.2
A meat-based diet is disastrous for bones. Switching from beef to chicken or fish does not help because these products have as much animal protein as beef or even a bit more. |
Meats are loaded with what are called sulfur-containing amino acids, which are especially aggressive at causing calcium to be lost in the urine.
So instead of meat sauce on spaghetti, if you were to top your pasta with chunks of vegetables in a tomato sauce, the antioxidants in those veggies are only part of the edge they bring you. Grains, beans, vegetables, and fruits easily provide enough protein for your body's needs but avoid the excess. They are powerful calcium savers that help keep bones strong and calcium dense. |

It is also known for its role in determining the integrity of genetic paternity (what is known in molecular biology as "zinc fingers," a sequence of twenty amino acids arranged in a way that resembles the fingers of a glove. These are connected to a zinc atom that gives protein the ability to interact with DNA).
The human body contains about 2 grams of zinc. The recommended daily allowance (from food and other sources) about 5 to 10 mg for children, 30 to 50 mg for pregnant women and nursing mothers, and 25 to 30 mg for the average adult. |

The body uses B vitamins to regulate many amino acids, including tryptophan. Niacin is particularly important because it appears to make tryptophan work even more efficiently. Lean meat is an excellent source of all the B vitamins, including niacin. Canned tuna is another good source, with 3 ounces providing 11 milligrams of niacin, 55 percent of the DV.

This has been true since the time eons past when the minerals of the ancient oceans combined with amino acids and enzymes to first create life forms. In fact, mineral salts are the very foundation of all life. Simultaneously present in the mineral, plant, and animal realms, mineral salts are responsible for the transfer of the energy running through all their substances and organisms.
It has long been thought that the variety and abundance of the modern diet was enough to prevent any risk of nutrient deficiency. We now know, however, that there is no factual basis for this assumption. |

A chelated mineral, as mentioned, is one that is bound to amino acids. As the amino acid is easily absorbed, the heavier mineral "hitchhikes" a ride through the intestinal wall into the bloodstream.
Dr. Lee built on much of Dr. Miller's work on minerals. In his studies on calcium, Dr. Miller found that the vitamin that controlled calcium absorption into the blood had a natural antagonist, unofficially called vitamin F. What vitamin do we get from the sun? Vitamin D. It is important to understand the relationship between vitamins and minerals because they are entirely different substances. |

Stress speeds up the metabolic rate, which increases the demand not just for food "fuel," but also for the partial proteins, called amino acids, that are used in a host of neurological activities.
Stress, via Cortisol, also increases the physical craving for carbohydrates. Cortisol production triggers the release of a brain chemical called neuropeptide Y, which causes the desire for carbohydrate consumption. This biochemical mechanism is the reason that many people overeat sweets and starchy foods when they are under stress. |

According to testimony before the Senate Nutrition Committee, many plant foods we eat today are deficient in trace elements needed to produce proteins and amino acids in our own bodies. As an example, the soil in thirty-two states lacks zinc, one of the vital trace elements.
The best fertilizers are those that give a full range of minerals in the same basic proportions as Nature. These can be obtained from sea minerals, ancient seabed or clay mineral deposits, and "rock dust" made from local mixed gravel or granite that is ground to a powder. |

Neuropeptides, or "brain hormones," are short chains of amino acids that regulate the key human activities and sensations: sleep, hunger, sex, stress, emotions, and pain; prominent examples include norepinephrine, glutamate, Cortisol, serotonin, ACTH, and dopamine. Pert and Ruff found that certain white blood cells had receptor sites ("molecular antennae") tuned specifically to receive biochemical messages from the brain, conveyed by these neurotransmitters. |

In your body, these naturally occuring substances break down into the same amino acids found in any protein food.
The primary problem with aspartame is overconsumption. Large doses of phenylalanine are toxic to the brain and can cause mental retardation and seizures in people with a particular genetic disorder called phenylketonuria. Other people experience headaches, depression, mood swings, high blood pressure, insomnia, and behavior problems as a result of chemical changes in the brain caused by the sweetener. |

Demands for vitamins, minerals, fatty acids, amino acids, and carbohydrates must be met. To function at peak efficiency, every hormone, enzyme, antibody, and neurotransmitter requires a good diet. The harmony of all these components will be disrupted not only by nutrient deficiencies, but by an overconsump-tion of sugar, fat, caffeine, fried and rancid foods, refined flour, and chemical food additives. Along with essential fatty aids and amino acids, vitamins and minerals are among the almost 50 known essential nutrients we need for a healthy life, says Dr. Janson.
Four of those vitamins—A, D, E and K—are fat-soluble, meaning that excess amounts may be stored in the body. The others—C and the eight B vitamins—are water-soluble, so excess amounts are simply urinated away. |
