It is one of the "essential amino acids," those that need to be supplied from the diet since it is not manufactured in the body in adequate amounts. L-tryptophan aids in the production of serotonin, which promotes sleep. The presence of L-tryptophan in milk and turkey explains why these foods have been associated with helping people sleep or relax. L-tryptophan was available as an over-the-counter supplement recommended by doctors and others for "insomnia, premenstrual tension, stress, and depression. |

Pharmacokinetics studies were performed in rats using S-labeled alliin, allicin, and vinyldithiin. Each compound was administered in a dose of 8 mg/kg, and the activity levels were determined in terms of 35S-alliin. Blood levels were measured over a 72-h period along with excretion levels in the urine, feces, and expired air. Whole-animal autoradi-ographs were also obtained to assess organ distribution. |

Foods rich in the amino acids tyrosine and tyra-mine, such as aged cheeses, wine, and chocolate, interfere with enzymes needed to metabolize sympathomimetic drugs such as beta-agonists. Side effects of mixing these foods with beta-agonists in sensitive people can include severe high blood pressure, intracranial bleeding, severe headache, chest pain, sweating, palpitations, changes in pulse rate, vision problems, and breathing difficulties. In rare cases, coma can result.

Helpful for tissue growth and repair
• Important for digestion and ulcer healing
• Controls gastric acidity
• Important for production of red and white blood cells
• Possible benefits in rheumatoid arthritis
Isoleucine: An essential amino acid and one of three branch-chain amino acids (BCAAs), which form an essential part of muscle tissue protein.
• Needed for hemoglobin production
• Stabilizes blood sugar and energy levels
Note: Use in combination with leucine and valine; deficiency of isoleucine can produce hypoglycemia-like symptoms. |
Even so, it is safer to use these directly in organic form, best obtained from fresh, organic vegetable and grass juice, mineral-rich food or plant concentrates, or, alternatively, safely bound to amino acids or as stable complexes such as copper and zinc salicylate.
However, there is a downside to routinely adding inorganic minerals, such as table salt, to our food. We may use concentrations that are too high and irritate the intestinal wall, and we may also cause mineral imbalances. |
Also supply yourself with plenty of sulfur in the form of MSM (see part 3) or, alternatively, use onions, raw egg yolk, and possibly the amino acids cysteine and methionine, or even powdered sulfur. Regular cleansing is the more important the older and physically less active you are.
Mucus problems are very common. This is obvious when we have a cold with a congested or runny nose, but at other times it may be noticed as congested or inflamed sinuses, ear or hearing problems, including tinnitus and "glue ear" in children, glaucoma, and throat and lung problems, especially asthma. |
In addition to a supplement program high in vitamin C before and after amalgam removal, the amino acids L-cysteine and L-methionine as well as MSM are helpful in removing mercury from tissues. Preferably, also use homeopathic mercury 1M and higher potencies.
Injections of the mercury chelator DMPS can be administered by qualified health professionals. However, this procedure has occasionally lead to complications and the oral DMSA is less expensive and apparently safer. |
Promotes emulsifying and absorbing fats
• Helps regulate rhythm and mineral concentrations in the heart
• An inhibitory (sedating) neurotransmitter, helps with epilepsy
Threonine: This is one of the essential amino acids.
• Maintains protein balance
• Needed for the formation of collagen and elastine
• Aids the liver and fat metabolism
• Helps control epilepsy
Tryptophan: This is another essential amino acid. |

The Juice Cleanse or the Detox Diet, often accompanied with light protein and amino acids, can be useful in the transition and detox process. Post-detox, whole foods with complex carbohydrates and adequate proteins can be nourishing.
4. Follow basic hypoglycemic guidelines—avoid sugars and sweetened foods, have some nourishment regularly (every 2 to 3 hours), and maintain adequate protein intake.
5. Drink 6 to 8 glasses or more of water daily to help clear the liver and cleanse the body of toxins.
6. Include sufficient fiber to support proper bowel elimination.

The so-called Proxmire Amendment to the FDC Act is another factor influencing the atmosphere in which the agency made its decisions regarding the regulation of amino acids," he said. "The amendment was passed in direct response to an FDA rulemaking effort and it seemed to signal Congressional intent that supplement-type products not be regulated without indication of real danger to health."
Archer promoted the agency's get-tough-on-non-drugs policy. |

Additional amino acids can help balance our energy level during use of or withdrawal from caffeine. Water intake and additional fiber will support bowel function, which frequently slows down during caffeine withdrawal.
Spreading the detoxification program over a week or two and reducing caffeine intake to none will help avoid significant headaches. Lower caffeine intake by drinking grain-coffee blends, diluted or smaller amounts of regular coffee, or decaffeinated coffee (water processed). |

However, there are eight amino acids that are essential. Essential means that they must be obtained in the diet because the body cannot make them from other nutrients and raw materials supplied in the diet. In many instances, nutrients can be made from simple building blocks directly within our cells, but the essential nutrients cannot be made in this way. They must be obtained in the diet.
The essential amino acids are valine, lysine, threonine, leucine, isoleucine, tryptophan, phenylalanine, and methionine. |

By dry weight, brewer's yeast contains 50-60 % nitrogen compounds (proteins, nucleic acids, free amino acids, and biogenic amines), 15-37 % carbohydrates, and 4-7 % fats and lipids, chiefly phospholipids.
The therapeutic use of brewer's yeast is based largely on folk medicine and empirical healing. Several pharmacologic studies showed an increased phagocytic index for peritoneal macrophages in mice (Schmidt, 1977) and a decreased severity of experimental infections in mice and rhesus monkeys (Sinai et al., 1974). |

Let's just say here that scientific thinking has shifted on just how much protein we need to eat at each meal to make "complete" proteins (proteins with all eight essential amino acids). The amino acids that we get from proteins and that are necessary for the body to build and repair tissue stay in our bodies for a minimum of four hours, and in some cases up to forty-eight hours. So there is simply no need to keep replenishing the supply at every meal. One complete protein source (e.g., soy, fish, dairy products, nuts) in a day is enough. |

The two amino acids in aspartame—aspartic acid and phenylalanine—while essential to normal brain functioning, are toxic in excessive amounts, and can also cause hyperactivity and aggressive behavior. In excess, these amino acids cause rapid, uncontrolled firing of brain cells that may lead to cell damage or death. Substances that produce these effects are called excito-toxins, and should be avoided by ADD children.

There are eight essential amino acids for adults that must be supplied with the diet: isoleucine, leucine, lysine, methionine, phenylalanine, threonine, tryptophan, and valine. Two others, arginine and histidine, are essential in the first year of life. Some may be useful as supplements to enhance the functions described below, but commonly this is necessary only in cases of malabsorption of nutrients, with specific diseases, or with bodybuilding and sports nutrition. The specific amounts to use are usually not critical and may vary widely with practitioners. |

Since plant and bacteria genes use different sequences to "describe" certain amino acids, the codes of bacterial genes have to be altered so they will "read" correctiy in the plant. Cummins says, "Use of synthetic genes has become pervasive in genetic engineering and the synthetic genes are assumed to be equivalent. But there are a lot of differences between them that have been ignored. In particular, the bacterial genes used in Bt crops and Roundup Ready soy and corn are changed a great deal. |

Along with all eight essential amino acids and lecithin, flax also contains up to 60 percent linolenic acid (LNA), which has been shown to inhibit the production of tumor-promoting acid in the body and helps maintain the integrity of cell walls. Fresh raw fruits and nuts contain all the vitamins, minerals, natural sugars, and amino acids required for human nutrition, and a diet consisting solely of fruit will quite rapidly disinfect the stomach and alimentary canal, with fresh fruits being far more effective for this purpose than stewed or canned fruits. Regular fruit consumption, like regular vegetable consumption, has been shown to offer significant protection against many chronic degenerative diseases, including cancer, heart disease, cataracts, and strokes. |

Most vegetables are relatively low in the amino acids methionine and lysine; however, beans and lentils are rich in methionine. Soybeans and quinoa are excellent sources of both lysine and methionine.
Early theories, such as those first expounded by Frances Moore Lappe in her groundbreaking vegetarian cookbook Diet for a Small Planet, suggested that vegetable proteins had to be carefully combined with complementary proteins in order to match the quality of animal proteins. However, we have since learned that careful combining of plant-based proteins is quite unnecessary. |

They are high molecular weight compounds made up principally of chains of amino acids linked together by peptide bonds. Their molecular weights range from 10,000 to 2,000,000 and control the amount of metabolites and the rate at which they move through metabolic pathways. As biological catalysts, they speed the rate of attainment of chemical equilibrium by lowering the energy barrier between substrate and products. In other words, a catalyst will increase the rate of a reaction, but will not affect the position of the reaction equilibrium. |
Just as amino acids are the building blocks of proteins, amino sugars are the building blocks of very large molecules called glycosaminoglycans (GAGs), also known as mucopolysaccharides. GAGs are large, spongy, water-holding molecules that form the gel-like matrix of ground substance, or the "glue" that holds our bodies together. This substance is found in all connective tissue and mucous membranes. Glucosamine macromolecules are the basic substrate of cartilage, ligaments, tendons, and bones. |
